I was a hyperactive child, and extremely embarrassed for it. As a clear instance of ADHD, I was constantly picked on for those tendencies: abundant energy, bizarre train of thoughts, etc.
I wanted nothing more than to change, and couldn't. In college, my grades suffered for it (I lost the abundant energy mostly, but still had extreme difficulty focusing; I once spent a full sixty minutes staring at a page of Rousseau, with my eyes scanning the page, completely unable to take anything in. Well-rested, no coffee, didn't drink anything weird, etc).
Telling a hyperactive child to 'get the fuck over it' is much like telling a suicidal teen the same. Which is to say it is super helpful.
