Post here! I'll throw up my list of people, abilities, quirks, and alignments in a few.

-Kole-Mario Mario

Townie

Ability: Mushroom
-If an ability, lynch vote, or Mafia execution would result in your death, you instead become small Mario. At this time, your identity will become known, but not your allegiance. One time use ability.

Quirk: Italian
-You have to quote an Italian actor/character in every post you make. Try to be descrete about it.

Should be pretty obvious why I picked his ability and quirk.

-Tyr-Luigi Mario

Mafia

Ability: Green-Stache
-If targetted by an investigative ability, you kill the user.

Quirk: Copycat
-You must quote some portion of the previous post every time you post.

Luigi's ability was based on Luigi's Mansion, since the only investigator was Boo. His quirk is based on him being basically a copy of Mario.

-King B-Boo

Townie

Ability: Haunt
-You may haunt a target of your choice. The first night you haunt someone, you learn their character name. On the second night, you also learn their allegiance. Only usable during Night Phase.

Quirk: Shy
-You cannot reply to any statement with you name in it. When refering to others, you cannot use their names either.

Boo could haunt people, gathering information. Because he's a ghost. I probably should have made it a bit more powerful, but considering how the game turned out, I suppose it was good I didn't. His quirk is a classic Boo thing where if you look at a Boo, it disappears.

-Kaden-Princess Peach

Townie

Ability: Royalty
-Once in the entire game, you have the ability to lynch a person of your choice instead of the choice of the group. Day phase only.

Quirk: Haughty
-You're better than these peasants and you know it. Make sure they know it too.

Peach had one of the most powerful abilities in the game. Which is why I made it a one-time use only.

-John Doe-Bowser

Townie

Ability: Kidnap
-You are able to kidnap a person of your choice, once a Night. Said kidnapped person is protected from execution or any ability that would remove them from the game. You remain anonymous during this protection. Night phase only.

Quirk: Clown-Copter
-Put a happy face in every post.

I made Bowser the Doctor mainly because I couldn't think of another good power for him. Still, kidnapping does, in effect, protect a person from outside forces, so it made sense. Also, happy face. Hehehe!

-Sophia-Bullet Bill

Townie

Ability: Fucking Bullet
-You may target a player for execution during the Night Phase. Night phase only.

Quirk: B words
Use words that start with b as often as possible while posting. If you can't do that, use words that at least contain the letter B.

Your standard vigilante, based on Bullet Bill being a bullet. I probably gave Bill the shittiest quirk in the game. Sorry, Sophia. Next time I'll try to think of something... easier.

-Dehan-Koopa Troopa

Mafia

Ability: Koopa Got a Star
-For an entire phase, either night or day, you are immune to any ability to remove yourself from the game. You must specify when to use this ability. One time use only.

Quirk: Slow
-You have to be extremely long-winded in anything you post. The longer the better.

Koopa's ability was based on a Dorkly Video of Koopa getting a star and threatening Mario. While powerful, it's one time use and having to say you want to use it before hand limited it pretty well. And, turtles are slow.

-Alexander-Bob Bomb

Townie

Ability: Explosion
-If you're targetted by the Mafia for execution, or another player's ability to kill, both of you are removed from the game instead of just yourself. Provides no protection to the lynch vote.

Quirk: Angry Little Fucker
-You're angry. What about doesn't matter. Real world or game, you have to be pissed in every post.

Bob Bombs blow up when you attack them. Thus, the ability. It could have hurt the town had Bill targetted him, as it was it helped the town, though at the cost of a townsperson. And, I think bombs are pretty volitile and angry.

-Ashe-Toad

Townie

Ability: Androgynous
- Your vote counts for two. Because you're crossdressing. Weirdo.

Quirk: In Another Castle
-Constantly reference another post to come every time you post something.

In a town full of Toads, it's not too big a stretch to think one could vote multiple times without being caught. And Toads always say to look in another castle for stuff.

Some questions for ya'll.

1) Were the phases too long or too short?

2) How was the balance in the game?

3) Any powers I should leave out or adjust in future games?

4) Was it any fun?

5) Should I have gone into more detail with my OPs?

1) Night phases definitely felt too long. With the majority of us just waiting around for two days, it felt like it just dragged on.
2) It definitely felt pretty balanced.
3) Boo's might need to be a bit more powerful. His info was pretty much useless.
4) It was totally fun.
5) I liked the OPs. Good reads.

I will say, I totally called Dehan very early. Fuck you guys for not listening to me.

Like people have already said, Night Phases felt too long. Day phases felt good.

2) How was the balance in the game?


I don't think the game was actually well balanced if everyone had been active. We got super lucky with Trafford killing Luigi. Not only does our sheriff have to investigate someone twice to get any useful information, but one of the two mafia members would have just killed him outright. Dehan's ability was also pretty insane. If he had actually been here, I think he could have easily won the game with that power.

The town's powers were, ultimately, too random. Their information gathering was pretty poor and without that, the other abilities can really just be used randomly (Soph actually told me that's exactly what he did just so he used it before dying). While that can often be the case anyway, it should be more an option than requirement.

3) Any powers I should leave out or adjust in future games?


I don't think a mafia member should have a "investigate me and die" power. Something like "I show up as a townsperson" is cool, but they already get to kill one person per turn. Giving them more than that (even if it's only the potential for more) can be really game-breaking.

The only other thing I would say is that I don't think it's necessary to give everyone a posting quirk. Some people like them and enjoy playing with them (I do, traditionally, and this time it was an awesome quirk), but some people also just abhor it. Ultimately, I would rather miss out on the extra enjoyment from a quirk than have people insta-quit the game because they read their PM and didn't like their quirk. I'm not saying never use them, I'm saying don't force it.

4) Was it any fun?


Definitely. Like I said, I greatly enjoyed my quirk (I play it well, I think) and even going into the last day phase I could have seen virtually anyone being mafia. Unfortunate it ended the way it did, but que sera sera.

5) Should I have gone into more detail with my OPs?

No. I think you put in just the right amount of flavor. Too much and people read into shit that they shouldn't, but the game wouldn't have had the same feel without it.

Feedback is looking good so far. I'm definitely going to be using it in the next game I run.

By the way, if you hadn't noticed, some of the more iconic Mario characters weren't here. Like, Yoshi and Wario and such. I decided to stick with characters in the first Super Mario game, and as I continue hosting, I'll move on to Super Mario Bros. 2, 3, World, etc.

I've definitely learned that quirks are about as 50/50 extremes. As fun as they tend to be in some games, I've had people literally quit over not wanting to post a picture of a pastry item (as an example) and told me over mumble that was specifically the reason they found it no longer fun. There's no real rhyme or reason or middle ground. You either get a group who doesn't mind joking around and having some fun with it, or you get a group that just finds what they view as "a limitation to their posts" as unbearably frustrating. So keep that in mind when you try to find ways to encourage their use without it being something potentially game breaking for them.

I'm thinking I may make them optional things in the next game. As in, you wanna do it, go for it. If not, meh.

At the same time, I'm hoping for more players, and more activity in the next game as well.

I regret not being more creative with the smiley faces. :\

I found the quirks very enjoyable and interesting, as well as relatively easy. I've made some pretty terrible quirks (such as not being able to use the letter "E" or forcing you to change your lynch vote every post or making each post have to rhyme), which I'm sure made people angry, so I did my job.

I agree with Kaden on most points. Night phases were too long, though making day phases last 2 days was a good idea. I definitely agree with not giving the mafia an extra kill power, even if it was a slim chance of activating (I've argued about giving "Granny with Shotgun" to the mafia already, I don't think I need to repeat that). With so few people in the game, the sheriff was too weak to be of any use in the amount of time the game would have lasted. If there were twice as many people, it would be acceptable to have a slow acting sheriff or two in game.

I used my power to kidnap on Dehan because it was his first time playing and I didn't want him to get bullshit out of a game so quickly. I assumed that I couldn't kidnap myself, or else I would have.

I want to see a Game of Thrones based Mafia. Its thematically great and there are some interesting abilities I could see used for certain characters.
