That's fine.

I think, perhaps, that I might reserve further comments until I see what you guys are planning on implementing.

One thing I would like to see added, and I don't know if this has been discussed yet or not, is a way to quest for items and, more specifically, weapons.

I also think that the current system for upgrading space ships is a bit involved and superfluous for an RPG that really only uses space flight out of necessity.

Weapons are definitely on the list. If you'll notice, one of the substats mentioned was "Weapon Skill." We had a whole weapon system worked out, though a "no-fat" version of that might work better. Kind of depends on if/how a couple other things get implemented.

The more... in-depth system was created in hopes of spurring activity and giving people some fodder for space-side RPing. While it did seem to do that for a couple people, the overall effect was definitely underwhelming.

It`s very likely that this is beacuse there hasn`t really been much incentive to use the system to it`s fullest extent. Besides the lack of activity one has available to do with a ship, there is very little rivlary which would spur space battles (and even that would be more likely delt with spars rather then space ships). If staff could somehow encourage more space ship roleplaying, it could possibly lead the members to use more of the options the system provides.

Aside from adding a few quests in space, there's really not a whole lot for the staff to do. Either people are going to use the mechanic or they're not.

Adding rivalry is completely dependent on the player base. Short of us walking into someone's thread and saying "SPACE PIRATE ATTACK111 UR SHIP R BREAKING1!" we can't force "rivalry" in space.

If someone wanted to create an NPC Space Pirate for them to continually encounter, that would be sweet.

The idea of incorporating ships into a saga has come up, but the limitations it imposes on the members made us shy away from that. Only the people with ships would be able to participate, and even then there are limitations on what can and can't be done. Imagine you're on your alliance ship and its just launched into the saga, what can you do? Well only one person can pilot a ship at a time, and there are only so many things you can do waiting around the ship for the next part of the saga to roll up.

Yes, there are work-arounds to those problems, but compare the annoyance of having to do that (as a member in the saga) versus just having the saga take place on the ground. Didn't pan out from a cost-benefit point of view, in the staff's eye.

However, I'll be the first to admit that a cost-benefit analysis rarely takes into account how inherently awesome a Space Pirate saga would be. I'm not saying it'll never happen, I'm just explaining why it hasn't.

Its a catch 22, we want to include more members before using ships in real staff-run events, but players want to wait for there to be more to do before investing in their ships.

Perhaps something along the lines of The League could do the trick. When I say "along the lines of The League" I mean something not as large as a saga but more permanent.

Perhaps a sort of a conflict in which two factions are involved who each seek for volunteer ships to join their cause. At first I thought of a conventional conflict. But since you speak of Space Pirates, it can be a conflict beetween a regular space fleet and a Space Pirate fleet. Or perhaps even a conflict beetween two competing Space Pirate factions.

By completing missions and destroying opposing ships, players could earn respect in a certain faction which will allow them certain benefits (ship upgrades, discounts and the like).

It would also cause some inter-player rivlary as not all people would be on the same side and would seek to destroy their opponents in order to earn respect.

Jackie Chun Wrote:By completing missions and destroying opposing ships, players could earn respect in a certain faction which will allow them certain benefits (ship upgrades, discounts and the like).

We certainly could implement a system like that, however, in the end its all going to depend on player interest. As Aqua pointed out, the whole ship system was uncharacteristically developed (relative to the previous state of space travel) and the fix you're suggesting is putting an even more complex dynamic on top of that.

Not saying its a bad idea, mind you, there are just a lot of pro's and con's to it that need to be considered.

You could always have a saga where all the major planets get destroyed and the resulting way of life consists almost entirely of space travel and migration amongst various smaller, corrupt planet colonies.

IMPORTANT: Content? - Toshiro - 11-09-2007

Doesn't... Doesn't that just seem kinda pointless thou?

Yeah, your promoting the "ships" upgrade, but what for those that actully don't wanna have one?

IMPORTANT: Content? - Aqua - 11-09-2007

They'd be left to migrate around the various minor planets that would, obviously, be in the throws of various super powers trying to conquer/ pacify the newly forming universe. It's just an idea, not necessarily a developed one.

IMPORTANT: Content? - Raditzu - 11-09-2007

I like the overall idea, Aqua.

Prolly wouldn't "destroy" the majors, exactly, but... ya know...

What do you guys think of zeni incentives for quantity? I don't know how this would play into the new stat system you have planned, but basically what I'm thinking is this: only reward TP/ XP for quests based on quality and then award zeni based on length via a formula.

So, quests and sagas could have difficulty multipliers. Here is a very simplified version of what I'm suggesting from which you guys might can work.

Level 1 Difficulty gets 0.1 zeni per word typed
Level 2 Difficulty gets 0.2 zeni per word typed

etc.

Staff merely plugs a writer's work into Microsoft word, runs word count, and multiplies the result by the zeni multiplier. If you're worried this rewards quantity too much, lower the multiplier until you get results that you like.

IMPORTANT: Content? - Raditzu - 11-16-2007

Heh. We were actually planning on doing pretty much the opposite.

Quests would end up only having a zeni reward (aside from whatever XP would be accumulated through the RPs themselves) but said reward would be proportionately higher than it is now.

Word.

That works too.

YOU work too.

Does that include non-staff members?

IMPORTANT: Content? - Waffuru - 11-16-2007

Yep. That one is actually just for non-staffies.

edit: and send me a PM if you can't post in that thread

Disclaimer: I haven't read any of the posts in this thread.

I think Chubbs needs a complete reset. Every character is set back to 1. Custom charas, the whole shit. We all start over, we all get to do that one-thing-we-want-to-with-our-characters-but-can't-because-they're-stuck
in-this-strange-state-of-flux-because-jack-shit-is-happening-and-we-don't-really
have-anything-meaningful-to-contribute-to-the-storyline-of-Chubbs.

Basically, Chubbs needs a saga. A sweet saga. But a saga right now would probably be suicidal for the RPG itself. Unless, that is, there were a reset. Further, the saga needs to be quite unlike sagas before, where there's a definite beginning, middlegame, and conclusion. Sagas have been too plasticked and bite-sized; sort of a TV dinner sort of set-up. As much as I love DA, it's far too scheduled and portioned (though, admittedly, one helluva ride). We need an overarching storyline, something that is continuously evolving, and something that ISN'T based upon politics and who is controlling Planet Vegeta this week. It would be awesome if we could rely on the member base to construct this storyline naturally through the interactions between everyone, but this clearly has not worked. We need something relatively unified, and to that end, we need characters that Staff controls for the sole purpose of creating this storyline, completely separate from the characters they control now.

Success isn't about some new XP system, or a kick-ass new Tech list. What we need is an engaging story. As it is, the horizons of Chubbs are foggy, and the only definition members provide are their own individual actions, which, because they aren't exactly doing anything, are becoming more and more scarce.

The state of "Story Guide" has been around for years, ever since the original Apprentice. I think it's time that status is expanded upon, raised to a proper level (I'd argue similar to an Administrator in scope and command), and equipped to do what they need to do to create a universe for Chubbs that people can act and interact in. If this can be accomplished, perhaps Chubbs will resurface.

Just saw this. That's actually one hell of a compliment. Thanks.

IMPORTANT: Content? - Bardock - 11-19-2007

The difficulty of a reset is convincing everyone it's in their best interest, if indeed it is. Whether it's stats or character development or years of work or whatever the reason, there's going to be a majority of people who have something to lose that they don't want to give up. It's a risk of alienating the remaining active members.
