Prologue

Fire, Ice, Air, Light, Dark, Earth, Nature, Metal, Water, Electricity; the elements of the world. The most powerful forces on all of Earth and yet they lay untapped in the world of Alchemy. The secrets of six elements sill lie dormant, but the element of fire was loosed upon the world thanks to a man called Roy Mustang. He was a Colonel in the military at the time, as well as a State Alchemist. Because fire was his specialty in Alchemy, he was nicknamed the Flame Alchemist. His stumbling across the element of fire in the year 2003 was only the beginning of the beginning. He had no knowledge of the other elements that existed in the world. Prophecies in lands unknown by Roy tell of the elements to follow fire in its finding; Air, Ice, and Dark. The rest of the elements are supposedly just found shortly after the last of the three, these being the final pieces in the intricate puzzle; Light, Earth, Nature, Metal, Water, and Electricity.

The story starts in a town just outside Central Headquarters with three friends who wish to become State Alchemists. The date is September 17th, 2007, exactly four years since Roy Mustang discovered the element of fire. He is no longer a Colonel, but now a Brigadier General in the military. Already have the elements of Air, Ice, and Darkness been found, each one a new master to reside in. Who knows how many more elements have been found?

Chapter 1

Malik, master of Darkness. Colin, master of Ice. Sarah, master of Air. Three friends living in the town of Ki-Sona, a town founded two years ago in 2005. It was located just outside the Central Headquarters for the military.

Malik was a black teenage boy, being 16? years of age. His hair was short, but the boy was thinking of growing it out. He was fond of wearing black trench coats and arm warmers with chains. These arm warmers always contained the Alchemy circle of darkness for the boy was the elements new master. The element suited Malik, for it was said that he had lived in hell before coming to Ki-Sona. The boy took a liking to the story; he had said that was the reason for his skin being black. It was a joke of course. Malik was the most silent of the group, never speaking unless he felt like it and when there was time.

Colin was a white, male teenager who was slightly heavy set. He was 17 years old, the oldest of the three. Short, straight, maple brown hair topped his head. Colin mainly wore a clay red hoodie and a pair of shorts, any type. The shorts were odd for him to wear, considering where he grew up. This boy came from a country that experienced very harsh winters, which was why he was the new ice master. Colin was picked on a lot when he lived in his home country, due to his being different; he was skinnier than most. However, he learned to shut the insults out, much like his family when sheltering from the weather. The new Ice master had an odd personality; he never looked or acted sad. He was mainly the clown of the group, but he didn?t mind that.

Sarah was female, as her name suggested, and was a teenager, like her friends, being 16. She had long brownish hair that went down to her back whenever she wore it in a pony tail, which was most of the time. Sarah?s normal wardrobe consisted of jeans and a black t-shirt. Some of those T-Shirts had cats on them, others had other stuff. She had learned to live with being the youngest of the three, but she was smarter than both Colin and Malik. Due to her sharp tongue and flexibility on most subjects, the brunette became the new air master. Roy Mustang, the famous Flame Alchemist, was the girl?s uncle, from her mother?s side. Sarah and Roy did not share the same last name however. Sarah was the tactical genius of the group, but she did not like brag about it.

The fact that Sarah and Roy were related made it a must that the three got to the State Alchemist trials on time. The triumvirate, as Colonel Hughes nicknamed them, had been studying and training their unique alchemies for this day for five months. There was no way either of them would fail or so they hoped.

Maes Hughes was one of Roy Mustang?s best friends and one of the most annoying. The man could not go five seconds without ranting on about his family, mainly his daughter Elicia. Maes always had a picture of his four year old daughter somewhere on his person. There was a new story of his family every week and he told that story over and over again to anyone stupid enough not to just get up and leave. The Colonel did not care if he knew you had heard his story, he loved telling them.

The time was 10:41 AM as Malik, Colin, and Sarah raced under the gates that served as an entry and exit to Ki-Sona.

?We gotta move faster!? Colin shouted to his friends. All of them were running as fast and as hard as they could. Their legs were blurred with motion as they kept moving forward. All of their breathing was in sync, if not for the tamping of their feet you could have heard each breath they took. ?We have 19 minutes left till we?re late! Sarah, can you give us a boost with your air Alchemy??

?No way!? the girl shouted back in a slightly bitter manner. ?Using Alchemy would just waste the energy we will need for the State Alchemist trials.? It was at times like these that she wondered if Colin actually had brain function.

Suddenly and without any warning what so ever, Malik stopped running. Taking a backpack he always wore off, he unzipped it quickly and took out a shiny pair of roller blades he had made himself.

?What in Frost?s name are you doing?!? Colin shouted back at the black teen, hints of anger evident his voice. Both he and Sarah were still running, they knew that time was of the essence. ?Don?t make us herd you like a sheep!? The bigger male glanced over his shoulder quickly, only to not see his friend there anymore. Malik was always fast at putting his blades on; it was due to him manipulating the material he had made them with.

?Call me sheep again and you die,? Malik replied, annoyance on the tip of his tongue. He had caught up to his older friend with practiced ease, startling Colin in the process. Malik glided over the road with ease, easily passing Sarah who was up farther than Colin. ?I?ll go on ahead and tell them to wait if you don?t show up on time,? Malik said to the girl. He looked at his watch; it said 10:47 AM. ?You have thirteen minutes, but you can make it. We?re already halfway there.?

?Just go already!? Sarah shouted, laughing at the same time. ?Otherwise the whole purpose of you putting those things on is screwed!?

Malik said nothing as his facial expression grew into a serious one. It was a scary look, always was. That look was always full of determination rivaled by no-one. The boy glided out in front, giving a wave and disappearing.

Looking behind her, Sarah meant to check up on Colin?s progress, but it was not needed. Instead she saw a military jeep with a familiar face at the wheel pick the boy up. The brunette gave a sigh of relief as she stopped her legs from moving.

?Need a lift?? Hughes asked as Sarah approached the military vehicle. She nodded as she hopped into the back seat next to Colin. ?Now that you?re here?? Hughes started, reaching his hand into on of his coat pockets. ?Have you seen my new pictures of Elicia?!? The Colonel?s hand whizzed out of his pocket, three pictures of a cute, four year old girl in-between his fingers.

?Just move!? both Sarah and Colin shouted at the man. They should have expected it; Hughes was a hardcore family man after all.

?Alright! Alright!? Hughes replied, reluctantly putting his pictures back into his pocket. ?Now hold on! These military jeeps don?t have seat belts, not even the driver.? The old man punched the gas pedal with his foot, causing the jeep to rocket forwards. A minute later and they came up to Malik, but they did not stop.

The black teenager?s head snapped up as he heard the military vehicle. Using his left hand, he unfastened his chain on his right arm warmer. Malik had only done this once before and his target was a lot slower than the military issued jeep. This mattered not to the boy however and he only swung the chain once before sending the front end flying towards the back of the jeep. The silver links sailed forward, cutting the air before then until the end attached itself to the rear bumper of the vehicle. Malik?s chains were longer that people realized; the extra stuff that no one saw was stuffed into pockets that were inside the trench coat the boy wore. The pockets were just below the sleeve.

As soon as the chain attached, the master of Darkness held on for dear life. The links tightened as their owner shot forward, luckily not losing his balance in the process. As a note, Malik did all this while still skating on his own. The time on the boy?s watch now read 10:53 AM.

?Seven minutes left,? Malik muttered to himself as the jeep entered Central Headquarters property. The three still had plenty of time by the time by the time they stopped at the testing area.

?How was your ride Malik?? Hughes asked the boy, chuckling. The older man got out of the jeep; Sarah and Colin followed suit. Five seconds later and the black teen already had his skates off.

?Don?t get me wrong, it was fun? but I am never doing that again!? Malik exclaimed, joining his friends. There was a hint of tiredness in his voice, even though it was evident that the boy was not tired. ?Now let?s go in shall we? It?s the written test first!? Malik was a little to enthusiastic at that point. Grabbing his bigger friend?s shoulders, Malik shoved him forward, following Sarah.

?Would you get off me?? Colin calmly asked his friend. Letting go of the bigger guys shoulders, Malik continued to walk forward.

?Good luck!? Hughes shouted, getting back into the military issued jeep. ?I?ve got family stories to tell you when you?re done!?

Sarah turned to address the older man. She was still walking, just backwards at that point.

?We?ll be avoiding you then!? the brunette shouted jokingly back in reply. Facing forwards, she almost slammed into the door of the building, but she managed to avoid the catastrophe. Saying nothing, she opened the door and the triumvirate, in its entirety, stepped through the threshold.

?Glad you three could make it on time,? the voice of Brigadier General Roy Mustang met the three friends as they walked in. ?Take a seat cause we?re starting the test in a few minutes.?

The three sat down in a triangle formation near the front of the room. All of their eyes were immediately drawn to a male in the back far corner. His hair was short, almost like Colin?s; a blondish/brown color. He wore a white t-shirt that contained some sort of tribunal symbol on it. A pair of baggy camo pants adorned his legs. The boy looked like he was around Malik?s age. He was white and skinny, but didn?t look the least bit weak. His head was tilted slightly to the right and it looked as if he was staring into nothingness.

?What am I to you?? the odd boy suddenly said. His head nor eyes moved, just his mouth. It was obvious that he was talking to the three friends who, at that time, could not keep themselves from staring. ?You seagulls always find something shiny and interesting, then sit there transfixed. Its as if you were on a very powerful drug.? It was at that point that the triumvirate saw the thing the male was holding. They averted their eyes and went into a huddle as the weird male put the object into a pocket.

?That?s an element stone,? Malik said quietly.

?Yeah, looks just like the ones each of us found right after we mastered our element,? Sarah continued.

?Which can only mean that he?s an elemental alchemist, like us and your uncle,? Colin said, directing that comment to Sarah.

?I suggest calming the big guy down,? the mysterious male said in a calm fashion that creped the triumvirate out.

?What do you mean by that?? Colin asked in reply. He wanted to add the word freak in there, but was afraid of instigating an all out fight.

?Your tapping your foot nervously. I can feel the vibrations in the ground. Get a hold of nerves and just cool yourself down. You seem capable of that,? the boy said, his head and eyes still in place. The boy spoke wisely, but all Colin did was speed his foot tapping up. It was his way of calming himself. In a few seconds the tapping stopped all together; a good sign.

?Enough talking,? Roy said suddenly. Everyone but the odd boy turned to look at the Brigadier General, who now had pieces of paper in his hands. He took a few seconds to pass the papers out, and then hit a timer that was on the front wall. ?You have an hour. If you talk, I?ll torch your test. If you don?t finish in time, don?t worry, you may still pass.? The majestic Roy Mustang finished talking and sat in an incredible looking wheelie chair that was located in the front of the room.

Everyone started at the same time. Their pencil?s clicked on the wooden desks that they sat at. Other than Colin, Sarah, Malik, and the odd teenager, there were only two other people taking the tests; both older than all four by around five years. One of those decided to be stupid.

?Will you rea?? he didn?t get to finish his sentence before the Flame Alchemist snapped his fingers. Blue and white sparks danced around the man?s snow white gloves. Those gloves were special, hence the pretty light show. They both held the Alchemy symbol of fire on top of each glove. The gloves themselves were made of a unique material so that whenever Roy snapped his fingers, it created friction, which in turn created heat. With the fire Alchemy symbol, the heat and friction created any type of fire the Brigadier General wished. At that time, Mustang flicked a stream of yellow-orange fire at the man?s test paper, causing it to catch fire and burn to ashes.

?Leave, now!? was all Roy said. No one paid attention as the man left, his head hung low with shame and stupidity. No one saw the odd boy curl his left hand fingers into a tight fist about a minute after the man left.

Ten total minutes of clicking of pencil tips later and the loner got up and turned his test in to the flame Alchemist. Heading for the door immediately, he drew a few eyes because of the fingerless gloves he was putting on. He opened the door, letting light and the putrid smell of death flood into the room, permeating it instantly.

?I knew it. The vibrations are never wrong,? the teenager said. ?God, I knew it!? He slammed a gloved fist into the wall, which was made of stone, causing it to shatter in a blinding flash of sparks. By that time, the Brigadier General was up and out of his comfy wheelie chair.

?What the hell?!? Roy shouted questioningly seeing the hole where the wall used to be. However, his eyes, as were everyone else?s, were drawn to something new and ten minutes dead.

It was the man who had had his test torched and told to leave. He was almost unrecognizable with all the metal protruding from his now dead body. Large, long, metal spikes had come out of the ground and now held the corpse suspended about twenty feet in the air. Crimson droplets fell like rain, coming from the throat, shoulders, and knees; the five main points of penetration. Unseen, Colin smiled to himself, letting the sight of the dead man engulf his vision. The Ice master was completely elated. His heart began to beat faster as the stink of death entered his nostrils. Colin had always been fascinated with death, killing, and all those kind of related topics. None of his friends knew of course, it would devastate them. All they cared about was life while Colin only cared for watching people experience death. He was able to control that urge though, which was why he had friends.

?I can?t allow you to continue to stare like the seagulls you are,? the odd boy suddenly said. His head was hung low; an expression of extreme sadness evident on his face. Bending down, the boy drew an Alchemy symbol amongst the rubble of the destroyed wall. The wall rebuilt itself in a flurry of sparks and stone once the circle was activated. ?My name is Sean. I know for a fact that I passed this test, as will you three. I will see you at the final trials,? Sean said, addressing the triumvirate. He left quickly knowing no one would answer. The test was still in progress; their tests would have been incinerated.
