Early release gives a company easy penetration into the market. This allows them to set standards for prices and availibility. It also sets up barrier of entry for anyone who enters afterwards.

Nintendo has loads of money that they haven't even resorted to. I mean, they make cheap consoles, and make an assload of money on them early. Plus all of the games they make for their systems sell out. Every Mario Party, every game with Mario in its name sells out. It kind of a low way to gain money.

Dude, all of their games don't sell out. I can go into any local electronics store and pick up a copy of pretty much any Wii game I want.

I'm not sure what you mean by "loads of money". But Nintendo would have to flop in both the handheld and the home console markets to be in trouble (read as: never going to happen). They're too well established to run into any real trouble. However, they don't have the nearly 70 billion dollars in assets that both Sony and Microsoft have.

For a company that makes only games and game consoles, they're bank is pretty fat. Before The Wii launched they were at 20 billion (In US currency). So if you add the recent gains in the Wii, they're probably up some deal. Not a lot, compared to Microsoft or Sony, but they have money.

Battle of the consoles - Deo - 06-07-2007

By THAT logic, Gokua, you could easily say the 360 is doing the best because it's making such a huge profit despite almost no sales over seas.

You can't just cut and slice a budget and pick out certain aspects.

In the over all scheme of things, PS3 and 360 could stop producing their consoles for 3 months, start again, and still be ahead of Nintendo in the end.

Battle of the consoles - Aero - 06-07-2007

I said for a company that only sells games and consoles, their bank is fat.

If you sliced away everything Sony and Microsoft sold other than their consoles and the games their company makes, they wouldn't have nearly as much money as Nintendo.

EDIT: Well, Sony probably would, considering that the PS2 sold over 70 million units. >.>

Not entirely. The advantage I see is that it is able to find out what the customers' likes and dislikes and quickly make amends, but as for barriers, that has always been ignored.

360 has enough games to show off what it can do, and it's still failing... which is sad. Halo 3 will make or break the console I believe, but I'm sure it will do fine. I don't think it will win this war though, at least not from what it's been promising. But it's still early, so who knows.

The 360 is by far not failing. =/

How? They are deep enough into the 'good games' phase to be killing the market and they aren't. Not failing, I mean compared to the other two it's lagging behind. Considering what I said about what the PS3 still has coming up.

They still have a lot of great games coming I guess. I mean, Gears was a huge hit and they're making it into a trilogy.

Battle of the consoles - Krillin - 06-07-2007

Sony: Behemoth. Makes solid systems. As has been said, the PS3 will soar as soon as it "hits the pricepoint". Veg's estimates sound damn good to me, and I won't insult anyone's stupidity by quoting them here. Sony is in no trouble whatsoever, I'm certain. Their plan for the PS3 was no doubt a gatling gun effect. Some would argue that the gun hasn't begun spinning as quickly as it should, but that doesn't matter. The point is, it's continuing to spin, and will continue to. Expect the PS3 to be the eventual heavy-hitter in the hardcore market.

Microsoft: An Western company. While I've heard word of more support, most of the games you're going to see here are going to be Western-made. The demographic that this system was made for is Western. The Xbox failed in Japan for many reasons (it's quite possible the biggest reason was that the original Xbox scratched game discs as it was played. Harmless, but this was no doubt seen as shoddy design, and we all know how first impressions can be). The sales of Xbox 360 systems during the jumpstart cemented their position in this console war. Look for Microsoft to attempt to establish more licenses. They need to start now, if they haven't already; if they're going to simply dance port-to-port with PS3, Microsoft will falter in the long run.

Nintendo: Solid. Will continue to be solid, provided they don't inexplicably do something stupid. They've dominated the casual market and will continue to do so for another year or so, until prices on the "hardcore" systems begin to drop. Even then, the Wii will simply be a money-maker. Expect more innovation. Nintendo needs to remain fresh to keep the momentum going. Also expect more ways to connect your handheld to your Wii, which no one will care about in the long run.

The best image I can think of is this: Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft are all in control of three countries on a single piece of land. They each inhabit distinct portions of that land. Some of the land is constantly in question as to where borders lay, but no one is currently making any huge ventures in any direction other than solidifying their own current border.

That analogy sucked. Oh well, it kinda works.

Battle of the consoles - Bojack - 06-07-2007

I have to disagree with this price point thing people are saying about Sony. There isn't a PS3 game out that I would want to buy the system for. If the system drops a hundred or so dollars, that won't change. They need good games first, and if both happen in a close enough time frame (the price cut and the good games), then the PS3 sales will soar. If the good games come out before the price cut and the reviews/word of mouth get around enough, the sales will go up. If it drops from 600 to 500 and the games are still shit, nobody will buy it. 500 is still a lot of money to fork over, and if the games aren't worth it people won't get it.

I'm just assuming the games right now aren't that great, at least not good enough to warrant 600 dollars of peoples' money. I'm sure a lot of people would find the PS3 more appealing and affordable when MGS(or any other great game) comes out, no matter what it costs. Whereas, when your only choices are dirt biking and sub-par shoot em up, that price tag looks a lot more menacing.

EDIT: And now Sam is here. I don't want to go because I know when I come back later/tomorrow this will be fucking 862539626 pages long. D= And I'll be damned if I do anything more than skim over the last page.

*tip toe tip toe tip toe. Open squeaky door slowly* My leaving shouldn't interrupt. Please continue.

Battle of the consoles - Krillin - 06-07-2007

This thread isn't about whether or not you like the games on a specific system. It's whether or not that system is doing well (at least, that's what most of us are talking about). Simply put, quite a few people seem to disagree with you.

Battle of the consoles - Captain Silver - 06-07-2007

Yeah, the Playstation one and two were great hits virtually everywhere and probably the most hyped of the three, which could be partly the reason that they MAY win the console war. The games are always normally pretty solid, in both game play and graphics.

But things were different when the Xbox and PS2 were around. I mean, let?s face it, the Xbox had a few decent titles and that?s about all it had; only memorable titles are Halo if I?m to be honest. But now Microsoft has stepped their game up and are pumping out great titles (Gears), sure some are short lived greats if you will (Crackdown among with a few others).

They will be sharing great titles like Assassins Creed and Armoured Core 4 (Imo so stfu) When it comes down to it I say the both of them are capable of producing great titles. They?re fairly the same spec, even though the PS3 went over board with the nine 3ghz processors, the 360 has three and runs just the same speed. I don?t know if it was a ?They have three? We?ll have NINE then?, kind of thing, but yeah. The hardrive and graphics are almost similar as well.

So they?re fairly equal opponents in the wars, aside from the fact that Xbox live is awesome, and they get my vote =)

The Wii. It alone has a great fan base. It?s pretty off on its own little world minding its own business trying not to get involved with anything, just saying ?Hey, screw you guys, we?ll have fun and you guys can fight?.

The point is they all have something the other doesn?t.

Battle of the consoles - Super Buu - 06-07-2007

When it comes to consoles, developers make games for whatever console is most popular, regardless of technical specs. The PS2 was, tech-wise, the weakest last war, but it absolutely fucking dominated because it tapped into a large portion of gamers that had stopped playing games (in this case, the older crowd, who stopped thinking games were just for kids and started accepting it as an adult thing).

I think the same thing is going to happen this generation with the Wii. It's sold faster than either the 360 or PS3, so good games are going to come out regardless of the relatively bad specs. And hey, they can always come out with an expansion pack, 64-style. =P

This is going purely in terms of success, and not in terms of which console I think currently has the best games. I think that's PS2 and DS right now, but (as I said above) I think time will bring a great number of good games to the Wii.
