The Like/Hate Thread - Kaden - 01-10-2009 Apathy is the opposite of all emotions. Not just one. The Like/Hate Thread - Super Buu - 01-10-2009 In actual fact I think emotions are too complicated to apply terms like 'opposite' to. The idea of opposites is problematic in general from an objective point of view. But it is fun to to talk about. The Like/Hate Thread - Kaden - 01-10-2009 Rose Wrote:In actual fact I think emotions are too complicated to apply terms like 'opposite' to. The idea of opposites is problematic in general from an objective point of view. But it is fun to to talk about. In the case of "apathy" I would have to disagree. If you experience an emotion, the opposite of that is, in fact, not experiencing the emotion. Otherwise, yeah, emotions and semantics don't play well together. The Like/Hate Thread - Jack - 01-10-2009 i lik boobies The Like/Hate Thread - Misa Fujiroka - 01-10-2009 The opposite of boobies is not-boobies The Like/Hate Thread - Jack - 01-10-2009 And I definitely hate not-boobies. I'm not apathetic towards nonexistent man-tits, I don't want them anywhere near me. The love/apathy philosophy just failed. The Like/Hate Thread - Kaden - 01-10-2009 That... doesn't even make sense. EDIT: More specifically, hating or loving something is the opposite of being apathetic towards something. That's what Greg and I were just talking about. So what doesn't make sense is that you either can't read (which makes post on an online forum a fairly impressive feat) or that you were addressing an old conversation without making any actual reference to it. The Like/Hate Thread - Vad - 01-10-2009 I'm still staring at the words boobies.... The Like/Hate Thread - Jonathan Meer - 01-10-2009 I like farting in my dog's face. I'll bet he gets a whole new angle on the matter. The Like/Hate Thread - Saz - 01-10-2009 The last 24 hours, so many little irritating things have happened to me, it's all built up and now I'm tense and wound up. I just want to punch something. Oh, and it really annoys me when people say poker is a sport, or that it's 90% skill and 10% luck, or something stupid like that. The fact is you can be the best player in the world, make all the right moves, but if your opponents are always getting better cards, you're gonna lose. Even the biggest winners admit that their edge against other opponents is small, and it takes a hell of a lot of volume to see their advantage clearly shown in their results. I do appreciate the skill and strategy factor though, if it was just purely about luck I'd probable just go bet on sports instead. I like the idea that you can outsmart people, there's also a lot of math involved too that a lot of people don't realise. There's just a lot of different levels to the game. The Like/Hate Thread - Jack - 01-10-2009 Kaden Wrote:That... doesn't even make sense. Apathy/empathy hate/love It's a basic law of physics, there can't be more than one opposite to anything. The Like/Hate Thread - Kaden - 01-10-2009 Bil Baer Jaxx Wrote:It's a basic law of physics, there can't be more than one opposite to anything. It's semantics, not physics. The opposite of love is hate. The opposite of an emotion is lack of the emotion. Since love is, in fact, an emotion, it has a specific opposite of hate and a broader opposite of apathy. And thanks a lot, Belle. The Like/Hate Thread - Cain - 01-10-2009 Juno Wrote:The last book totally freaked me out. I mean, it was more about promoting gay pride than Harry Potter. I can remember the line that really made me dislike the book: Lies! The Like/Hate Thread - Kazuya - 01-10-2009 I love my Rebby. The Like/Hate Thread - Vad - 01-10-2009 I hate that my bed has these corners that stick out from the side. I hate how I know that, and I always forget and end up fucking ramming my thigh into one. I hate how much falling onto a trash bag with a couple light bulbs in it fucking hurts. The Like/Hate Thread - Super Buu - 01-10-2009 Kazuya Wrote:I love my Rebby. No offense Laura, but I think I speak for everyone else who lurks this thread when I say this -- we know. =P The Like/Hate Thread - Ashe - 01-10-2009 I like that all the constant poker bitching makes me feel not so badly about when I bitch about something WoW related. I just wish I could find that webcomic about it the other day. The Like/Hate Thread - Piper Juunanagou - 01-10-2009 I hate that the legs on my bed frame keep bending. The Like/Hate Thread - Jonathan Meer - 01-10-2009 RAD: Alright team, differential diagnosis. REI: Bent bedrame legs? Could be lupus. RAD: It's not lupus. A18: Um, could be an epiphemeral blastoma. REI: Not enough mucus in the blood. SAGE: Sounds to me like a simple case of bedtime rough-Housery. *silence* REI: I'll run some tests. |
