Removal of Combat Ability - Alexander Trafford - 12-24-2010

I agree with Meer for the most part. Not about the canons and customs and whatnot, though that doesn't really matter to me and I can understand how utilizing canons would be beneficial, but about the XP/too much mathematics bit. When I'm writing I absolutely have the length in mind, which is disturbing. And when i earned a power-up it wasn't a big deal, at all. In fact I don't even know if Trafford has a power-up. It just didn't matter. But when I got KK, and then was allowed to train for SKK as Minoshia, that was a big deal to me. It meant that I was contributing to the site, that my writing and my efforts were being noticed, and it was a stamp of approval from the entire community.

That was back when i got excited about writing on this site. The last time I really, honestly felt that way was the Mercy Saga I ran and DA09. But honestly, this was bound to happen, and I'm not sure if it is even fixable. Activity is a major problem, clearly, and so it was the atmosphere. But there just isn't enough new blood out there anymore, there aren't 16 year olds old there who are in love with DBZ and want to write on an online forum about it. Interest has dried up. All we have left is the members that we have, and we have to excite them into writing more. But now we're all older, we have jobs and college and girlfriends and responsibilities and its hard to find the time or the old excitement anymore.

I miss Mercy.

Removal of Combat Ability - Super Buu - 12-24-2010

On the topic of rewards all being determined by an algorithm, I've always thought it would be really cool to have members decide rewards for each other. It's rife with complications, but I think the upsides (knowing that everyone is actually reading each other's stuff, rewards being determined more by story/writing quality) are worth considering something like that. Back when this new system advented I suggested a system that was similar, but did use word count as well, all this talk of counting words has made me consider other ideas.

I think it would take some careful watching and moderating from the staff, of course. And I don't think it would work unless more than one person read each thread. But it could kill two birds with one stone - the other bird is building up an actual writing community where everyone's reading everyone else's stuff and giving feedback.

Somehow I highly doubt it, but I'd be interested to hear what anyone else thinks.

Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-25-2010

I think that if there is an intrinsic system that allows characters to interact with a game world, compete for cool shit, be a part of history and feel connected to the world and their achievements you'll have more activity.

That's how every great RPG works. Pen and Papers are no fun if the DM doesn't flesh out the world around you. Games like Mass Effect rely on having a compelling, interactive work that you can alter to be popular. In other popular online writing sites employ a static world which can be altered by the PCs in dynamic ways.

I will put forth an effort tonight to make a model of MY person vision, not to say that it's right or good for anyone else or that it's polished or fleshed out, just to give an example of how I envision it.

Removal of Combat Ability - Victoria - 12-25-2010

Here's my two cents, I know I fell inactive too and I actually felt guilty about it. I'll tell how how I felt, why I feel this way, and...yeah.

Before I start: Leotoria is an awesome name for a fusion.

I'm sure 80% of the memberbase knows that I'm Android-18 now. I agree with what some of the others have said, if I could go back to 05/06 I'd be stoked. I loved things then, the atompshere, the storylines. When I gained my powerup in Last Man Standing I was PUMPED. You don't get that anymore. Now we all pair off, or go solo in our own stories that chances are very little people read. I'm alright with that now, but I also agree with that...it feels like something is missing.

When I rejoined as Victoria I stared at the combat list, and then at my character, and I thought to myself, "I'm going to get back to the top again."

So I calculated it, and I plotted it all out, and I wrote. I went from bottom to top in a matter of months. There IS motivation in the CA list, but people can be lazy too. I also got so enthralled by my own story, it was fun, I enjoyed it. But then I hit the top...and I stopped. There was nothing left, was there? I could have gotten dragon balls, powers, but did I want to? I don't even know the whole reason, but I found myself unable to continue.

There are a number of reasons why people don't write. I had a lot of personal issues, and I also found a different outlit for my writing somewhere else. I want to continue my story but I just...always put it off.

I'll tell you this, though, I think it's too easy. I DID do it, I got number one, and that was it. I feel like I played a five-hour video game rather than a 100 hour video game. Yes, I skipped some of the side quests, most people do. Think about adding those in-game achievments, quests, storylines. Chubbs has no storyline, not from what I can see. Where are the bad guys? We have game shows once a year if that. We need a story, maybe, something to hold onto and grasp.

I don't peticularily care about CA. I'll be upset if I lose Vic's powerup (she only uses the first one, anyway) because it's integral to my story. I actually only got it for that...I don't think I'll be fighting other players, or worrying about power. It made me want to write, yes, but what was it good for? That's a good point.

Whatever happens, I'll echo Jonathan Meer and say that from here on, I will try my best to post once a week. It may not be 1000, but it will be something.

BTW, it feels so...robotic, writing by word count. I remember when I never even knew what word count was.

That's it, probably not constructive, but I read it all and I'll support whatever we have to do. Chubbs was my home since 2002, despite what breaks and what arguments I had. I'm here.

Removal of Combat Ability - Jonathan Meer - 12-25-2010

Rose, I'm diggin' your vibes.

I don't like to write when no one reads it; I expect the rest of you are the same way. I propose this:

Keep the algorithm logging word count and its effect on XP and CA, if we must. Cut it down to 10%. The other 90% should be made up through rewards suggested by the site according to the story itself. These rewards will be discussed after a thread is completed, and declared to be so by the author(s). The discussion will occur in a dedicated topic in a particular sub-forum (titled 'Review,' or some such), which is accessible to everyone with a post count greater than 5.

In these topics, the members discuss the thread as a whole, with an emphasis upon plot, style, etc. The same criteria by which you judge a book as good or otherwise would be applied here; this would be akin to the reviews that are sometimes requested in the RPG Discussion (after all, if you're reading it, why not provide some constructive criticism, or praise?). Accompanying these analyses would be a suggestion for a proper reward, which should both correspond to the plot of the roleplay (such that the assault upon a squad of warriors might result in a valuable combat item left behind), as well as to the strength of the roleplay itself. This 'strength' can be assessed in terms of absolute prowess, or in terms of improvement. If, for example, it becomes clear to the community that a particular writer is working hard to improve herself, and that work shows in the writing, then that may be grounds for proposing a greater reward than the 'absolute prowess' might otherwise indicate.

A person may either propose a reward, or 'second' another person's proposal. If a proposal receives X seconds, it is ratified (pending Staff approval). The number specified by 'X' may need to change as time goes on, depending upon how active the sub-forum is. Considering the current level of activity on Chubbs, I suspect 4 seconds is currently enough to consider a proposal ratified and closed out. If, however, there is a split, and more than one proposal receives two seconds, then a poll is created and left open for two days, at which point the proposal with the most votes is ratified. If it is a tie, a Staff member tie-breaks.

The member whose thread is under review may make a proposal on his/her own topic, but may not second another person's proposal. That member may not vote if the proposals go to a poll.

Staff must confirm all ratifications before they are put into place. This is solely to keep the procedure from being abused. If a reward is deemed to be not just slightly, but excessively above or below what a particular thread calls for, the Staff member may submit the proposals for Staff review.

I suspect the 'criticism' aspect of this system would encourage (active) people to participate; after all, if you bother to provide criticism for a person, it seems likely that that person will bother to provide criticism for you.

This system would require a lot of all of us, particularly Staff. This might be a good reason to re-institute the 'Story Mod' position.

Removal of Combat Ability - Tyr - 12-25-2010

Man, that looks so more complicated than it needs to be. Also seems to demand work from not only the standard members who we´re trying to encourage roleplaying (not nescessarily offloading more work on them) and more on staff, despite the word count system most likely being implemented because it was much easier than revieweing each thread individually and giving a personal review and reward based upon the reading pleasure of the staff member, particularly back when Chubbs was bigger than it currently is. While it is a cool idea, in theory, that looks basically like way too much work and honestly I think I'd prefer just a staff member to do his thang and review it instead.

Also it sounds like communism. Okay it doesn´t, but really. Having every member with a post count of 5+ (that is not a lot considering the current minimum word post) chipping in every time something needs to be reviewed like a hassle. Also if a writer is on a drive (that is usually when I tend to write the most) I usually finish multiple threads on the go within short period of times, those would both need all the same members to go review two things at once and it appears to just be a mess.

Having standard members decide rewards regardless of effort put in begs for abusal of the system. I sometimes talk to Vad and most likely talk to him more than anyone else on the site, should I be tempted to read one of his pieces and therefore have valid reason to review his roleplaying, I wouldn´t claim myself to be objective because being truly objective is about as hard as hard gets. I know that in theory the numbers should outshine the one that appears to just be supporting his friend, but more than often I pull crap arguments and support them with stupid reasons ("much like this post"), sometimes people take it for decent reasons and accept the argument. I dunno, just my 2c on the matter.

Also the reasons to have this in your post to me strikes me as subjective matters that depend on the person judging them. Personally I like the plot of Star Wars but I´m pretty sure some (inhuman) person out there thought that the twist of the father was tacky and as such disliked the plot while I enjoyed it. Style is also something to be liked on a subjective level and is the reason that writers are distinctive against one another and the reason many people maybe stick to favorite writers. I´d like that "etc" elaborated with more points that maybe are less subjective.

I think your system would work, I just don´t think it should work for something that should be a game, of course that brings me back to the point of where CDBZ is headed, but yeah.

If reading the work your fellow rp-ers write and providing healthy criticism is something you don't wish to participate in, then perhaps you should consider what, exactly, you're doing here. That being your viewpoint, I don't think any system would entice you (and people like you) to function as part of the community. And that's fine, just don't expect any in-depth commentaries, reflections, and criticisms on the way you write.

I threw out a system with variables that can be tweaked. If '5' is determined to be too low a threshhold for the post count, then it can be upped.

The system I described does not require every member with a post count of 5+ to comment on every single review thread. It doesn't require a member to comment on ANY review thread. That's their prerogative. I suspect the community here at Chubbs is strong enough, with enough dedicated members interested not only in their own writing but also in the writing of their peers, that no requirement is necessary.

I never suggested members should decide rewards regardless of effort.

Be as objective as you can be. If you decide that you're unable to be objective on a particular subject, then simply excuse yourself from that subject. However, I don't think a person need be overly objective; part of the purpose of the ratification process of proposals, involving 'seconds' and, if necessary, votes, is to buff out the extremes of subjectivity. Maybe someone with a stellar reputation will get a slightly better reward, on average, than someone with a lesser reputation, but I suspect this would be negligible at best. That said, I can't think of a single person on this site, currently, that is so counter to 'common' approval that their rewards would probably suffer. If this becomes a problem in the future, it can be met and handled. At any rate, Staff approval would provide another check against this sort of abuse.

If a person thinks something is tacky, then they should vote accordingly. I don't see a problem here. Enjoyability should certainly be part of the consideration.

Removal of Combat Ability - Sigfried Hunin - 12-25-2010

Proposed board under RULES or RPG Discussion

Achievements:
You gain achievements by fulfilling specific tasks throughout the RP Universe! You may apply to have your Achievements listed on your Roster by posting in the Updates forum with a hyperlink to the achievement. Gaining Achievements will give you a small boost to your EXP and is a permanent mark of your accomplishments.

Planet Hopper- Visit every listed planet and post at least one thread on each! 15 EXP
Job Hunter- Change your Job 5 times after level up in each at least once. 10 EXP
BattleMaster- Win at least 3 character battles in a row. 10 EXP
Master Survivor- Evade certain death 4 times. 20 EXP
I know Piper has an AWESOME list of these. These are dumb lol

Example of a Planet with Static Events with some RP rewards incorporated:

Earth

Population: The majority of the inhabitants of Earth and humans. As the planet has advanced in the areas of science and technology, it has garnered the attention of some extra-terrestrial beings. Though the alien population is fairly small, it is still noticable.

Environment: Earth is home to one of the most diverse climates in the galaxy. It has everything from scalding deserts to frozen wastelands, to pleasant meadows. People have, in many areas, created more livable areas so that they can start settlements, but the harshest, most extreme enviroments are generally devoid of people.

Landscape: Most of the planet is covered in water, though there is a massive, central continent that is home to 90% of the planet's population. The other 10% reside on small islands that dot the ocean. There a couple of larger islands, home to more mentionable settlements, but they pale in comparison to the mainland.

Government: The larger cities of Earth are set up as city-states. Each one electing their own mayor and, generally, governing themselves. The mayors set up officers to help run the city and moderate relations with other cities and help keep the peace. Rarely do cities become hostile with each other, as each needs the other for trade. The planet has not seen a serious war in a long time.

Social Scene: The people of Earth are, generally, content to go about their daily lives, concerned primally with only themselves and those closest to them. Affairs beyond their immediate surroundings (ie: the city they live in) are generally of no concern, and events from other worlds are not worth mention.

Points of interest:

- Earth is home to Capsule Corp, the largest, single, intergalactic company in the universe. Their inventions can be seen, in some form or another, on almost every planet.
- Watched over by Guardian Dende and his assistant Mr. Popo.
- Home of the powerful mystic Baba.
- Kami resides within the Room of Spirit and Time, at the top of a large tower. The Room also contains the mystical Pendelum Room along with Korin's home within the tower itself, holding a storage of senzu beans.
- A large church has established itself somewhere in the western region of the mainland. This church is actually the secret base to the Moon Daggers guild.
- The eastern portion of the mainland holds one of the primary locations for the Paragon guild.

Galaxial Relations:

Namek - Friendly
Vegeta - Hostile
Arlia - Neutral
Mercy - Neutral
Frost Planet #213 – Hostile

Events Happening On Earth NOW: (This would all be Hyperlinked to the stickied events)
Capsule Corp Hiring!
Baba’s Dilemma
Climb To Korin’s
Rebuilding West City

These are the aforementioned hyperlinks:
Capsule Corp Hiring!
There are currently one position open at Capsule Corp, available to the most qualified (or most alive!) Apply at Capsule Corps headquarters for a job of adventure, intrigue and a 25% discount on all Capsule Corps items in the shop!

(This type of event would be self regulated, the character’s profession simply changing to the Capsule Corp Employee. They would have to take missions involved in keeping Capsule Corp trade routes open and dropping important packages. It is up to GMs how much the character could alter the “personality” of the corporation by taking scandalous or profound missions.)

Baba’s Dilemma!
Baba, the powerful magic user, is in great need of Dinosaur tails for a magical ritual. Any person that is willing to bring her five great dinosaur tails will receive a magical favor and be unkillable (but still subject to defeat!) in their next non-saga battle.

(You could simply mark this as an item or have a separate area on the profile for this type of benefit.)

Climb To Korin’s
Korin is willing to offer a senzu bean to any individual who can face his 4 defenders and ascend the Tower without the use of flight or any other assistive abilities! He figures the world has gone soft, and isn’t going to just give them away anymore. Each of the four defenders specialize in one of the following (names in parenthesis): Strength (Cinnamon), Focus (Mint), Endurance (Chocolate), Agility (Ginger). Each is stationed at a random location on the spire, waiting to assault the climbers!

(This kind of event can either be character led or Mod assisted by playing the defenders. Either way, a post requirement needs to be in place.)

Rebuilding West City
West City is still ravaged from its most recent engagement! The governor is pleading to the able and enhanced public to help reconstruct the city. Any person actively helping rebuild the city gains access to a Personal Headquarters for the duration of their stay. If more than one person is helping alongside in a similar effort, it is upgraded to a standard headquarters so long as both continue to work on the project. Either option has an available healing chamber in the form of a nearby hospital and a warehouse. You must work at the city once per OOC month to retain these benefits.

(This kind of benefit needs to be monitored and thought out well, but it is a good example of the types of things you could work out while trying to maintain balance.)

These kind of events are going to bring characters together, have them compete for exclusive tasks and try to prevent others from getting powerful benefits! This is the kind of thing you’d expect in this universe.

Player-based RP Rewards system (really, REALLY, rough)

Each writer will have a proposed RP Points pool. You will get more RP Points by giving MEANINGFUL FEEDBACK for other’s posts. The person who is being graded will be the one to award the points on each review. You can spend these points on RP Rewards which include things like Power Ups and other important character developing powers, techniques and items. Maybe infusing a few RPP into a technique that you buy with EXP could make it better for one reason or another, allowing a character to diversify his arsenal by giving back to the community (in a writing community, feedback is just as important as new material!) They don’t have to be the ones that are available NOW, but I will include a few to set the scene.

EX:
0 RPP: No meaningful information. Only praise or only scorn with no reasoning.
1 RPP: A little bit of feedback. May point out one or two working points.
2 RPP: Gives good feedback on both positives and negatives of the work
3 RPP: Astounding feedback, changes the way you write

“Blah blah blah, you need to work on X Y and Z. I like 1 2 and 3 because of A B C.”
-Derp

“Thanks Derp! This was really helpful. (Awards 3 RPP)”
-Derpette

Derp now has 12 RPP, and he wants to use them for his own character.
He chooses to put some stats to his fleshed out character and buys the “Memory Induced Rage” technique (of which a prerequisite would obviously be a significantly scarring memory that would be listed with the tech) which will give him an extra 15% to his abilities for one battle per saga/adventure. This is a fairly powerful technique and would require him to spend all 12 of his RPP.

In order for an RPP system to work, you need to give them serious weight. They should give you access to more than exp (which you gain by writing) or zenni (which you gain for completing you jobs) because it actively makes you be a part of the community. Maybe RPP can be awarded along with EXP for spars and battles over the Dragon Ball to increase interactivity even more!

Then add in a fluid timeline based off of what OOC year it was and what happened in sentences or less. Characters can elaborate on their own pages if they wanna.

Now, obviously I didn't spend a crap ton of time on this. I cranked it out just to throw around some ideas.

Removal of Combat Ability - Kaden - 12-25-2010

Damnit, Sigfried... now it's totally going to look like I just copied some of those Achievements from that post.

There are definitely some good ideas being thrown around, some of which are already being discussed on the staff forum.

Meer, I like your proposal a lot, but I hold no hope of it actually working. Ever. You're absolutely right in saying that if people don't expect to give or receive criticism, they should question why they're here, but they don't. The simple of act of posting "I liked it, they should get 10 XP" is enough to keep people from doing it. Shit, look at the Profession system; people have outright said they don't turn in quests simply because they don't want to take the time to post in the Updates forum. It's ridiculous.

The one that I think probably should happen, regardless, is reducing XP gain. I actually said, roughly three months into the RPG, that I was gaining too much XP per post, but it was dismissed as me being an outlier. While we want people to gain XP to purchase Custom Techs and flesh out their character, it eventually trivializes what should be interesting and engaging.

EDIT: Assuming we implement Achievements (which is fairly likely) what kind of rewards would people like to see attached to them? My initial thought was that the Achievement was enough on its own, but would people be disinclined to go for them if they didn't have XP or Zeni attached?

How about make it so that - perhaps with a bit of free license when you're new to the RPG - you can't request feedback/a reward unless you yourself have given feedback.

Or even give monthly awards (a link to DA CHEIVES?!) for the best feedbackers.

Removal of Combat Ability - Jarka - 12-25-2010

Well, I'mma weigh in as probably the most active newest(ish) member (I know I went inactive, but grad school takes precedence over creative writing and I did plan on returning).

Removing CA completely kills any interest in me writing for this website.

See, most of the IC writing on this site is done purely selfishly - there's no goals to pursue, it doesn't affect anybody else (except when you're partnered with somebody, but still) it's just writing for writing's sake.

What CA essentially is is a leaderboard. You can see just how much you have written compared to other, older members on the site. You can set goals for yourself - Today I'm going to post an entry long enough to beat <user_name>'s CA! Sure, you might be discouraged on a macro level - nobody looks at Vic's score and is, like, "Totally gonna get that in a week." However, it can be extremely motivating on a micro level as you claw your way up the page rankings one post at a time. As soon as I'd post, I'd run over to check just how I did on CA.

Considering how rarely people perform in sagas and partnered storylines, differences in CA rarely affected the gameplay. Without it, though, what's the point in even making sure you remain active at all? Just post when you feel like it - you could come back after being out for a year and completely destroy somebody who had been posting regularly the whole time.

So, yeah, you kill CA and you lose a new(ish) member, which seems to be what you're trying to avoid. Interesting.

Removal of Combat Ability - Jonathan Meer - 12-25-2010

I understand the pessimism Mario; maybe I'm too hopeful.

As Rose is pushing, though, I'm certain there's a way to make it work. Perhaps some sort of system where a thread may not be submitted for review unless the individual is actively providing feedback herself. And not meager feedback either, but something substantial: something that makes it clear the individual actually has read the work of others, and is intelligently suggesting a sufficient reward.

Put another way, if people don't want to bother reading their peers' work and making sure they're duly rewarded, fuck 'em. I, for one, would bother, and would bother often.

Removal of Combat Ability - Vad - 12-25-2010

I don't post quests because I'm a moron who asks for a two page thread to be graded as one quest...

300z isn't worth posting a 2 page thread. xD

Removal of Combat Ability - Tyr - 12-25-2010

Upon further consideration, I do enjoy your proposal Meer. It may have been the state of mind when I posted earlier and while most of it is still relevant and should be taken up on consideration, I have no harsh feelings against reading and judging other people's job. I personally have an issue of people judging mine from time to time because I thoroughly hate reading through my work, it kills the flow for me as a writer to go back step by step and judge it. It would be like playing Prince of Persia, a game built upon flow between fantastic acrobatics where you fly smoothly through the air and run across walls then sometimes with a delightful breath of "fresh" comes in the plot to remind us why you're enjoying Prince of Persia-syndrome, that brings the experience to a slight halt before you do it all over again - except now you use your rewinding time dagger to go back from the start and judge why you in fact did jump instead of duck over that branch and how it would affect the reader to read that piece of work. It breaks flow and that is why most professional writers have proofreaders; so they don't lose their will to write reading their own stuff.

Here your suggestion would work fine - I don't have to read it but still get rewarded for the amount of effort I've spent on it and here is the problem because I like getting rewarded the most possible and that would force me to read my work and judge it as anyone else. I know this may seem like a petty criticism, but me (and as such "people like me") would probably feel the same way and that would probably cut a bit in the recruitment effort.

Removal of Combat Ability - Jonathan Meer - 12-25-2010

Most writers re-read what they write repeatedly.
