The Hunger Games. I can see the parallel with Battle Royal, but the movie wasn't bad at all. It was actually pretty damned good.

I didn't enjoy it particularly... The camera work for this movie was COMPLETELY retarded half the time. It did not explain the premise or delve into back-story more, which for a movie such as this that is based around a fictional world back-story is kind of everything.

Comparing that to Battle Royal was the main thing that kept me from enjoying the movie. It wasn't a bad movie or anything but when you compare it to Battle Royal, it's definitely inferior.

Not at all a bad movie though. It still kept me entertained half the time.

I'd say it gave as much back story as Battle Royale did. An intro, and very little more. The following two books, from what I've heard, continue to develop the setting outside of the Games themselves, as well.

The districts and its history were brushed through in literally one sentence. In Battle Royal, they at least explained their motivation and how the BR act was passed. I don't really know much about the books, but the movies was very lazy in its attempt. Maybe the book doesn't explain the back story much either, but yeah, that's how I saw it.

Usually when I read a book and then watch the movie, I end up hating the movie because it doesn't go into the wonderfully subtle anything that the book had. In the case of The Hunger Games, I actually enjoyed it, and I thought the decisions they made for it were understandable and appropriate. The sets and the characters were actually pretty close to what was in my head, too. I think it was a challenge to convey all the backstory because the book was written in first person, so there's a constant inner monologue explaining all that. If you've seen the movie/read the book Perfume, it's a similar case. The book is beautifully written, and the movie is a stunning visual accompaniment. So, no, you're not getting the full picture, but it sets the scene really well and hits the major notes. IMO.

Yeah the camera work during the action sequences was fucking batshit retarded. There's a fine line between trying to add some shaky camera for added effect, and then there's giving your audience vertigo/seizures. This one was very close to the latter. Half the time I couldn't even tell what was going on during those particular takes.

I thought as a stand-alone movie it was okay. But like King said, when you compare it to Battle Royale from a story/character stand-point, it kinda hurts it a bit. But Hunger Games is about something larger then the game itself (rebellion, corruption, etc) and Battle Royale is strictly about the game and how to survive. So it's not 100% fair to compare it.

As a movie, it was cool. My biggest complaint (aside from the BR comparisons), is that the action scenes spent too much time trying to not be violent. The shaky camera allowed them to A) have half-assed choreography because you couldn't see 75% of it and B ) they're trying to tone down the violence for PG-13.

It was okay. I'll watch the rest of the movies. The acting was fantastic, the effects are fairly cool. But it's not going to replace Battle Royale in my mind as #1 of the genre.

EDIT:

The biggest thing I can't help but compare is that The Hunger Games is about Katniss and how she becomes this instrument in the Rebellion. Battle Royale is about 40+ kids and how they interact knowing they have to outlive their own friends to survive. So Hunger is about one chick, and Battle Royale spends time fleshing out every single kid. It's hard to fairly compare when it's two different ways to go about the story (one is first person present tense, the other is third person past tense), but I know what my preference is.

The problem with The Hunger Games was the hype surrounding it. Honestly, the last movie I remember having this much hype was Dark Knight and Kingdom of Crystal Skull.

You know what I did not like about Hunger Games at all? Katniss was supposed to be poor as shit, she's skinny and poor! She's constantly hungry and that adds desperation! And then I see the movie and the actress has an ass and boobs and meat on her bones. No she wasn't fat at all, that's not what I'm saying. She just wasn't broke ass poor skinny. Katniss describes being able to see her ribs at the end of the games in the book, stuff like that helps. It's powerful. I never got that same feeling in the movie at all though. That really bugged me about the movie compared to the book.

I don't think comparing the book to the movie is ever fair. The book will forever be much better than the movie. Stand alone it was an okay movie, I actually sat through it with ease. It just bothered me how sloppy the script of in terms of describing the back story. I think the movie just assumed everyone read the book and skipped very important details and that's just not cool.
