Like I said, the musicians may have the talent to play, but their sound usually stems from a producer; today that is.
I can't remember if the Beatles had a producer. I know that John and Paul were the the composers of the group. Paul was a romantic and John was the rock and roller, being the brooding character. A stark example would we "We Can Work it Out." Paul wrote the verses and John wrote the chorus.
But back on track. That's why people complain about sound and whatnot from their favorite band. The producers change and each one does something different.
