Hey guys finally bit and downloaded this game. Want someone to give me the run down.

Be a champion, kill all the minions, buy all the items, don't ever die, and win all the games.

Pretty simple.

Yeah I got in earlier this week. Level 3 now. It's all about repetition. After you learn the basics you just have to get a feel for the game. Which champion you work well with and develop your best approach through Runes and things of that nature. That's at least what I've been able to gather.

Definitely.

Honestly, the first thing I recommend doing is knowing what all the items are and what they do. You don't necessarily have to memorize all the stats and prices and so on (though you will if you stick with it long enough), but, for example, knowing that if you need both Armor and Ability Power in a game, you should be working on buying Zhonya's Hourglass can save you time and potentially annoyance having to shift through the shop. (Honestly, the new shop is pretty sick and makes it relatively easy to find items.)

Don't get too hung up on having a "main" champion. Try to identify mechanics you like (high spike damage, or ranged DPS, or unkillable tankiness) and find champions that use those to their advantage. Riot has traditionally done a pretty good job of providing an interesting array of free champs on a weekly basis.

Don't spend money on runes until you hit level... 21? I don't remember what level you need to be to buy Tier 3 runes, but only buy Tier 3 runes. Just better to save your money.

While I wouldn't say "don't waste time reading guides," I do caution relying on them too much. There are a lot of tools available for people to use, but I think it's easy to get too hung up on them. When you're starting out, its definitely helpful to be able to look at a guide for, say, Jungle Lee Sin and have an idea of what items you should be building, but definitely don't take any guide as gospel. And don't listen to idiots who start raging because you bought a Ravenous Hydra instead of a Bloodthirster. If you know why you bought an item, it doesn't matter if someone else does or not. They can worry about their own build.

The biggest thing, though, is you have to go into the game knowing there are going to be loses. Sometimes it'll be an awesome 60 minute game of constant back-and-forth plays and it'll be awesome. Other times your team will get completely demolished across the map and the game will be over at 16 minutes, but you have to just sit there and endure for 4 more. It's all just part of playing League and if you can't deal with a loss or with a game going poorly or even just someone making a bad play and potentially throwing the game, it will stop being fun really quickly.
