In regards to builds and everything, I'm not sure which game you are talking about, but one of the main things I want to stress is to be flexible in builds and such. There's never one "perfect build" that works, with maybe the exception being ranged ad's almost all using IE/PD/LW core and such. I tend to build based against my lane and the rest of the team.
As for the game you're talking about, I'm not sure which that was, can you refresh my memory and I can try to explain why I built whatever it was I built..
Frozen mallet on Yi can be good depending on how much you're in the middle of fights and how much they are focusing you. It's not an always build item, but after a while you should figure out when it's worth it to build.
