I really don't like that it has become socially unacceptable to use certain collective nouns without accounting for every possible exception, no matter how few.
When I meet a man who tells me he's married, I assume he has a wife (unless I'm getting distinctive gay vibes). Not because I'm anti-gay, but because 99.78341% (repeating of course) of married people in my state are heterosexually coupled.
