I don't get any sense of satisfaction from playing a game that way. If other people do, that's awesome.
Shit, just ask me how I built my mage and then try to win. I dare you.
EDIT: This has really crushed my desire to play this game. Maybe I'll try going to a different town other than Redcliffe and see what happens, but I'm pretty pissed about it.

I think I'm going to go duelist, with maybe secondary of Ranger. Duelist for the most amazing skill, Pinpoint Strike, which makes all of my attacks crits for a while. This, combined with using main-hand weapons like swords or axes in each hand will give me lots of dps. I also want to be able to summon shit, hence ranger secondary.
EDIT: I also looked at skill stuff. Kaden, Rogues do indeed get more skills. 1 skill point every 2 levels rather than every 3.

Redcliffe is also a really tough area, Orion. There's plenty easier zones you can build yourself up at before taking on that wave of zombie.

Yeah? I assumed it would be easy since Alister kept prattling on about it. Maybe I'll try visiting the mages first.

I made the same assumption. I figured the game would herd you into a simple area at the start, and not a death trap. XD
I wound up winning with a poor build, btw. But I had to run away from the lake, up the mountain. The skeletons engaged the knights I had left to defend the mountaintop and killed everyone. I was the only survivor.

The elves forest seems a fairly good place to start, the only impossible battles there are sidequest ones you can come back to later. Denerim is also chock full of sidequests you can do without advancing the story, which I actually found more fun than some of the main story stuff.
I think it'd be pretty hard to have a fucked build by the end of the game, just at early-mid game some builds already have their killer abilities and others don't, so the disparity can be pretty big. My mage is basically jack-of-all-trades and he's still kicking ass.

Denerim however can screw you over. Their ambushes can consist of the civilized traps built to trap 1 or 2 of your party members away from the rest of the party as 8 archers pop up (from behind barricades so you cannot return fire) and start flinging arrows at you while there's 20 traps on the ground. Denerim bandits hare hardcore.

Thanks, Teemer.
No one really answered my question about Templars. =(
As you get further into the game, does it make sense to take a specialization that builds your magic resistance and gives you dispel abilities? With all the other Shield abilities, the only "hole" in my defenses will be magic, but if I won't really need it, then I won't really need it.

As for places to go, the way I found it easiest was to do Elves first, since the stuff you fight there other than the Revenants with groups for the Juggernaut armor are relatively easy, and they didn't have very many tricks, just tank and spank, as it were.
After that I did the Circle, which was awesome although imo considerably more difficult because of the number of things that smash my mage's face in if I don't have Force Field up. However, the circle is awesome because of all the free stat boosts you get(I got mostly Magic/Willpower, but I assume other classes get a higher number of appropriate stats) as well as the only 2 constitution I have above my base level, plenty of exp, and the shapeshifting mazes I though were probably one of the more fun parts of the game so far.
Then I did Redcliffe, which was cake with mage Aoe(careful though, even if friendly fire isn't active, it still looks like it kills friendly npcs in combat).
Then...Orzammar. I'd tried that before elves, after elves and after some quests before I hit circle, and I have to say in my experience that place is rough. After doing everything else I came back and it wasn't so bad by then with the tons of spells and Shale having Flawless crystals as wep and armor(Good luck with doing the last proving on Harrowmont's side if you choose those two warriors to join you instead of your party. I got fucked the hell up twice and said screw it)
Currently on the Landsmeet bit, got kinda bored for a while but I think I'll start up another rogue and see how that goes until I want to finish up the mage.

I plan on getting Shale first. Nothing wrong with having a giant rock in your party. As for romances, I think I'll be trying to get Morrigan on this game, and try getting with Leliana on my next game as a female. Grrrowl.

There is a 'respec' mod thats interesting. I may look into it for future playthroughs when trying other builds. http://social.bioware.com/project/469/
also at the end of Orzammar as you
exit the assembly after making Harrowmount king, the crier can be heard saying that the other dwarfs attempt at killing everyone was an 'EPIC FAIL'. I found this amusing.
When in doubt: It was sarcasm.

I hate Morrigan. If I knew her in real life, I'd punch her in the face.

I find her spunky attitude and overall look extremely attractive. I know she's pixels and I'll never get to "stick it", but for what's it worth. She's sexy.

I'm generally a fan of sarcasm, so I don't mind Alistair and Morrigan. Sadly, I'll be ditching Alistair pretty much as soon as I can. Won't need two Templar in the same party, I don't think.
