it's a movie. it's assumed that reality takes a back seat to entertainment. srsly, your idea of a good plot is aliens farming space minerals ala WOW, the world's most boring part of the world's most boring videogame genre. :[

I don't think that is a good plot, I am saying that would be the logical choice. I watched Independence Day when I was a kid and thought this, it just became more difficult to follow as the story progressed.

The computer virus just pushed me over the edge at the end, I was like fuck this shit.

To point out: the MMO farming asteroid comment actually is referring to EVE Online, which does exactly that - has you farm asteroids for cash and repeat, all day, every day. For the most part, I haven't played it to verify.
