I'm actually super-excited about all the stuff I'm gonna try to make once I've got a bit further in this book. Of course, 'crazy-ass RPG training program' is top of the list.
I'd suggest you start out learning from a book and decide if you really want to lose part of your soul by becoming a code monkey. Once you get further into it you might decide you want to take some classes, probably one more focused on game programming.
I would also start by learning a .NET-compliant language.
