And So It Begins... (POST HERE FIRST)
#11
In the parking lot, all was still. It was night time in the middle of July, so this was rather surprising. Normally kids would be in and out, getting Slurpees, not giving a fuck about life, just laughing away as cashier rang them up, took their money, and gave them change, going in an endless cycle until he or she got off. That was Matsuo Shun?s job at the local 7-Eleven, and for once, he was glad to be working. Glad that he didn?t have to do as much as usual, even if it seemed a bit irregular.

He was just getting off work, just slamming the door of the ?Employees Only? area and moving into the alley, with his uniform still on. He placed the pay check he got for this month into his pocket and quickly rushing away into the black night, not bothering to notice anything or examine it, as he was in deep thought. Tonight was the anniversary of something highly important. Something that had affected his life and set it on the course he was currently on. Digging into his pocket, Matsuo produced a small locket. He flicked it open.

There was a face of an old woman with a worn face. A face so very familiar.

The boy sat on a red leather chair with a metal frame in the middle of a hospital waiting room. He stared out towards the emergency room doors, watching as doctors streamed in and out continuously, going about their business. Beside the boy was a grown man. He seemed to be in his forties, with grey starting to form amongst the black hairs on his head. He had a resemblance to the boy beside him. He stared as well, gripping his knee from the constant silence of the room.

Soon enough, a doctor broke through the doors, standing out from the others. His face was grim and seemed to bearing a great burden. He approached the boy and the man, his head held low.

?I?m sorry sir. But?she?s gone.? The doctor said seldomly. The man stared blankly into the air.

Matsuo snapped the locket shut and stuffed it back in his pocket, not bothering to care anymore. He didn?t even know her. He was far too young to have even remembered. He trudged on, using sidewalk to make his way up to the main road. Matsuo began to walk along it, taking short steps taking no notice of those who walked amongst him. He went like this for awhile until he came to a restaurant.

It was a simple Chinese food place at street corner just down the street from where he worked. He went here as he couldn?t cook anything. Period. Matsuo walked in, hearing the little bell chime above his head as he entered into to this massive cultural atmosphere. One not even his own. He approached the counter and smiled at the cashier.

?Matsuo!? The man shouted joyfully with an obvious accent. ?Just a moment, we have your noodles ready for you already.? He nodded happily and soon enough, another man came from the back room, beyond the tables of the people out for a night on the town. He passed the bag to Matsuo, and then returned from whence he came.

?Thanks a lot?? Matsuo said in his usual hoarse voice as he got out his wallet and paid the man before walking out, back down the streets, for a little while, still not talking to anyone. He was always like that: never caring for anyone else. Just moving forward.

After a bit longer, Matsuo arrived at his new destination: an apartment complex. The place he called home. He went inside and took the elevator to the floor with his room on it. He rushed to his room from there, opening the door and walking into a warming atmosphere. Well, it was to him at least. There was a fancy computer with a nice desk, but from there it went down hill. A crappy kitchen, bedroom out of order, clothes everywhere. Typical college room atmosphere, which made Matsuo love it. He sat down at his computer and booted it up.

The boy sat at his computer desk in his bedroom, now far more grown up then he was before. A teenager in all attributes. He sat, surfing this fresh new thing, he called the web, until he came across something.

?What?a MUD?? Curiously, the boy dug in farther. ?How to program a MUD??

Matsuo always remembered his days as a MUD programmer whenever he booted up his computer. He couldn?t remember why he loved it, but he just did. That?s what he was taking in College. A course on programming in Visual Basic. Him, gaming and programming on his computer took away the pain of what happened so long ago.

He quickly opened a couple of programs and went about his regular business of doing his homework, chatting on AIM, maybe getting in a quick game of Counter-Strike in, until he noticed something odd which occurred about an hour into his normal routine.

As Matsuo rose to get a drink from his fridge, he spotted it. A light coming from under a pile of clothes. He adjusted his glasses to make sure he was seeing straight, and then curiosity got the best of him. What could that be? An old computer part reflecting light from the screen? Too bright for that. He dug into the heap and revealed a small device.

?What the hell is this?? Matsuo inquired to no one in particular, but there was one thing he knew, it had a bright screen. ?Must be some little MP3 player or something?? Suddenly, on the screen, a little creature appeared, a ball of fire floating around, just moving around.

?A virtual pet? I don?t ha-? Matsuo couldn?t finish his sentence, as he was overcome by the light from the device. He blinked once to see white all around him, then once again, to find himself?

Above a waterfall.

He fell all the way down, screaming as he went, until he hit the water, nearly drowning from the force of the water pushing him under. He pushed his way to surface and swim furiously to the shore, gasping for breath. He crawled out, coughing out some liquid before looking up to see the same ball of flame on his screen!

?Hello Matsuo! Welcome to the Digital World!?

OOC: Ugh, no name variety. Oh well.

File Island, near a waterfall.
