Err...Too much free time? - Hellfighter 17 - 11-22-2005 Quote:Originally posted by KrillinOr there could be a class that would teach people about religion. Let's call it. . .theology! Seriously, though; different religions teach different creation myths (I use the term myths because that is how I was taught to call 'em), so science class would have to teach every one of them. A better solution would be theology in high school (it's not in ours here); I'd actually like that, since I plan on taking theology in university. Err...Too much free time? - Super Buu - 11-22-2005 I do Theology at my current college. It's a Roman Catholic college (although you don't have to be religious to attend) and it's a compulsory subject. Although, what we do mainly is just about morals and such, we don't actually learn about Religions. When I took up Religious education a few years back I wanted to learn about different religions, but I was disappointed to learn that it was all about Christianity. That, in my opinion, shouldn't be said to cover all of Religious Education. Theology, to me, is a little boring. It teaches you about things that I think anyone should already know, kind of primary school stuff. For example, we did a lesson on not being judgemental, and for another we meditated... It's alright if you rush through life without stopping for one second to actually think, but personally I spend hours every day contemplating, so none of the stuff is a surprise to me. The one thing everyone should know when it comes to religions is this: You can never know for sure. Out of all the knowledge in the whole universe, we know a tiny little speck. You don't know everything about Earth, or everything about everyone on Earth, so although you can theorise, you can never know for sure how things are. Everything in your knowledge is a guess. We can make educated guesses, but nothing more. In the grand scheme of things, you might be right and you might be wrong, but anything is at least possible. My estimation is atheism. But I still accept entirely that I might be wrong. Err...Too much free time? - Old Dave - 11-22-2005 Screw it all just worship the Buub 8) I give free dental. Err...Too much free time? - Super Buu - 11-22-2005 Do you give free tooth floss? Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-22-2005 I plan to be a Professor of Theology at a Christian University (with, if everything goes well, a Ph.D from Cambridge). Needless to say, the subject excites me. Err...Too much free time? - Old Dave - 11-22-2005 Quote:Originally posted by Krillin No shit? that's good stuff there Krillin good luck with all that. Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-22-2005 First rung has been answered already. I just got accepted to Houghton College. Double major there: Philosophy and Religion (with a minor in Creative Writing). Then, my Masters at Seminary in Religion, and from there, the Ph.D. I'll be a Professor before I hit 28. =D Err...Too much free time? - Old Dave - 11-22-2005 Nice, my own lil book worm.
Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-22-2005 Indeed. "To be a bookworm is to be a devourer and digester of words without really comprehending their content." Gotta love the Anglo-Saxons. Err...Too much free time? - Kami - 11-22-2005 Did someone mention pirates? http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=weekly_sub4 Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-23-2005 Quote:Originally posted by Furiza Indeed. One must keep in mind, though, that the Hebrew Language is incredibly poetic, and even in their prose (such as Genesis), there are cases of poetic devices (such as the hyperbole "Your seed will be as numerous as the grains of sand on the seashore"). We aren't expected to count every grain and find out the number of Israelites, we're just expected to understand that Israel was a BIG nation. Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-23-2005 Quote:Originally posted by Furiza Oh, of course. That just displays an ignorance of the entire purpose of the Bible. I believe salvation occurs exactly as it was outlined by Paul in Romans 10:9-10. "9 That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (Romans 10:9-10 NIV)" How could anyone take that as a metaphor? It's blatant, it's non-negotiable, and it's clean-cut. Period. Quote:I'm not a big fan of the Old Testament, anyway, since the purpose of the New Testament was to take away it's relevance, since it deals with society as we know it "today". I think both Testaments hold strong value. The Old Testament is actually overflowing with references to Christ through Prophecy, most notably in Psalms and Isaiah. The New Testament is simply the culmination. Both are inspired. Both are part of the Holy Canon. Both should be equally regarded as valuable. Though, I must admit, I do enjoy reading the New Testament more. Err...Too much free time? - Old Dave - 11-23-2005 I was under the impression we were to keep religion from the main forums, if you have access to the 18 + Forum take it up there or over aim. EDIT: Unlocked since Furiza and Krillen are mature enough to handle a conversation without breaking into a fight, anything remotely argumentitive appears in this thread it will be locked. Err...Too much free time? - Hellfighter 17 - 11-23-2005 I'll give my not-so-educated opinion about that schtuff. If a person is Christian, then they should follow the set values of Christianity, and if they are something else, then they shoudl follow the set value sof that. If not, then they should be ready for the consequences, as there are always consequences, as much with law (whether you get caught or not). Err...Too much free time? - Krillin - 11-23-2005 It seems stupid that a discussion of Religion should be limited to only those who are eighteen and over. Quote:Thing that annoys me most is people using Bible to push their own personal agenda. In fact, there's nothing that annoys me more. It's one of the reasons I'm growing increasingly impatient with organized religion today, in fact. Indeed. I feel that, instead, people should align their "personal agenda" toward the Bible, instead of interpreting the Bible in light of their preformed biases. As for the Old Testament, a few of my favorites are the History books (I and II Samuel, I and II Kings, I and II Chronicles), the Poetry books (Job, Psalms, and Proverbs, mostly), and Isaiah. However, I hold to II Timothy 3:16-17: "16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work." (II Timothy 3:16-17 NIV) According to this, every part of the Bible is profitable to the Christian walk in one way or another. Even Leviticus (as boring as that book can sometimes be).
