You are a nameless gem-making wizard in exile who wants a taboo artifact. The game begins when you discover the location of the artifact, and immediately embark upon a quest for it. The game itself is fairly straight forward: waves of monsters attack you, and you must defeat them to move on.
Gemcrafting is the best part, which is where the title comes from. iirc, there are eight types of color-coded gems, each with a different effect. Red gems deal splash damage, blues will slow the target, greens are poisonous, orange replenishes your mana pool with every attack. Combining like-type gems will make a better "pure" stone while two or more different types will create a less potent multi effect stone. Either way, you have to combine two equal-tier gems to get a better one. The higher tiered gems get pretty expensive to make, so there are times when it's better to have a handful of moderately powerful gems rather than a single super gem.
(tier 2 + tier 2 = tier 3, but tier 2 + tier 1 = tier 2)
There is more, like using a gem as a bomb and dropping it directly on the monsters, anti-tower wards and monster-healing wards, and skills that you can improve as you gain experience levels. The game has a link to a decent strategy guide for more details.
