He gets more play as a straight-AP carry when he's actually picked. He doesn't scale particularly well, but his ult can be pretty devastating.
He's... fine as a support, I guess. Does a lot of damage and his slow/haste can make engaging/disengaging pretty easy. I can't really imagine a comp where I think "yeah, Zilean is the perfect support." What he brings to the table, support wise, is just outclassed by a lot of other champs.

I played him before and liked him... and I made a SMurf and this weeks rotation has NOTHING that I play... Cept him.
So how do I build him?
I was looking at that Tear of Godeess hard... hehehehe That into Archangelstaf.. and ROA. .. then Dethcap... just seems fun as crap...
Cept I still lose myself in battles... Which Trig and KB have found to be my Worst issue>_>

Honestly, not really. He's pretty straightforward. Doublebomb folks in the face, slow 'em down when you need to or speed up your jungler for instance during a gank, or give up double bomb to do both, practice timing your ult so people can't see it and consciously not finish someone off until it ends, etc.

Ult whoever is going to be making the biggest contribution to a team fight. That's usually not Zilean.
When bombing people, the damage its explosion does is based off of your target's MR, it doesn't check the MR of everyone you hit. So you'll do more damage to the enemy team as a whole if you double bomb a support or ranged ad.
Also don't forget that he has a slow and there are lots of times its more useful than the haste.

King B, Alex, Ashe, Tryg, Kaden, Jarka... Even Weemus... and others... I play with them when I'm off and up... They know my play style enough... And know how to see where I am weakest.... And how I should build an AP Champ/Support...
I'm Not Sure his masteries/runes are built like I would Build Kat... who I have a standard AP page for... And Rune page too...
But this is the Champions page... And you talk about Champions and how to build them here... I think right?

Zilean's slow is really good for picking off that one person that's straggling. It's a DEVASTATING slow and can easily turn around a fight or a game for you. Runes and masteries are fairly simple. Once you get blue you're unstoppable mid game and laning phase. His scaling falls off really hard late game, but he has so much utility in his ult and slow/haste that it doesn't hit him that hard. You just gotta make sure you make the transition from AP Carry to backline support/ap damage. Cast rewind a lot whenever you're not doing anything, it refreshes the cooldown of an otherwise very long cooldown ult.
A general build on him would be: Merc treads, RoA, Void Staff, Rylai's, Deathcap and Frozen heart or Archangel's Staff.
Also when you're Zilean, you have to take into account the experience advantage that you have against your lane opponent. I would play him very aggressive mid lane and secure big advantages in early trades. Zilean's bomb with 3 points in it is disgusting.
