I just find it hard to get angry about the hacking because it's not like it's malicious. These are chair-bound Chinamen throwing hooks into the sea of mental infirmity that is the WoW playerbase, hoping for a catch so that they can raid your characters for gold that they can sell online. The actual amount of money the dude dicking with your account gets is pretty negligible, and you shouldn'tve been caught anyway (because 99.99% of the time it's a keylogger).

It's business. The reason it exists it because people buy the product. I more hate the guys that buy gold than the guys that raid it.
What the hell is that for an attitude? Mercenaries butchering innocent people in public executions is a-ok for you because someone bought them as a product? It's okay to steal TVs as long as you have a buyer for it? Ordering the crime doesn't make it any less of a crime.

Hate: Slept over me and missed my train. God dammit. Maybe I can finally get some writing done though.

I think I get what Belle's trying to say. Gold Farmers are only as bad as long as there is a market for the gold. If people stopped buying the gold, they wouldn't be supporting said Gold Farmers in their business. It's kind of like how the reason Mexican Drug Lords have so much power is because we (America) keep buying their friggin' drugs. If we stopped, said drug lords wouldn't have a lot of money to throw around to produce and pandle their drugs.

No, you fucking idiot.

My point is that, like hunger and war, hacking is almost inevitable.

That doesn't mean you don't get angry about slaughter in war, or the fact that there is hunger, but I don't come in here every time something goes wrong in the world to say 'man, I hate war.'

It's assumed.

Do you honestly think think I'm saying killing innocent people in public executions (which, by the way, had nothing to do with anything I said) is okay?

Oh hey, another thing I hate: fucking false equivalence.

When I think about the dudes that do the hacking, these are probably guys that work like 12+ hour days, doing incredibly mindless, repetitive jobs generating e-currency through hacking so that they can scrape together some yens. They probably go home late, alone, to some shitty apartment/hole in the wall/basement, and do what they can to eat and rest before they sleep so that they can wake up the next day and do the same thing.

It's hard for me to hate such people - even if they inconvenience me. It's not as if it's personal, so while I may get angry at them - and while I may not like them - I don't hate them. Especially when the only reason they exist is because WoW Users keep buying gold.

e: And again, the only reason why you get hacked is generally because you fucked up and clicked something obviously suspicious or answered one of those phishing e-mails, aren't running a virus-guard, don't have your username saved in the top box (keyloggers can't record what you never type!)...

Not to piss you off further, but that's a cookie which can easily be obtained if they know what they're doing.

Just quoting that part about mercenaries of my argument is fine and dandy seeing how it's extreme, but the TV thing is spot on. This is a Like/Hate thread. You post what you like/hate. If you hate war, why not express yourself in a like/hate thread?

Also calling me an idiot is uncalled for as I have done no personal attacks against you bar the statement that you yourself stated. If you can't take commenting on something as basic as your own statements, you should stay clear of public forums.

Justifying it by saying it's "just another nine to five" job is bullshit. So is pickpocketing. So is burglary (except for the time frame). Crime is a job too and most people who are criminals tend to work for it as well. What a ludicrous reasoning. "The darkest hour never comes at night" and down to it it's your decision whether or not you would do it.

"You can avoid it if you know what you're doing", christ, it's nearly impossible to guarantee that you wont get hacked in your lifetime. You even saw how Vad had to trace the website, name me once where you had to do that. Also, anti-virus isn't flawless in any shape way or form. I lost a critical e-mail because it was flagged as from a phishing site when in fact it was a warning telling me someone was attempting to get my account from me. Did I get to see that? No, because it was too hard for the anti-virus to notice the difference.

Also saving your password/username is dumb, because like Vad says, everyone can retrieve that cookie and see it if they know what they're doing. Try it yourself if you got an automated log-in process:

Firefox,
go into Options, Security and click the tab "Saved passwords" (that's the name for it in Danish).

Username, password, all on your computer. Enjoy.

Vad Wrote:Not to piss you off further, but that's a cookie which can easily be obtained if they know what they're doing.

Which shouldn't happen if you're running a firewall/anti-virus guard.

The latter of which is free.

Going back to my original point, I have very little pity for people that repeatedly get hacked and refuse to take even the most basic steps to counter it.

The Like/Hate Thread - Rebekah - 01-14-2011

Again, not to put flames on the fire. Look up Backtrack 4 R2. I can sit by your house and break your wireless encryption and start stealing packets. I can piece that information together and viola. I've got information.

Now. Battle.net's login is SSL secured (it uses asymmetric encryption) so I agree with Belle about that. They would need to physically bypass your security (which most people use Windows' and it's pretty good) and actually copy your cookie files.

It's trickier than I make it out to be, but the information is still there.
