Xander Halliwell had been lying on his bed, dreamily looking at the ceiling, when he heard a frustrated cry erupt from down the hall. Fearing his brother to be in some kind of danger, the youth dove from his bed and charged down the hall. He heard the sound of plastic exploding and realized the harmlessness of the situation. Rounding the corner, he saw his twin, Tidus glaring at the shattered remnants of his Playstation 2 controller.
?Another broken controller?? Xander asked, smirking at his crouched brother. Tidus turned up, nearly hitting his head of the overhead light fixture. Both Halliwell twins were tall compared to most people their age, and the low ceilings of their apartment were a curse. Trying to play of his frustration, Tidus walked out of the room, shaking his head and feigning a smirk. Chuckling at his brother?s behavior, Xander returned to his room. He closed the door behind him and took a sit on the edge of his bed. Today was the last day of the weekend, and for both twins, that meant their last chance to enjoy themselves before college classes resumed. Sifting through a pile of unwashed clothes, Xander located his Super Nintendo controller and brushed a dirty sock off it. The relic of ages past was still in perfect shape.
Although they were twins in all regards, the brothers varied in their choice of gaming. Tidus, the older of the two by fifty seconds, preferred Sony, but Xander had been a self-proclaimed Nintendo zealot since the days of the Nintendo Entertainment System. Softly putting the Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Starts cartridge into the machine, Xander gently turned the power on and picked up a half-empty bottle of vodka from beneath his jumbled bed sheets. Xander bobbed his head, loving the infectious music of the game; however, his enjoyment soon turned sour when the television screen began to swirl and churn. The menu vanished into a blur of ones and zeros, and before the man could react, he fell unconscious and was enveloped in a stream of numbers.
Xander regained consciousness, uttering a soft curse word and sitting up. Without realizing where he was, he rubbed his eyes and started to glance around. Almost immediately, his eyes doubled in size. Not only was he in some kind of rain forest, but a free-floating, ball of fire was smiling at him.
?Howdy!? The puff of fire said, grinning widely at Xander. The creature, which already seemed anatomically impossible, had a mouth filled with shiny, white teeth, ?welcome to File Island!? Startled by the strange, enthusiastic creature, the man shot of his feet, falling backwards in his mad rush to escape. When Xander hit the ground, he noticed a tiny device resting on the ground in front of his eyes. Righting himself, he picked up the apparatus and was once again joined by the floating fireball.
?Where am I?? He asked, having realized the bizarre creature apparently meant him no harm.
?You are on File Island, Xander. My name is DemiMeramon, and I am a Digimon. Even better, I?m your new partner! Nice to meet?cha!? Although he was startled this ?Digimon? knew his name, Xander found himself more interested in the strange, gray device. It was shaped almost like a rounded addition sign, with a small display in the center. Flashing the device to the creature elicited another response from it, ?that?s a digivice!? Although he was confused at the entire situation, Xander knew that sitting around in the strange jungle wouldn?t get anything done.
?Let?s get moving, DemiMeramon,? Xander said, standing back up. The orange puff of fire let out a happy squeak and did a backflip. Grinning at the childish antics of the creature, Xander started in a random direction, followed closely by DemiMeramon.
