Removal of Combat Ability - Sage - 12-21-2010 We could still make that official timeline, probably. I'm sure everyone knows enough of the history that we could piece it together. This thread has gotten very interesting. I know it doesn't really contribute, but I honestly have to say I've seen a lot of really cool ideas. I am not entirely sure where I stand, but I am listening to everything you guys are saying. Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-22-2010 A timeline would be useful, but pretty much totally useless to get activity up. Activity and recruitment are down because nobody fucking writes. They only way that sites like this gain support and membership is from referral, and to get referrals we all need to write more frequently. That's just how it works. Adding or taking stuff away isn't going to help to a large degree, and if it does, it won't be a longterm change. We all write intermittently for one valid reason or another, but you really can't expect new people to show if we have dwindling CURRENT writers. Would you join a site where the current members aren't even writing? Pffft, no. Removal of Combat Ability - Tyr - 12-22-2010 We just don't want new people to like Chubbs. We should want old people to like Chubbs. That's why I'm saying we should add stuff for the current people to want to do something other than miss the good old times. Just slavedriving them into writing wont do any good. Removal of Combat Ability - Orion - 12-22-2010 Leo Wrote:Just slavedriving them into writing wont do any good. Perhaps there needs to be a degree of that. If everyone is adamant that they still enjoy the site and the writing, then perhaps even when people don't feel like it, they should make themselves write. As it's been said, we have no members, and if people do come by, there is sparse writing happening here. Maybe people need to stop needing to 'feel like it' to write and simply do it, if only for the sake of the site. Removal of Combat Ability - Psyren - 12-22-2010 Right now im between a hospital and my cousins house. And I already told Vad im working on things for myself right now with my writings. I actually have been writing and planning things but havent had time to post them. (You wouldnt believe how much you could right when you have nothing to do but stare at a wall.) I love Chubbs. I have had differences with many of you but nothing can change my love for this place. I would love to see it Grow and thrive. But things have gradually slowed since the start of the summer. I know im not really adding anything to this conversastion but i thought id use this as a chance to let you all know im still here and im still working/ willing to work. It's all well and good that you want increased incentives to write, and maybe you're justified in thinking that, but there's no reason you can't write in the meantime. Establish yourself and your character. Gain some momentum. Shiny new things, while exciting, aren't guaranteed to increase anyone's activity by itself. If you don't want to write just for the sake of writing, then increased incentives probably aren't going to make the right kind of difference. Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-22-2010 People are gonna write as much as they wanna write... We don't get any real world benefit from this other than being able to enjoy writing when we want to enjoy it. You can't "slavedrive" people into writing because you have no real means of motivating them to do so other than asking politely. We all know that even with earnest intentions we may say, "HELL YEAH I'MMA WRITE MORE!" we prolly won't. You need to motivate people into writing by making it, you know, FUNNER. I have always been in the realm of thought that if you give people GOALS and ACHIEVEMENTS as well as other motivating factors, it will become fun to simply meet those goals. Like, reaching the top of the CA chart was a slog and you had to write your BALLS off to do it, but it was certainly a motivator. I'm not saying bring CA back but if you want there to be a "fun factor" you need to give people gradually increasing, objective GOALS. I would also greatly appreciate a timeline, cause as a person that hasn't been here since the dawn of time I'd like to incorporate history, but just don't know what it is. EDIT: This isn't to say that I don't enjoy writing here as it is (I haven't been due to hell-school) but these are areas of improvement that I personally see if you want to have more activity. Removal of Combat Ability - Kaden - 12-22-2010 What kinds of goals or achievements would motivate you, Sig? Removal of Combat Ability - Super Buu - 12-22-2010 I see a lot of very difficult problems being discussed here with no easy solution, but a lot of others with very easy fixes. In terms of CA, for example, I'll boil the argument down to the two opposing extremes (and I'm aware this is oversimplifying). Some people are saying that raising your CA gives more incentive to write (I agree with this), thus CA is good. Others say that CA gets out of hand and seeing people 5x your power level is a massive discouragement (I agree with this too), thus CA is bad. But seriously, I can think of several ways to have your cake and eat it. I mentioned two ways on page 1, you could also just easily raise the starting CA by a huge amount. The dude who's been writing forever who has 2000 more CA than you isn't quite so formidable when everyone starts out at 5000 CA as opposed to 500. In that scenario, power is still a factor and an incentive, but we'd be talking about rivals that might, at absolute worst, have double your CA. With more reasonable power gaps and much greater effort required to increase those gaps, I also think people would be much less inclined to say "CA doesn't matter." Seriously, though. Have I missed something here? Wouldn't that fix a whole bunch of shit? Removal of Combat Ability - Rafael - 12-22-2010 I see that as more of a CA nerf than anything. Could do essentially the same thing by chopping down the CA boost per post, which runs the risk of prolific posters feeling like they're not going anywhere if every new guy starts 10% lower than their character they've already written thousands of words developing. Edit: not that I've ever been any kind of active poster, just, as always, posting my thought process. Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-22-2010 Kaden Wrote:What kinds of goals or achievements would motivate you, Sig? I know that Piper has, in the past, put forth the idea of an achievement system similar to WoW or XBox. That idea is nice. Things like "Visit every planet" or "Win 3 PC Spars or Fights" or getting achievements for things like Sagas or events would be appropriate. Just having something that says "I've been here and I've been kicking ass". That's what CA did. It told people that you worked hard and you've been here for a while while giving some sense of assurity that you were a badass. Also, IN GAME rewards are always cool. They bring a sense of accomplishment. Having special areas in the RP world where you can do special things to get special items or abilities that you can't get anywhere else. Not necessarily a dojo, but perhaps a shop where you can complete a few quests to be able to have the right to purchase a special type of item. Things like "static events" that are going on in the world that don't necessarily need moderation, just shit that's happening in the universe that isn't 100% PC driven. They don't have to be big or crazy, just things that are THERE and you can count on to use as a plot device. You could change em twice a year or once a year to keep things fresh. Having a fluid timeline where you can literally make a mark on the world and the history of Chubbs is something that would definately motivate the hell out of me. If you create a world that you interact with and are rewarded to do so, I think that'd motivate a lot of people. At least, I know it would motivate me. Removal of Combat Ability - Tyr - 12-22-2010 What Sigfried mentioned are all great incentives and something I too pondered about suggesting, and unless my memory serves me wrong, were similar features not implemented in the "old" Chubbs? I know that that system was automated (at least it had some sort of stat system) and doing it here would either require a similar system or increased "workhours" for the moderators - but maybe that could help get the moderators back in the system as well? Having felt like they accomplished something by designing stuff that people enjoyed. I too would be motivated by the things Sig mentioned, although I would add that I'd love some sort of planetary conquest system that was also discussed earlier. This would both promote activity and player versus player action - enabling another reason for CA to be here (or at least some way of gauging a persons power beyond the quality of roleplay) p.s. Love the fact that people I haven't seen in a while pitch in with ideas, this thread is turning awesome : o Removal of Combat Ability - Dehan - 12-22-2010 Leo Wrote:What Sigfried mentioned are all great incentives and something I too pondered about suggesting, and unless my memory serves me wrong, were similar features not implemented in the "old" Chubbs? Which in itself could result in some good rp if there are multiple alliances and one sees they're more fit to be the guardians of the planet or they're evil and have another evil alliance whom they want to overthrow after having teamed up with them to take over the planet. Removal of Combat Ability - Psyren - 12-22-2010 The alliance idea is a good one and i must agree with the fluid timeline and being able to make a mark. Cuz I know im not the only one who would like for their character to be able to make a mark on History something you could show to other people and go " I did that with alot of effort!!" Thats an achievement in itself. Removal of Combat Ability - Piper Juunanagou - 12-22-2010 Planetary conquest is all fun and good if you have people who are interested in it. There was a concept like that on Another Destiny, but I think it just sat there unused (except for one exception, I believe) for the majority of its existence. Related to that, we need some alliances. Alliances were always awesome when we had active ones. Removal of Combat Ability - Sophia - 12-22-2010 Piper Juunanagou Wrote:Related to that, we need some alliances. Alliances were always awesome when we had active ones. Yes, we do. There's been talk of it dating back to Friend or Foe III, but they've yet to come to fruition. That's easy enough to rectify, I guess. Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-22-2010 It's break time for school, so now is the time to make this shit happen would be around now while people still have a break. Removal of Combat Ability - Dehan - 12-23-2010 Sigfried Hunin Wrote:It's break time for school, so now is the time to make this shit happen would be around now while people still have a break. This plus I purposely fixed my schedule this upcoming semester so I'll have more time for me. Removal of Combat Ability - Jonathan Meer - 12-23-2010 I don't know about the rest of you, but I fucking miss rp-ing as Krillin. Everyone was like 'Oh hey, just make a custom exactly like Krill and you'll be good to go' But it's not like that at all. Not in the slightest. I miss the way it used to be. We need a draw. A rp site of pure customs is not a draw. There is no reason whatsoever for people to find us in the google. A rp site of canons from DBZ would be a draw. I don't roleplay because there isn't anything to fucking do. I can't explain why it feels that way now in terms of before, but everything is just way different. Things don't feel grounded anymore without names like Raditzu or Bardock zipping around. Now I've got this weird-ass 'Psyren' and 'Jonathan Meer' shit going on that doesn't mean anything to me. To be incredibly unhelpful, if we could somehow zip back to 2005/6, I would be extremely happy. Just the atmosphere. Canons. Quests. Power-ups and techniques that actually felt like a fucking achievement (instead of this RP a bunch of dumbass shit that's useless and hey look at the algorithmic output you get numbers and techs). When I earned (and damn did I ever earn it) Kaioken x20, that was a big fucking deal. It was the stamp of approval on everything I'd written leading up to that point. I want to write on this site, I really do, but the atmosphere is all wrong. I feel icky looking at my XP. I feel icky looking at what I write, knowing that I'm doing it with the algorithm in mind. I don't even want a Tech and I can't help thinking about the fact that it's quantified and that my character's abilities are quantified, purely on the basis of how much I wrote (and not on the basis of the quality). All of this said, I hereby commit to at least one post per week of 1000+ words for the month of January.
