The Black Hole
#1
People most likely know what this if (probably by some other name), but basically the Black Hole is a part of the board where the rest of the rules (set by the administrative team, not the server host) are null and void. Basically, everything allowed except for explicit image material as dictated by the server host. I guess that's what the Kame House used to be (just with pr0n), but now that's it's for serious discussion, it just seems tame.

As an addendum, I know some people are not of tough skin and suggest that personal attacks are not allowed unless the person has posted in the black hole as a sort of "come at me bro/sis". I've been to a few boards like these in the past and it used to be a lot of fun.

I'd love that, but it wouldn't exactly perpetuate an image we'd want to have with the newbs. We don't need to be sunshine and roses, but black hole is maybe too much.

AND, we simply can't have a no rules section of the board. There fundamentally must be SOME rules, as a reflection of the server rules.

I actually once considered a board called "The Fire" (If you can't handle the heat, stay out of The Fire). It was essentially a board where people could vent and rage and the rules were highly relaxed. It was ultimately decided that it was not conducive to the environment we wish to support here at Chubbs and simply saying "Don't let this shit flow into other threads or affect your other posts" didn't mean that was going to happen. We still have issues with people getting pissed off at someone in one thread (or not getting the response they want) and straight creating a new thread or hijacking an existing similar one and going at it all over again.

Also, there need not be anymore unrestrained animosity than there already is. I mean, debates get heated enough without a board where you can go and call somebody that disagrees with you a fucktard.

That's sort of the point. A debate with participants burning inside to say something tends to let their statements be colored by their current state of mind. This board tends to help release some of that pent up anger as long as you don't take it too personally (hence the "no attack anything outside the hole" rule). It could (in theory!) make debates cleaner.

Unlikely to happen. Ask again after we change hosts and you might get a different answer.

So host changing is indeed gonna happen? Any timeline?

I hope that'll happen lol, but I think it's more likely it's just gonna make people rage more, IMO.

Not-a-definitive-answer: This isn't the sort of thing we'd keep under-wraps, really. It's a bit up in the air at the moment. When we find out, you'll prob find out.

Unless an Admin contradicks me.

We're actively looking for a new host, and I will let everyone know once we have something definite.

How would raging at someone and attacking them be a good debate? It's better to be civil when trying to get your point across, and I honestly think these forums could stand to enforce that more. You don't need to personally attack someone to debate about a certain topic, considering most of the time they themselves are not even involved with said topic. No one is going to take you seriously if you just say "This is my opinion, and you're a retard if you think otherwise. Also, you are wrong because you're dumb and I dislike you". That's a horrible basis for a debate, vent your rage somewhere else other than Chubbs members, please.

Leo is talking about a forum and thread separate from the main debate topic dedicated to venting rage caused from what you view as someones stupidity. In his theory it would allow someone to say: "You're a complete fucking moron and here's why...." and not get in trouble for it. On paper with proper regulation it's decent, but as Ashe said in practice there is no guarantee it won't bleed over into the rest of the site. So to your initial question; he isn't suggesting we plague the debate with flaming.

And I'm saying how having a separate place for that isn't a good idea, because of my above post.

I dunno man, I don't think this site will stay healthy if we attack one another in any way. We're proud people.

Then it's probably time we get humbled.

Your above post was written in regards to debates becoming uncivil within the debate thread itself, unless I am reading it incorrectly. In a perfect world we could have perfectly civilized debates without getting heated. But this isn't a perfect world and people have tempers and seek to defend their own opinions. You are guilty of this just as much as me and everyone else on this site. Now, from my understanding, you saying that we should be able to keep the debates in of themselves civil. What Leo is proposing seeks to do just that. Right now our tempers and such are flaring up within the debating threads, if there was a forum, say this 'black hole', then people could filter out their anger and their tempers within that thread, and the debate thread itself would remain civil, in theory.

Yes, it'd be great to have perfectly civil debates all the time. But that doesn't happen. Leo is arguing that by filtering out the tempers and the anger and putting that into a different thread, then the actual debate thread can remain civil. I think.

And I'm saying we don't need that shit here. You can rage at each other on your own time. In case you have forgotten, this is a forum for roleplaying DBZ (or it was, until you guys have kind of turned into your own universe kind of from my understanding). Now, think of people coming here to roleplay, and they see the off topic forums as this giant black of hole of people constantly attacking their opinions and raging at them for whatever reason. Do you really think they're going to want to stick around?

This forum isn't for attacking each other and debating, and you should feel lucky that the moderators and admins have even provided you with a place to debate at all, as this really isn't the place for that kind of thing. In fact, I'm sure the only reason they have is because they were tired of people derailing other threads because of trivial debates. The least you can do is keep this forum civil so that maybe more people will join in order to fulfill it's primary role, to roleplay.

It is supposed to be a closed forum part (or at least secluded), probably with a written disclaimer. It's not like they're drafted into reading it.

Think of it as a prison and everything against the rules of the rest of the board = prisoners (except for the global rules, e.g. no porn).

A forum like the one Leo is talking about could be hidden from guests/new members/those who do not have permission to see it. I'd almost welcome restricting who has access to it.

You should check those rules again then.

Quote:Be respectful. We don’t expect everybody to be best friends, but we do expect that people act civilly towards each and every member, including staff. This means no insults, slurs, flames, pointless arguing, or any other bull like that. If you cannot get along with somebody, simply ignore or block them. It’s not that difficult. Even better: try to talk it out like adults and come to a mutual understanding or agreement. This goes double for people who decide to gang up on a single member and just keep picking on them.

Quote:No flaming or flame-baiting. Flaming essentially boils down to insulting somebody or making a personal attack against them. Whether you do this intelligently or straight up call them names or swear at them, flaming is flaming, and it’s an offense that will get you an Infraction real quick. Flame-baiting is equally guilty. Baiting someone is deliberately and purposefully provoking them into attacking you to and then turning around and crying foul.
