Hurricane Katrina - Sammah - 09-03-2005

Just received rumor that soon we (Marines) are going to get sent to the site and help recover and repair. I hope this is true, just like we did when the Tsunami destroyed Indonesia / Sri Lanka. I'm hopeing this time i'll be able to go and help out too.

Let's just focus on what we can do to help, even if there's nothing we can do from where we are, praying in my eyes is better than doing nothing at all.

Hurricane Katrina - Reijin - 09-03-2005

I'm not saying these people deserve it, but what I AM saying is that they had already been offered help PREEMPTIVELY. Everyone's trying to help them now, and they are shooting at people and telling them to go away and mind their business, and when people tried to help them evacuate before, they refused. Noone deserves this type of thing, but its been proven many times that you cannot force someone to accept help, even at the cost of their life. That situation there disgusts me. These people refused to leave, for whatever reasons (and I of course hold the exception for any who had a good reason, but we've learned from past disasters that most stay from sheer stubborness) and now that half of them are dead, the other half want to act like we are post-nuclear now.

I also don't really expect us to recieve help from other countries regarding this situation. Or not many. Despite our involvement with the tsunami. We've aquired too many enemies.

I'll be damned.

"Cuban President
Fidel Castro, calling a "truce" in Havana's ideological enmity with Washington, offered to fly 1,100 doctors to Houston with 26 tons of medicine to treat people in the disaster area.

Castro's leftist ally, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez offered to send cheap fuel but the State Department said a decision had not been made on whether to accept this offer."

Well, that's one thing I never thought I'd see. Especially as many people as Bush has bombed. I had thought Castro would somehow be blamed as a terrorist with a machine able to create Hurricanes and that we would be attacking Cuba by the end of the week.

EDIT:

This might also allow us to finally concentrate on our country instead of jumping into wars with everyone else. We need the help HERE now. I also would have allowed to dog onto the bus, but I wouldn't have let people carry an entire vet with them. It would be circumstantial. And in the timespan they had to rush things, there wasn't any time to go "Hey, is anyone allergic to the dog?" People were panicking and freaking out, and there simply wasn't time for it. So I probably would have let the kid take the dog, despite the chance of not having good reason for it.

One can only hope.

Hurricane Katrina - Vegeta - 09-03-2005

A huge portion of the people left behind had no way to get out. There's plenty of people without cars and people who couldn't get out.

They should've one, fixed the levy system 5 years ago when it was said that in the event of something like this the city would be fucked and two, forced everyone out. Supplied buses out of town... 2 days before it hit.

Hurricane Katrina - Reijin - 09-03-2005

Some people may not have had transportation, but I saw quite a few vans with trees fallen into them as well.

Hurricane Katrina - Bra - 09-03-2005

Wow. With countries like Cuba and Venezuela stepping up to the plate, US foreign relations could change forever. Maybe Castro's trying to make amends in order to lift the embargo.

It's great to see so many world powers offering to lend a hand; it's finally a positive spin on my view of the world situation.

I actually know somebody who's going to head down there as part of a Red Cross 'mission', so if he manages to connect every now and then (unlikely) I'll be sure to relay his updates here.

I agree 120% with that right there. I know we knew this Hurricane was devastating quite a few days prior to it ripping up New Orleans, they could have easily taken like, even the damned School buses or something and picked up as many people as possible throughout the city up to like, the next state or somewhere safe. We could've done more to prevent the amount of death that occured, theres no doubt. But as for the destruction, that was inevitable.

So the National Guard is being sent over there to help things out, hopefully they can settle down the riots and stuff. If not, then the real military steps in.

Hurricane Katrina - Hellfighter 17 - 09-04-2005

OMFG! That must mean that they are teh humans, huh?!

I think that they should have left. But, just remember, they have to choose what to keep then, for most of these people their whole lives--excluding family and friends--are there. Also, would you like to believe that probably the biggest disaster is coming for you?

Those who didn't leave beforehand should've, but something like that seems incomprehensible to me. Also, maybe they thought things were being hyped up, 'cause USA doe shave like a hundred tornadoes a year, right? I know it's a hurricane, but y'know.

Hurricane Katrina - Raditzu - 09-04-2005

Maybe a bunch of people just flat-out didn't know about it. Sounds impossible after the fact, but its not really that far fetched. There any number of reasons for people to not leave, so arguing it is kind of pointless.

Did anyone else see the clip of Mike Meyers and Kanaye West (sp?)? Freaking brilliant. I'm so glad we have people like that speaking to the American public.

Hurricane Katrina - Vegeta - 09-04-2005

All the "should've" and "could've" doesn't save any lives now.

People need to shut the hell up and go help. Argue later, rescue people right now while they're still in need.

I'd like to think that in the event of a huge disaster the citizens of my country would offer some aid. I know Vegeta would but some of you guys... Sad

Here, here. He said that with less swearing than I probably would have right now.

Man...the Air Force is so unloved. I helped in the Tsunami in Asia! I don't know if they are going to send us from little ol' Iowa, but if they do, I'm going! I love helping them out, gives me some sort of satisfaction for being in the military.

Hurricane Katrina - Kami - 09-04-2005

The Tsunami is Asia was devistating, but all the ignorant jackass Americans didn't care as much because it hadn't been one of their own cities/countires that had been wiped out. I'm really disgusted with the way people have been behaving in the wake of this disaster. Placing blame on specific people is crap...the entire government failed on this one. We don't need people running around saying "George Bush doesn't care about black people." We don't need people saying, "They had it coming." Ok, New Oreleans is under so many feet of water, bodies are floating around in polluted water, it's like a goddamn bomb went off down in New Oreleans. I know there are people who were concerned and activly helping with the Tsunami victims...and now we have hurricane victims to help. Hopefully they send the Air Force down there to help with the Coast Guard moving people in choppers. Go to the Red Cross web site and donate some money. I gave ten bucks, I admit it isn't much but it's better than sitting around pontificating about who is at fault.

I have no idea what it means, but it sounds sexy.

I agree with my little green companion here. Everyone that's doing something are doing their best to do ANYTHING. I know three people that lived down there in Biloxi, Mississippi. In fact, Keesler AFB is where I went to Technical training. Not far from there is Gulfport's NCTC training for Army, Navy, and Air Force.

I believe that Bush is doing what is needed, he's my boss(however that doesn't entitle me to be on his side). However, the more military we get down there the better. The Coast Guard can only pick up four, five at max, people in about 5 minutes, not including getting them to safety and coming back for more, they are however working around the clock. I'm very proud of our Military and those that are helping, for everyone else complaining and running their mouths instead of their money can kiss my ass really.

Seeing such destruction on TV is one thing, I've seen it first hand and it's not pretty, so support us in what we are doing, don't beat us for what we can't.
