I personally have no problem with linear sagas. It's pretty annoying when you have a set idea for a saga you're running, and someone does something that makes you go "That's not really what I intended for this to be at all!"
That said, it's fine to leave the ending open - after all, it's no fun when you know which side will win, but if you leave it too open-ended or too like a "sandbox" design, the story will go off into too many tangents and get a tad ridiculous. That's what I think, anyway.
