These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Trygelan - 08-12-2012 Started watching Hyouka. Loving it. Also, I get sad when what's going to be airing next is shown and Chihayafuru isn't on the list. I want the second season to be out already damn it.

These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Anzekay - 09-02-2012 KYoUSOGIGA! I am otherwise disappointed by the lack of really unusual or mundane premises in that lineup. Third NGE movie, as well as the Madoka Magica movies are things to look forward to! These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Trygelan - 09-29-2012 Now and Then, Here and There... save yourself the trouble if you haven't seen it already and don't watch it if you get annoyed by one dimensional main characters. The main character ruined it for me, he's absolutely annoying beyond acceptance, especially since it's not what I expected the main character to be like going into that anime. Other than the main character, it was really good, a lot of powerful and serious themes covered, just not given the justice I think they could have been given because of Shu. I just can't get over how much the main character annoyed me. Really ruined it for me. Other than that, this upcoming season has a lot of stuff I'm looking forward to, but mostly I want the winter season to get here for the 2nd season of Chihayafuru. -_- These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Trygelan - 09-29-2012 To clarify, I had heard that Now and Then, Here and There (NTHT) tackled some serious material, and it does, but Shu, the main character, is completely unlikable, one dimensional, and way more annoying than I was expecting in something tackling these kinds of issues. So, I went in to NTHT with pretty high expectations, and had them shattered because of Shu. So... that explains my disdain of the show, I feel it could have been so much more with a less one dimensional and annoying character. These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Anzekay - 09-29-2012 There's a lot of interesting allegory hidden in Shu's character and actions, though a few of them are a bit more closely tied to Japanese culture. What his kendo stick symbolizes, and what happens with it, was a pretty impressive bit of writing. That said, I can see why you'd find him frustrating to watch, though I didn't find him quite that annoying (even if he wasn't the best piece of writing in the show). The rest of it though, honestly, did make up for his shortfalls with the sheer brutality of how they presented some of the core themes. These are pretty cool animoose, I suppose - Trygelan - 09-29-2012 Oh, I understand all the meaning behind most everything in the series, I just had a hard time getting around the fact that he was entirely one dimensional the entire series. You can basically take episode one Shu and compare him to episode thirteen Shu and find they are the exact same, no character development. The rest of it was handled pretty well, not shying away from the brutality of some of the themes and such, I just have a hard time getting over Shu's character. When I have certain expectations of a show, based on what I've been told of the themes and such, I tend to not be able to forgive a lack of character development like that, especially when I know the people handling the show can do it considering what they did with Sara's character. In other genre's, or anime with other themes, I can forgive the lack of character development, or a main character being one dimensional...
I just can't get over them having his ONLY answer to anything he said, mostly to Sara, be "It'll be ok!", even after she got raped, had to kill a guy, watched the town that took her in and was taking care of her get slaughtered and enslaved, he still goes "It'll be ok!". That could have been handled much better.
I just feel how they handled Shu detracted too much from the overall show personally for me to find it as powerful, moving, and enjoyable as a lot of others seem to find it. |
