I can't stand listening to a fan running the entire night. At least the one we have. Its just so loud. Erin insists on using one though. Well, thinking on that, I think she's broke away from that a bit since I can't stand it so much (for reasons Jack mentioned).
I used to sleep with music playing quietly though when I had my computer in my room.

They say the thing about white noise partially has to do with conditioning through modern technology, like a television or computer. If you watch television or play video games or are on the computer all the time, it does something to where you are subconsciously bothered by silence.

White noise is also an anxiety suppressor. Therapists have a white noise machine in their waiting rooms to keep an ambient noise present.
