E3 2013 - Pinky - 06-13-2013 Sony is burning the house down. I've been frustrated with their PS3 being a bother to code for, resulting in major release delays and unfixed bugs (sold Skyrim before dlc came out). Was worried about all my current virtual content being left behind, and I was ready to jump ship to another platform if that happened. But PS4 is more dev friendly and all content will transfer, plus their buy sell trade loan system sounds good. Will def enjoy it more than this gen platform. I still dont understand why Microsoft thought their always-online, THE EYE OF MORDOR IS WATCHING YOU, super stupid used virtual market boondoggle was a good idea. Oh well. XB1 will be next gen's PS3 I guess. E3 2013 - Kole T. Merr - 06-13-2013 Where did you see that all the ps3 content would transfer? I swear that I read somewhere that it "couldn't" because of the hardware, but they were planning on giving you the ability to stream some of the "top" ps3 games. Also: Pinky Wrote:plus their buy sell trade loan system sounds good. Oh, you mean the thing that every game console already has? I'm so ok with that. E3 2013 - Orion - 06-15-2013 The only backwards compatible next gen is the Wii-U. I won't be much of a console gamer now, with the exception of Wii-U. The new consoles are just PCs with restrictions. Might as well be a core PC gamer now. E3 2013 - Blue - 06-15-2013 Anything that isn't an exclusive is almost always better played on a PC anyway. And the only exclusives I really care about are Nintendo. If anything, I'll just go to my friends' places if I wanna play Gears of War, God of War, Halo, etc. They're already talking about how they're gonna buy Sony or Microsoft stuff. Also, just found out Wii U has downloads for the Sega Master System. I'm shocked people other than myself even played on it. E3 2013 - Pinky - 06-17-2013 Kole T. Anything that works on PS3 will work on PS4, including PS1&2 games that are currently in the PS Store. Its likely going to work on new handheld systems, too. Have you looked at Microsoft's planned buy sell trade gimmick? They will charge a fee for every p2p virtual trade, plus you need to buy a game code to make used discs work. Its designed to make used games as expensive as buying it new. They're trying to shut off the used market. I don't even know how rental shops or GameStop will deal with it, but if Xbox is replaced by PlayStation it might not be too painful for them. E3 2013 - John Doe - 06-20-2013 http://www.giantbomb.com/articles/microsoft-to-pull-complete-reversal-on-xbox-one-dr/1100-4673/ "They should have called it the Xbox 180." E3 2013 - Kole T. Merr - 06-20-2013 L O L It's still $100 more expensive...if they took the Kinect out of the equation, it might actually compete with PS4 E3 2013 - Pinky - 06-20-2013 So Xbox won't crash and burn. PS4 still seems to be dev's platform of choice, though. E3 2013 - Shun - 06-20-2013 Most definitely. That game "Watch Dogs" looks amazing. Excited for that and "Arkham Origins." E3 2013 - Jonathan Meer - 06-21-2013 Pinky Wrote:So Xbox won't crash and burn. If it's the dev's platform of choice, then I expect the Xbox will crash and burn. They absolutely have to pull some serious exclusives, or they're just sunk. It's STILL an inferior product (5GB available RAM vs 7GB available RAM is relevant, and Sony's GPU is slightly better. All those big chunky Ubisoft games everyone loves? They're going to look better on the cheaper console. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft gets outsold 5 to 1. E3 2013 - John Doe - 06-21-2013 It changed from the Xbox180 crashing into the side of a mountain to a water landing in the middle of the ocean. It still crashed, but you don't have to worry about picking up little burnt Kinect parts. All those big chunky Ubisoft games everyone loves? They're going to look better on the cheaper console. I think a little bias is showing there. Microsoft will sell better now that the online requirements/used game fees are gone. They still have exclusives that will immediately make current Xbox users jump to the One (Halo, Killer Instinct, etc). The price difference isn't a giant chasm like it was with 360/PS3, $100 will count but it won't count like it did last gen. Ultimately those who'd like to stay with MS now have a much more viable option (though still not perfect), and I would be surprised if there was any large margin between the consoles. EDIT: I say this as a person who's not planning on buying either MS or Sony this gen. E3 2013 - Super Buu - 06-22-2013 I think the arguments that the Xbox will get sold 5 to 1 forget that the average consumer probably didn't watch E3, doesn't follow forums and blogs or reddit about it. They just heard there's going to be a new Xbox and they're totes psyched. They'll queue up outside of their closest store and buy it on the release for the new Halo. Or they'll ask their parents to get it because they loved the 360 and want the new one. I'm basically with Orion on this, though. I might get a PS4 because I missed out on a lot of PS3 exclusives I wanted to play. Or I might just get a PS3 once they become dirt cheap. But now that I have a gaming quality PC, I'm playing the vast majority of my games with no need to fuck around with disks or boxes, and for much much cheaper, and with better graphics. The only reason I'd get one of these consoles is for exclusives. E3 2013 - Jonathan Meer - 06-22-2013 Prototype Wrote:I think a little bias is showing there. That takes your list of two exclusives (with the 'etc.' I'd be interested to see your expansion of the 'etc') down to one, which currently has a release date of 'sometime in 2014'. The PS4 is getting Planetside 2, presumably as a free-to-play. That's a game that's caught a lot of buzz in the PC world, and will be right at home on consoles. Quote:The price difference isn't a giant chasm like it was with 360/PS3, $100 will count but it won't count like it did last gen. I think it'll be even more significant than last gen. Last gen, the PS3 was a more expensive machine, but it also delivered more: much better hardware, integrated WiFi, integrated Blu-Ray (which wasn't the victor at launch, but pretty quickly became the established format). This gen, the Xbox One is $100 more expensive for an _inferior product_. The systems are essentially equivalent in terms of the platform structure, but the PS4 has somewhat better components and less cruft (only 1GB of RAM devoted to the OS, rather than the 3GB reserved by the Xbox One). The performance differential is more significant than most places are letting on. Simply put, games will look better on the cheaper console. Microsoft needs to convince potential customers that they want a Kinect, and that the Kinect is worth the $100 differential (because really, that's what we're talking about here). But I don't know anyone who really gives a shit about that thing, and if I remember right, they didn't even MENTION the Kinect in their E3 conference (other than exercising some of the functionality through voice commands). The average consumer might not have watched E3, but the average consumer is probably friends with someone who did, and that friend is almost certainly chattering about how the Xbox got WHUPPED. Halo won't be around for the new release. All we have is an enigmatic '2014', and since we haven't seen gameplay, I'm guessing that'll be a late 2014. With no backwards compatibility, I seriously doubt we'll see many launch purchases from the 'Johnny Halo' demographic. Regardless, as best as I can tell, the Halo demographic is really young-to-middling teenagers. Kids who don't have $500. Microsoft's best hope is to solicit the Call of Duty crowd (teens to early-20s), but the CoD franchise will be around on the 360 and PS3 for awhile. Why upgrade? E3 2013 - Super Buu - 06-22-2013 I actually don't think either console is gonna do as well as expected this time around. The excitement of console generations, of what's gonna be next ... well, it's not a big deal anymore. We're coming to the end of that era. As you said, the current generations will probably still have the newer games for a while. PS4 I'm certain will do better, probably double the Xbox1's sales roundabouts. But it won't be much to sing about. E3 2013 - Vad - 06-22-2013 PC will slowly consume the console world. It's inevitable. E3 2013 - Sage - 06-24-2013 I wouldn't count the XB1 out just yet. I'm not getting one, that's for sure, but people said the 360 and original xbox wouldn't compete either, and the 360 turned out to have the lion's share of successful exclusives, and Halo arguably brought their first machine back from the brink to go on to be pretty successful. The PS4 is way better hardware but people don't care about specs anymore. They just buy whatever they think is cooler. How many "RAMs" you have is PC talk. Which, as a nice segue, is probably going to be my main gaming platform now. Since I can buy $60 games for about half that on PC. The overpriced hardware that comes with any decent computer is balanced by the cheap as hell hardware. So that's fantastic. I will say this, though. The current console war, at least among most of the people I know, is being met with nothing but apathy. We don't care. E3 2013 - Jonathan Meer - 06-24-2013 I disagree with basically every point in your analysis, Sage E3 2013 - Sage - 06-25-2013 Hahaha. I kind of figured you might.
