I understand the more CC you have in the team... the better...

Same with globals and such.

I'm obviously not intune to situational, but I have heard Jarka and someone to the Poppy/Blitz combo and Tryg and Kaden mention things before as well.

I know certain people counter certain people and certain people have late and early game type stuff....

I'm just wondering if someone could give me a few random situations that might help me broaden my thought process?

Situational picks require an in-depth knowledge of what each character does. It seems foreboding, but Tryg and Kaden have been playing for 2 years. They've had plenty of time to learn all the champions/how they work.

A great example is Galio. He counters AP casters hardcore. So if you see the enemy team is heavy on AP you pick him for the tank. His abilities get boosted off how much Magic Resist he has so it's perfect.

One of the best examples of a situational pick is Katarina. She can be incredibly strong given the right situation and proper play. If the enemy team has a lot of strong cc (stuns, knockbacks/knockups and such) then she's not really the best of picks because her ult isn't going to do a whole lot most of the time if the enemy plays right. She also kind of wants a team that can get and keep the enemy team grouped up and in a small area.

Take these two sets of team picks... You are on purple team on both and last pick.

Blue team has Olaf top, Nocturne Jungle, Karthus mid, Graves and Soraka bot.
Purple team has Malphite top, Naut jungle, Corki and Janna bot.
This would be a perfect time to pick Kat for mid due to lack of cc from blue team and a fair bit of it on purple team.

Though if it looked like...
Blue team has Udyr top, Annie mid, Naut Jungle, Vayne Alistar bot.
Then it doesn't matter what your purple team looks like, every single person on the enemy team has a way to screw Kat up. She's almost guaranteed to never get a full ult off.

There's a lot of characters that are good situational picks and such, as Vad says, it mostly comes down to knowing what most every champ can do and how they play fairly decently.

Yeah, I think the same thing often. Seems daunting.

The most common situational elements you'll run into are CC, tankiness, and damage type. As Vad pointed out, Galio is good against lots of magic damage. Tryg already explained Kat and CC. Champions like Kog, Vayne, Malz, and Nasus are good against tankier teams because of their %-based damage.

There are more specific cases (no hard-CC, but everyone can permaslow; everyone has a blink; everyone has a heal; etc.) but those are really the most common things you'll want to be aware of when thinking about "counter" picking a comp.

Black cleaver is a situational item. For one thing since it builds out of a BF sword, most of the time you won't be able to buy it anyway since you will usually want IE or BT out of a bf sword. But there are some times when you'll want a BC, and that's mostly when the enemy just isn't building armor. If they have almost no chain mails (or the items it builds into), then a BC can do some serious work in decimating what little armor they do have. However, if they have at least 70 armor or more, then you are almost always better off with a LW.

As for getting both of them, it's very rare that you'll want to do that. They kind of work against each other, with the cleaver making the last whisper a bit worse because of how reductions are stacked. The priority for how armor (or magic) reductions are stacked goes Flat Armor Reduction -> % Armor Reduction -> Flat Armor Pen -> % Armor Pen. So BC falls under the first part of that and LW falls under the last, so the BC ends up making the LW reduce less armor overall. Same rule applies for Abyssal Scepter and Void staff for magic reduction as well, but the Abyssal Scepter has the added advantage of giving MR, so a lot of the time it's okay to build both of those.

While you might get their armor lower overall by using both, the reason I say you usually don't want both is because of the utility of the other items you can build out of a BF sword. You'll end up getting more dmg out of an IE + PD + LW than you would with a BC + PD + LW or something similar, as well as the fact that the lifesteal you get from having a BT will keep you in the fight longer allowing you to do more dmg overall instead of having a BC.

TL : DR - Get BC if enemy team isn't building chain mail items, otherwise get LW. Don't get both.

So after messing with Sion... again, and not looking at Solomid.net, I decided to try a build and see how far it would go if I maxed it out.

With these I had the following.

Attack:474
AttSpeed:.823
Movement: 410
Armor:140
MagDef:67
Health: 5749(His E had 1366 Bonus Health accrued)
Mana: 2270


That's right... This is my AD/Health build. I seem to like FH on him and since I used him as AD and the main focus on that is his E steroid, getting Atmas seems pretty smart.

Note: I did Grab Dorans Blade First.

Because of this, Warmogs seems pretty smart choice too. I do wonder if grabbing a Phantoms Dancer might be a better help though...

Boots 3. I like it for the chase. Boots 5 becomes 2 in a fight though good for map movement. Sure I coulda grabbed Merc Treads but this was a test run and I did it in a 1v1 bot game. But I probably would have went AS boots for the attack speed.

Why Blood Thirster? Grabbing an early Vamp Scepter counters the health loss from his E and BT seems the best choice from it.

Why Manamune? The Tear of Goddess and and the cheap mana regen item before it help with more stuns. And each attack(every 3 seconds boosts his mana by 1) Randomly spamming the Sheild spell when not in need of extra mana helps max the 1k mana from the item.


But yeah this is the build I created. Its more of a late game build, as in 45-60 minutes late.

I know it would suck against an AP heavy Team, and I know some people say AP Sion is better.

But this is me trying out a build.

It takes like 5 hits to take a tower with minions around them. With Buffs/Elixirs and waiting till your half health he can solo baron.

What you guys think?

Just build Graves like any DPS. Rank Q first, then his AS buff, then his smokescreen.

Build Inifinity Edge, Phantom Dancer, Last Whisper/Bloodthirster, and Guardian Angel/Quicksilver Sash.

Pretty standard stuff.
