Favorite Video Games - Super Buu - 02-26-2009 I'm just talking about MGS 1-3. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the games and I think the stories are 'fun', just not deep. Maybe MGS4 has some mindblowingly compelling story, I can't judge that one since I haven't played it. Oh, and Jonathan Meer Wrote:The very best that one could do, however, is contradict and provide examples (which anyone, if they wanted to, could simply write off as someone reading too far deep into it).what does this sentence mean? Favorite Video Games - Jonathan Meer - 02-27-2009 Rose Wrote:what does this sentence mean? Just saying how an argument would inevitably go (and has gone when we've talked about it before). Basically, that I'm pretty sure neither you nor I could say much to make any headway on the matter. That said, I thought you were talking about MGS4. While I found MGS2 and 3 (haven't played 1) to be good games, I wouldn't really make too many claims about their depth (though I have seen a few interesting expositions on their themes). Favorite Video Games - Sage - 02-27-2009 MGS2 plot >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> MGS4 plot. That said, if Rose thinks MGS2 isn't that good... Favorite Video Games - Pinky - 02-27-2009 MGS2's story wasn't very good. It was just an inflated reiteration of the original game. There's a very distinct inverse in the franchise: each new title's gameplay is superior, while the story is inferior, and the bosses are more and more irrelevant. MGS bosses were each closely tied into the story. Because MGS2 is just MGS1.5, the bosses are forced into the story but it's not nearly as well done. In MGS3 they're just extensions of The Boss who show up and die at regular intervals, except for the big Russian but he's just a useful idiot anyway. I don't know about MGS4 but the trend is pretty firm. Favorite Video Games - Sage - 02-27-2009 MGS2 was supposed to be Kojima's 'grand finale.' He didn't want to do 3 or 4, hence why MGS3 is... well... insubstantial. Still very good but like you said, threadbare plot. MGS4 throws a lot of stuff right out the window and, well, Yahtzee said it best. There's a lot of obsessive loose-end-tying and not a lot of new story. That said, I think you missed the point if all you saw in MGS2 was a rehash. It certainly was on the surface. The game even tells you that much. Favorite Video Games - Jonathan Meer - 02-27-2009 Yeah, I wasn't too impressed with the story of MGS3, though I did enjoy the atmosphere (which, I think, was more gameplay than anything). But yeah. I haven't played 1, but I know the fundamentals of the story, and I also know that MGS2 is self-conscious in what it borrows. That's the whole point. But it's very, very different. Favorite Video Games - Rem-13 - 02-27-2009 MGS3 to me was the most fun to play out of all of them. It remains the most repayable 'modern' console games I own. Favorite Video Games - Sage - 02-27-2009 "Speak!" "In the swamp... crocodiles..." "..." Favorite Video Games - Jack - 02-27-2009 I would have played through it a good 4 or 5 times before getting bored with it, had the disc not fucking scratched. Or I think my PS2 stopped reading discs right. Idk, something happened... the point is that the game is awesome. Favorite Video Games - Pinky - 02-27-2009 I'd play MGS3 more if it didn't involve playing dress-up so often with a slow-loading selection menu. That was the worst change to the series, imo. All items should be selectable through the shoulder button menus or they shouldn't be in the game. Sage Wrote:MGS2 was supposed to be Kojima's 'grand finale.' There's a lot of obsessive loose-end-tying and not a lot of new story. It was MGS with some kooky twelve-angled conspiracy that was the equivalent of Global Jewry crammed into the last thirty minutes. Other than that, there are no substantial differences between the first two titles. Favorite Video Games - Rem-13 - 02-27-2009 You are playing it wrong. Shirtless with American Flag face paint, knife only. Favorite Video Games - Jonathan Meer - 02-27-2009 hellz ya Favorite Video Games - Super Buu - 02-27-2009 I thought MGS2's plot was probably the worst because of what Hardwood said. It was like the most ridiculous anime ever. MGS3 wasn't as ridiculous in plot, but it made up for that with it's characters who like to explore one blatant theme and be absolutely nothing else. (I'm the BEE guy! BEEEEES! Look at my BEE gun! BEE attack! I'll BEE back SNAKE LOL!!!!) MGS was probably the best plot of the trilogy, but if you ask me it's still not a lot better than your average anime in terms of depth. Favorite Video Games - Super Buu - 02-27-2009 Somewhat related Favorite Video Games - Jonathan Meer - 02-27-2009 Haha, ok, that wins. Favorite Video Games - Pinky - 02-27-2009 I forgot all about Rose because I would just speed through all game dialog. That is pretty much spot on from what I remember, though. It's only funny because it's so true. Rem-13 Wrote:You are playing it wrong. You're nuts. Not even Rambo is that manly. Favorite Video Games - Jesper - 02-27-2009 Haha. That comic thing was win. All it did was make me want to play the game again, though. <.< Probably not its intent. Favorite Video Games - Rem-13 - 02-27-2009 http://hiimdaisy.livejournal.com/ The mgs3 ones are turning out bruising as well. Favorite Video Games - Jack - 02-27-2009 "What's the password?" "Hey I have boobs!" I remember that being the stupidest part of the plot. Favorite Video Games - Pinky - 02-27-2009 Totally dropped the ball on the "bee-kini" joke. |
