I've got the Xbox version too. Things are starting to come together now story-wise. I can definately see where the criticism comes from as far it being repetitve though, the game essientially boils down to battles > cut scene > battles > cut scene.

... have you not played an RPG before?
Some areas of the game have to many encounters, definitely.

... Most RPG's have exploring elements, side quests, towns ect.
Even though to be honest side quests and going through towns are my least favourite aspects of RPG's. But idk, just feel like the game would benefit from some variation in gameplay.

Once you hit Chapter 11, the whole thing opens up. Tons of missions you can run around to complete and things you can search for.
Up to that point, yeah, it's pretty linear. I can understand that some people might see that as a con, but I definitely do not.

That was my problem.Chapter 11...sounds pretty far to be getting into the less directed parts of the game. I couldn't bring myself to keep playing after the first two hours.
I suppose I should elaborate somewhat, but the "story" up to that point was all tl;dr

Yeah, if you're not into the story, you're not going to like the game. At all.
That said, simply skipping over cutscenes and not taking five minutes to scan through the datalog is not really playing the game.
EDIT: No, I have no idea whether or not Tallow did those things. That's not my point. Shortcut a game and you won't get much out of it.

The story so far is great. I'm up to Chapter 3-ish, where Snow is briefly away from the group.

Double post.
I'm mid-way through Chapter 4. I really hate playing as Sazh. I mean, I had Lightning and Vanille in my party and they still made me play as him. Grrr.

I can't figure out which are the best weapons for each character. Usually I would just equip each character with the weapon that had the strongest strength/magic, but the ones with status perks seem to have a lot more value. The whole upgrading thing is confusing aswell.

I had to use a guide to fully figure out some things when it came to weapons, like what exactly 'stagger lock' means and what the final weapon stats are. For Lightning I chose her default weapon, Hope I went Hawkeye for magic damage, Snow I took the pure strength weapon, Vanille I took the +debuffs weapon, and for Fang and Sazh I took the stagger lock weapons for bonus damage. Haven't bothered levelling the accessories much since all my components are all going to weapons.

Really, you should check the chart to try and figure out which weapons you want to upgrade and then stick with those ones, since each Tier 2 weapon gives different stats/abilities to the ultimate weapons.
For my main party of Vanille, Lightning, and Sazh, I upgraded the Belladona Wand, Blazing Saber, and Vega 42s, respectively. I went with those because I wanted Vanille to have Improved Debuffing, Sazh to have relatively balanced stats (probably should have gone with Augment Maintenance, but oh well), and I still don't have Lightning's Lionheart (from what I've read, Quick Stagger is ridiculously useful for some of the later Cie'th stone missions).

So far, and it's still an early point in the game where I'm at, I'm using Gladius for Lightning. Can't recall Sazh's, Vanille's, or Hope's weapons at this point.
In other news, Lightning is frickin' awesome, and Hope is smart. Sazh can suck it. I feel sorry for Vanille and her having a soft spot for the old guy. Oh, and Fang's first appearance was kind of awesome, actually.

I'd suggest going with a balanced weapon for Lightning. You'll want her in a Ravager paradigm to really make the most of her abilities, and she really makes the most out of both her Attack and Magic stats as a Ravager. That is, of course, if you plan on keeping her in your party.

Was supposed to have gone out with a couple friends, but that fell through. Fortunately, I was able to finish the game tonight. I think I came out ahead in that exchange.
Amusingly, you can't store more than 999,999 CP for a character. I was really hoping to break a million, but no such luck.
Has anyone who's beaten the game found a good way to earn gil? I'm at about 1.3 million and have nothing left to sell.

Right now, Kaden, I've got Gladius Lvl 2 for Lightning, and Airwing Lvl 2 for Hope.
Though, Lightning's Eidolon Battle is tough. He's the type of guy who likes Ravager skills, looks like, so I might have to take you up on the Blazefire Saber thing, Kaden.
EDIT: Hope fails as a medic.

Right now I've got Lightening equipped with Axis Blade (I had been upgrading the Gladius but switched because I imagine quicker stagger would be quite useful), Fang Bladed Lance, Hope Airwing, Snow Power Circle, Sazh Procylons, and Vanille Healers staff.
I don't want to waste materials upgrading weapons that don't hold up well later on in the game, so I'm not sure if I should stop upgrading for a while until I get some more weapons.

Just started disc two, where you lead as Hope; haven't gotten too far into it yet, so no comments as of yet. The Sazh/Vanille pairing got better as I went along, but overall I just get annoyed whenever I have to lead as him. Though Vanille is twice as good a healer as Hope is.
Oh, and Lightning's Eidolon is beast.

So, Hope is a lot better as the party leader than he is in the party. Like, for real. And Lightning is almost as good a Medic as Vanille.

Basically, all the weapons hold their own. There aren't really any that turn out to be a waste of materials, in terms of stats. And yeah, Juno, Hope is a total badass at that point in the game.
Lightning's Eidolon is incredibly... meh. It's actually really irritating. The only reason I'm leading with her instead of Vanille is because she has a cool Ravager skill (you get it towards the end, and the computer intentionally won't use it on its own).
