Yeah I think it sortof sucks KV got his ass kicked with just one punch. Here is the strongest saiyan (at the time of the flashback) who personally lead the Saiyan's against and concured the Tuffles. Then he faces off against Freeza and is killed with one punch.

Just because he was the basis of those stories doesn't mean he actually fought monsters. He was probably just a real strong guy that people made seem larger than life.
As for training, I could spend 20 years punching a punching bag, but when I box the guy with 5 years of actual ring time I'm going down, most likely.

Watch the battle between Pikkon and Olibu, then watch the once between Yamcha and Olibu. Olibu was obviously only putting in a half-assed effort. Also, how much more powerful are people when they come down from otherworld?

Hmm...
It is suggested that it occurs over a certain period of time. It's just natural to assume that it is yearly, because there is also a World Tournament on Earth.
As well, in the Janemba movie, one of the Kaioshin refers to the tournament as "This Year"s Tournament, implying that it isn't the first time that it happened.

How was Vegeta to fuse with Goku if he wasn't dead? It was purely to fulfill the title, "The Rebirth of Fusion."

No. Its because the movies are based on the series, but the series has no relation to the movies. Which is why you'll never hear Goku reference Broli in the series. Or Koola. Etc.

But when was there ever a purpose to refence to Cooler or Broly? He didn't need to relate Frieza and Cooler, because when Cooler came along, Frieza was already done for good.
EDIT: We drifted way too far from the Olibu topic. Anyhoo, I needsta go. Final Note, though the movies and the series didn't overlap, they obviously weren't completely different series, such as GT. Want an Unaligning series? How about a GT Super Saiyan Gohan who's power level is mildly higher than Mystic Gohan's.

I will still say, however, that Tien is the Strongest full blooded human, only because I don't think Olibu is a full blooded human.
