The whole idea behind gathering pupils is that they award a free 1xp to their Master every time they level up. To prevent severe abuse, characters are limited to only X amount of pupil-level-xp per hour or day or something so you shouldn't bother with making too many of them. The best way is to get OTHER people to be your pupil - the #1 guy on the leaderboard has only chosen to participate in less than 10 actual fights but he has 1,700 pupils, and he simply garners xp on a regular basis from other people playing the game.
