People don't like Dragoon's because they aren't as good as other DD's, and you can only have 6 people in a party.

Cookie cutter party at 41+:

Paladin or Ninja as tank
White Mage
Black Mage
Red Mage
Thief
Any good DD that can SC with Thief

Man at 60+ when they pull out light weapon skills it's so damn hot. Being a DRK will allow you to make light, which people love.

As for Dragoon, you are more than welcome to go against the crowd. I see a few Dragoon's in my LS grinding hard to hit 75, and they have. The only bad part is you'll end up waiting longer for an invite, or you'll have to make your own parties more. I for one hate being a leader, but most dragoon's have to.

Sandy is usually best on Kujata.

There's nothing quite as awesome as running around just outside of town and hitting little birds and bees with an axe the size of your torso.
