we might also never find it. Apparently can spawn totally underground, which is kind of exactly the opposite of what I wanted.

But they're incredibly big, but yes, we could be incredibly unlucky and never find it.

They CURRENTLY only spawn one per world, due to a lack of full integration. They want to release bosses inside them, and since the bosses aren't ready, they currently wanted just one per world. NPC villages seem to not be very abundant either (and are also still missing their NPCs).
They have made comments that lead to the belief that they will increase the spawn rate of strongholds later. So unfortunately, patch 1.8 going into another patch might be extremely frustrating for SMP. Especially since if your world is pre-1.8 in any way like our world, it supposedly will not generate a stronghold at all even after exploring further chunks.

I'm not saying "Do it" so much as "Just to note that it is possible". My understanding is that in order to do something like this, you'd have to essentially purchase two servers or whatever so you could host two maps instead of one.

Well if Josh is getting one ANYWAYS, that would be cool if it happened to work out.

So, curiosity: Why do people want the old world so bad anyway? If this portal thing happened, how many people would actually go back to the old world, and why? As far as I can tell, just taking ample screenshots of your favorite structures serves the same purpose as having another world you'll visit once in a great while to behold your old creations.
Disclaimer: No douche intended if it sounds at all like that, just can't figure out why so many people want the old world still.

What that guy did was replace the Nether map with the old map. There isn't two servers. He made it so that when you entered a nether portal you were transported to the 1.7 map.

No, the reference to the nether was an analogy to the way the connectivity with the old world would work. There's nothing there that indicates the old world overwrote the nether. Likely, some small mod was written for it (either by a community member, or by the guy himself that allowed for the creation of portals that 'teleport' an individual, like a nether portal does. Then, just figure out how to get the 'old world' to register as a destination just as the nether registers as a potential destination, and hey presto; no need for two servers.

Right. I was under the assumption the nethermap had it's own file. Upon looking in the directories I have been proven wrong. Whoops.

Doesn't Tryg have one and then if Josh gets one that's two. Can it not work if the two servers are owned by different people?

Apologies, as it had apparently not been posted publicly, but Tryg is no longer able to fund running a server. He's transferred everything over to Josh who will be running it from now on.

We have a second world running on the PA server (our skyworld map) that you can just teleport back and forth from. As far as I know it's running on just the one server, they're just use heavy server mods for it.

Yeah, I'm sorry about that, I thought I had posted that I wasn't keeping my old one. I've had my pay dropped (haven't been working as much) a fair bit, so I just can't afford it anymore.
