I play a little bit, I've not gotten terribly far into the game, but it's pretty fun. 18 is the one who knows the most about ffxi.

I love it, though I've taken a break and haven't played hardcore for a month or two. It is very addicting if you can get past level 30.
My jobs are as follows:
White Mage 75
Summoner 54
Blackmage 42
Redmage 37
Thief 31
Ninja 23
Dragoon 19
The rest are 9 to 11
I have over 50 mil in gear and items, also a second account that is a 74 Bard.
I have been playing for 2 years on the 23rd, and I'm in a LinkShell that kills Gods and big badass dragons and monsters for kick ass items.
I have completed Chains of Promthia (which fucking rocks because I have access to Sea, which is a really beautiful high level area). I'm close to completing the Zilart missions.
When ToA comes out I'll definetly play more, they're releasing Blue Mage and a Gambler class, it looks like a pirate o_o.
Oh, and I play a Mithra.
I suggest to you, if you want an easy start, do NOT start as a Taru mage, hardest combo. You might find a Galka monk to be fun and powerful. The worst place is Valkrum dunes, as Rad will be able to agree with, I think he stopped playing around that point =P. Thief is really hard up to level 15.
You'll be able to solo any job to 10, or even a little higher with no problems (beastermaster can go to 75 solo). Around 10 or so you'll want to party with people, though you can solo, it is time consuming.
It'll be good to give advice once you know what race and job you want to be.

Oh, 18 forgot to mention, there's a little-known mini-game that comes with FFXI. Its called FF-Update.

Be prepared for one hell of an update session once you get FFXI installed. My suggestion would be to do it before you go to bed.

I went from PS2 to PC and can not go back. Graphics are beautiful on the PC.
Frieza, each additional character is 1 doller US just so you know. You can't be a dragoon or a summoner until your main job gets to 30. You can be:
Redmage
Whitemage
Blackmage
Warrior
Monk
Thief
So if you want to be a dragoon I suggest taking warrior to 37 (cap for you're subjob) then you can level dragoon to 75. Then I suggest you level whitemage to 37 so you can level summoner to 75.

Good choice, elvaan make good warriors and ninja's, their MP pool sucks for mage-type classes though.

You can not be anything similar in looks to him.

Asura sucks, it's econmy was 2x Kujata's, so my ex restarted on my server. I wonder how it is now xD. Prices have been high and low these days. I bought the ingedients for a Vermillion Cloak, 14mil, take a break for a few weeks and find out the damn thing is 9 mil now. >=[

I got a level 9 or 10 warrior, havent played in a month or 2, but I still got the account.

Uh...no, the only way you use other job skills is by subbing the job, BUT that subbed job is half of your level. So if you were a darknight/dragoon you'd be like this:
10DRK/5DRG
30DRK/15DRG
Highest you can have your sub at is 37.
DRK75/37DRG
But some abilities can't be used subbed, like 2 hour abilities. Also, you'll probably not bet invites with a strange combo like that. Dark usually subs warrior, dragoon usually subs a combonation of things, from whitemage to ninja.

You'd only take monk to 18 and then sub darknight with war, you need monk at 18 to take warrior to 37 then sub it to darknight.
Good subjobs for dark knight are thf and war.
