The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-08-2010 i dunno. he's really good, spends a lot of time training, but he's always depended on his size to carry him through. he said he doesn't want to move up to middleweight, so that pretty much clinches this as fact in my mind. the welterweight division is getting bigger. i mean, the fighters themselves are getting bigger. gsp has cleaned out all of the names that have been around, but there's a whole new wave of giant (6'2, walk around at or near 200lbs) welterweights who are coming up. gonna be interesting to see how he can deal with that. UFC 112 is happening this Saturday. The main and co-main events are Anderson vs Maia and Penn vs Edgar. On paper, the challengers are the most likely candidates to beat the champs, but the champs are Anderson and Penn. I'm calling for a shutout in favor of the title holders, but the fights should still be interesting anyway! The Fighting Thread - Saz - 04-08-2010 There's a highlights show called UFC wired that's just started airing on Fiver. I've only seen one of the fights shown so far, so it's a good way for me to catch up. Also The Ultimate Fighter Welterweight (I think) has started too, with Tito and Chuck Lidel mentoring. I don't know if it's the most recent series or not, I'll be watching anyway since I enjoyed the Heavyweight Ultimate Fighter. The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-09-2010 yeah, that's the new season. The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-11-2010 ah, they're in abu dhabi so it's a totally different time zone than normal. it originally aired live at 1PM EST, but it's been replaying all day. sop://broker1.sopcast.com:3912/24267 127.0.0.1:8902 play the sopcast address with sopcast. but, to see it i had to open vlc player, go to media/open media, then select HTTP for protocol, and copy/paste the second address into the address bar. good quality. Co main event is on right now. BJ Penn vs Frankie Edgar. I'm pumped, but not drunk D: The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-11-2010 spoilerz okay, so edgar won that fight by decision. i don't know what the judges were watching, im going to check fightmetric as soon as they do stats on the match, but from what i saw penn dominated by a slight but clear margin. kinda upset about that. the silva-maia fight went as i expected. anderson did a lot of showboating, which really surprised me, but whatever. they did a lot of circling. i mean, there was more waling around in that fight than any other title fight i've seen in five years. but, i don't blame them. both fighters are good in all aspects, and that's fighting at the highest level. they don't gamble on wild swings or take high-risk chances. they just take the opportunities that come, and use them as best as they can. neither of them were really making mistakes, and while anderson had a clear advantage there was no opening to finish the fight. it really speaks volumes of maia that even anderson couldn't stop him. also, i think anderson gassed in the third round, maybe he had a little trouble cutting weight. The Fighting Thread - Mr. Zhu - 04-12-2010 Rod Hardwood Wrote:spoilerz I saw something completely different. While I'm quite happy that Frankie Edgar de-throned BJ, I saw him win the fight. Frankie used his speed well and got the take-down a couple of times and dominated the latter rounds. The judges agreed with me. Silva-Maia fight, I disagree completely. Silva could've finished that fight whenever he wanted, Damian is nowhere near where Silva is in striking. There was absolutely no chance for him to win the fight unless he could've taken Silva down and submitted him. As we've all seen in the Thales Leites fight, Silva just does what he does against Maia against any other jiu-jitsu ace. Damian made a lot of mistakes in that fight, but I don't understand why Silva didn't finish him. In the post-fight he said that he just wanted to punish him because of somethings Damian said in the pre-fight interview. Maia is just nowhere near Silva's league, and I think the only legit challenger at this point of Silva's career would be GSP or Lyoto Machida, maybe Nate Mardquardt. "there was no opening to finish the fight. it really speaks volumes of maia that even anderson couldn't stop him." I lol'd at this. While I do agree that Maia had a nice flurry towards the end of the fight, Silva absolutely dominated him. Silva could've finished the fight in the second minute of the fight if he tried to, when he knocked down Maia with that right cross. He chose not to for some reason. There were just too many holes in Maia's striking that Anderson Silva could've capitalized on, but he didn't. I do give Maia props though, he has heart, a lot of people would've asked for the towel if they had their nose broken and left eye swollen shut. The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-12-2010 nah, only one of those takedowns actually stuck, and it was only at the beginning of the fifth round. that first time penn went down edgar fumbled it. fightmetric has the numbers http://www.fightmetric.com/fights/Edgar-Penn.html they rate it as only one successful takedown, too. i was really pissed at the scores. one of the UFC judges actually had something like 49-46 edgar? does stuffing 11 shoots and throwing edgar off a 12th really not stack up against a single successful shoot? plus edgar ate a lot of punches on the failed attempts. plus they were only on the ground for a few seconds after the one successful takedown, edgar did nothing with it. as for strikes: penn threw more, landed more. but this is the UFC where judges are notorious for bad calls. my brother bet on edgar, and even he was disappointed that frankie won with that kind of performance. maia came in with a gameplan of not striking, and when you're fighting someone like anderson silva that's like having a gameplan of not fighting. it's boring to watch, but this is what happens when a non-striker fights a counter-striker. leites is another brazilian submission grappler which got the same results against anderson: lots of stuffed shoots, anderson dominating the stand up, and leites refusing to commit to striking. anderson gave maia a lot of really good attacks, but maia just rolled with the worst of it. counter striking hinges on the other guy stepping in for a serious attack, and both maia and leites would only got forward one or two steps at a time. the submission specialists are good at keeping their cool, because everybody else who fights anderson gets frustrated and charges forward into a KO. this is especially true for maia since he made one terrible mistake and got knocked out vs marquardt, he wasn't going to take any risks this time. blaming anderson for being in an awkward match-up is dumb. maia didn't make a lot of mistakes. it's just that from time to time he was forced to trade strikes with anderson, and anderson was pulling out all the stops. maia looked like he was clubbed after it was over, so stop saying anderson didn't try. he was trying his best in a bad matchup at a very important venue, and wore himself out prematurely trying to make it worth the ticket price. the only shame is that maia is a former ADCC champ and he fought scared (i lost track of how often he tried scooting on his butt, as if anderson would just lay into his guard). matt serra went to the first event in canada and took an assbeating from gsp, but at least he gave the crowd what they wanted so he's still fighting in the octagon. the silva-maia and silva-leites fights are what happens when two high level fighters can neutralize each other, and i really do think that's interesting, but notice that leites got one more fight after that performance with anderson (which he lost) and the UFC did not renew his contract. ufc112 was the first time that dana white actually got up and left before the main event was over, so i wouldn't be surprised if maia has to fight his way up from the absolute bottom to get another title shot. The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 04-25-2010 WEC 48: aldo vs faber. http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=74391&part=sports i dont watch the WEC very much, but it's a baby UFC run by the same people who do the UFC. it's a useful organization, i know some of the champs eventually go into the UFC and some losers in the UFC transition down to the WEC. they liquidated the WEC's middle weight division at one point and shifted a lot of the best fighters to the UFC, it's expected that the same will happen again soon with the lightweights. i've heard that aldo is being considered a new contender in best pound-for-pound lists. the former featherweight champ, mike brown, beat faber twice and aldo shut brown down, but this isn't dbz. it should be interesting. The Fighting Thread - Celena - 04-29-2010 Mayweather vs Mosley. I'm stoked. I think Mayweather will win on points, although I'd like to see Mosely knock him out, Mayweather's defence is just too good. The Fighting Thread - Celena - 05-01-2010 Jon Jones is a beast. Future world champion. The Fighting Thread - Saz - 05-03-2010 For all his defensive prowess and speed, Mayweather really doesn't have knockout power, does he. I can only recall about 3 times that's he's stopped an opponent, from the 7-8 fights I've seen of his. No doubt he's had a lot of K/O's in his earlier career, but recently, not so many. The Fighting Thread - Carter - 05-14-2010 If you are still watching 'only' ufc I recomend you take a look at strikeforce. Why? One reason. Cung Le. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xR9DKUk4YBM&feature=fvw The Fighting Thread - Mr. Zhu - 06-27-2010 Fedor lost. There is no god in this world. The communist regime has truly come to an end. GG. The Fighting Thread - Pinky - 06-27-2010 serious question: what is with everyone being gay for fedor? i never understood the appeal. sure, he has a lot of wins by stoppage, but that's just the nature of the heavyweight class. remember his fight vs andre arlovski? andre was knocking him around the whole fight, then fedor wings a wild overhand when he's stuck in the corner which surprises himself as much as everyone else. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKJKXFnRWts or the time he fought matt lindland, a middleweight, and would have been put on his back immediately if he hadn't clung to the ropes while the ref essentially watched it for 20 straight seconds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mC_5Cfky-o0 awful, but typical fedor. who're the other people he's fought recently? (i the term "recently" loosely, fedor only fights once or twice a year...) tim "the jab" sylvia? hong-man choi? mark coleman? bret rodgers? rofl i don't get it. looking forward to lesner vs carwin this weekend. The Fighting Thread - Psyren - 06-27-2010 As amazing as Carwain is right now Im a huge Lesnar fan and have been since he was in the WWE lol So yeah im rooting for lesnar on this one The Fighting Thread - Mr. Zhu - 06-27-2010 Rod Hardwood Wrote:serious question: what is with everyone being gay for fedor? i never understood the appeal. sure, he has a lot of wins by stoppage, but that's just the nature of the heavyweight class. remember his fight vs andre arlovski? andre was knocking him around the whole fight, then fedor wings a wild overhand when he's stuck in the corner which surprises himself as much as everyone else. ^ Mixed feelings. I like Fedor but I don't hug his nuts.. He is not invincible and that was demonstrated yesterday, but his legacy of destroying opponents and rarely being in jeopardy of losing a fight for over 10 years has already proven that he is and always will be one of the greatest ever. That said, even the best have to lose once in a while to become even better. The Fighting Thread - Celena - 06-27-2010 Lashley can beat Fador. As for Lesnar vs Carwin, I want Carwin to beat his ass. The Fighting Thread - Psyren - 06-27-2010 LAst night spike tv played UFC113 in entirety. Man Lyoto Machida and Shogun Rua are both amazing fighters. Have to say I jumped on the Rua band wagon. The Fighting Thread - Jesper - 06-28-2010 Kimbo needs to stop embarrassing himself. He's about ten years too late physically, and he has the mental fortitude of a small rodent. That said, even the best have to lose once in a while to become even better.the last noteworthy fight fedor had was against crocop... back in 2005. sure, he's had a decade-long win streak, but half of that time he was fighting nobodies or beating the odds against fighters that the UFC has gotten rid of years ago. his career has been hijacked by politics. he is one of those kinds of "champions" whose fights have been handpicked for years. not that i dislike the guy, he's actually a really nice and respectful person. i tip my hat to him for beating the odds against andre last year (similar to serra beating gsp or shogun literally doing the exact same winging overhand to lyoto in their rematch), but that's the biggest feather in his cap which says a lot. i'm mostly mystified by his zealous fanbase. heavyweight has always been the least competitive division worldwide, and the really dangerous hw fighters are in the UFC where he doesn't compete. |
