While it is true that Crystals possess elemental energy, that energy can be channeled as pure energy. There are some mages who prefer to use energy in this pure, unfiltered state, but it has a wide variety of applications. Most commonly it is used to strength a mage's body, allowing them to jump higher or run faster. Metaphysically the pure magic can be used to perform spells such as telekinesis or levitation, but has as many uses as the elemental energy from crystals.
When casting spells, a mage may use any element of Crystal to produce the energy required for non-elemental effects.
