This round of Conquest is based on the ill fated Naruto-themed RPG, Ninjaworld. I didn't want to clutter the game with background stories for each team, so I'll just make a thread here.

At the close of the manga's central plot arc, the entire known world is healing its wounds that were inflicted during the Fourth Secret War. The strongest villages were the ones who suffered the worst and because of that the balance of power between regions has fallen into chaos. Relatively smaller villages, having escaped direct conflict, are growing their influence while the larger villages are forced to withdraw.

Konohagakure, which was the strongest village before the war, suffered the worst. The village had been completely obliterated. Although many of the Leaf shinobi survived, there was much work to be done and their power withered up dramatically. They were able to draft a strong treaty with the Sand of Sunagakure, their closest ally, but the other ninja villages and nations were either aggressively expanding into Konoha's former sphere of influence or too busy with their own affairs to commit their forces in future conflicts.

In the wake of the death of the Mizukage of Kirigakure, Suigetsu - now permanently fused with the soul of the Sanbi water demon - took over the faltering shinobi village of Water Country by force. Although many despised him, none had the power to resist. One night, there was a mass exodus of Mist ninja, many of which fled to Port City in Wave Country which had lacked the presence of a ninja village of its own. This was viewed as a potential hostile action against nearby Konoha in Fire Country, who was allied with Port City, and Haruno Sakura was sent to take control of the situation along with a large number of Leaf shinobi.

After that, the rulers of Wind Nation - who had long been at odds with their shinobi village Sunagakure - betrayed the Sand ninja. Having reacquired the Ichibi sand demon, and along with the aid of another foreign shinobi village, they laid siege to Suna. The Sand could not withstand the siege and the Kazekage, Gaara of the Desert, remained behind to buy time for the rest of the village to flee. A call for aid went out to Konoha, but only one shinobi answered the call: Naruto. He was in a tight conflict with Sasuke over leadership of Konoha, and he took this opportunity to prove himself more capable of the role. However, by the time Naruto got there the battle had been long since over, and he could only lead the refugee shinobi back to Konoha.

Meanwhile, the Uchiwa had resurfaced in Fire Country - a lesser branch clan of the Uchiha, who had defected from the Uchiha more than a century ago when Madara killed his own brother. They were the descendants of Madara's brother, and when Sasuke had defeated Madara at the close of the War they had decided to pledge themselves to his service. Once Naruto had left the village, they came out. Although they were only a fraction of the strength of the original Uchiha clan they immediately proved themselves superior to all others in Konoha. Sasuke used them to enforce his own control over the village, while he himself went and slayed the rulers of Fire Country under the pretense of preventing them from betraying the village as what was happening in Wind Country. By the time Naruto returned and discovered what had happened Sasuke was in complete control of the country as well as the village.

Sasuke, now having recovered much of the village's military power in the Uchiwa, turned the Sand shinobi away, seeing them as a threat to his base of power. Naruto went with them, returning back west to River Country and establishing there a village for the Sand shinobi. He did this with the intention of only ensuring them a place of their own, but with the happenings in Fire Country the Sands did not believe that Naruto would be safe in his own home again, and convinced him to stay and be their leader.

And that is how the Broken Leaf, Broken Mist, and Broken Sand villages came to be as they are now. But, that is not where the story ends. A tentative cease-fire was signed between these villages, which held for a short while. But, with the chaos of the previous War mounting the stability of these fledgling villages began to falter. Eventually, without the proper strength to maintain their unity, the villages broke down to clan sovereignty as the clans dealt with their own issues individually.

The villages were instead a superficial construct of key alliances held between groups of clans that lived in the same general region, and inter-clan conflicts were dealt not with a superior ruling body but directly by the clans themselves. Village symbols were replaced with the insignia of the predominant clan, and was subject to change.

Additionally, since the individual clans had much greater authority over their own actions, the old treaties quickly became irrelevant, and many clans stationed in satellite regions around opposing dominant clans fought with one another for greater local influence. As the larger clans came to the aid of their lesser the conflicts quickly escalated, until the Broken Leaf, Broken Mist, and Broken Sand were at open war with one another and the next Secret War loomed on the horizon...
