Left 4 Dead - Super Buu - 11-06-2008

For those who don't know what this is: new game by valve that focuses on co-op gameplay. You play as one of four survivors and basically you've gotta go through levels whilst dodging the zombie horde. There are several 'boss' zombies with special powers, like the smoker who can latch onto people with his long tongue and drag them in, the boomer who explodes in a shower of bile (which attracts dozens of zombies should you accidentally get it on you) and the witch, who won't attack you unless you disturb her by getting too close or shining light on her (but should she attack she will KEEL you motherfucker, just KEEL you).

It is set up to be something like a movie, and there is an 'AI Director' who basically controls the pacing, where zombies, weapons and health items appear, etc. Sometimes you will get attacked by a gigantic horde, after which you might progress to the next area with relative ease ... then the music starts to build up again until you stumble upon another gigantic group. It's set up to make the levels different each time you play through them.

There is a versus mode where extra players can take the role of the boss zombies, respawning around the map and generally making things shit for the survivors.

I can't be bothered to explain everything else that's sweet about this, so look it up if you wanna.

The demo is available for download now and the official release date is November 18th. If you pre-order it on Steam it's 10% off the price.

If you're not excited as hell for this game, watch the opening movie:

I am playing on PC, by the way.

I haven't pre-ordered yet but I really should.

You jerk!

Left 4 Dead - Super Buu - 11-06-2008

The demo is pretty amazing but it's a real cocktease just letting us play one level. The rabid movement of the zombies is VERY reminiscent of 28 days later, because they don't move in a straight line exactly, and they're not super-predictable. They jump up on things, climb drainpipes etc.

There's a real sense of panic in the game, the music and the director helps this a lot. It's so true to the nature of zombie films in that (especially on higher difficulties) shit can go very sour very fast. When someone gets grabbed by a smoker (usually me) the music goes nuts and you've got to shoot them immediately or risk losing a teammate.

I also love the dialogue of the characters, it adds a lot of personality to the game. It's all character specific (so if you pass by the corpse of a teammate who's died, Francis might be like "Bill ... I'm sorry man").

November 18th can't come soon enough.

I really don't need more games.

Left 4 Dead - Super Buu - 11-07-2008

Has that ever stopped any of us, ever?

I'll be getting this when it comes out. Dunno if I'll demo.

Left 4 Dead - Super Buu - 11-07-2008

I knew I was getting it anyway, and if you pre-order it on Steam it's 10% off, so it was a no-brainer for me. The demo was just to sweeten the deal.

I think my best moment so far was when I unwittingly re-enacted a classic zombie movie moment. One of our teammates was wandering off by himself, way away from everyone else, which in this game is pretty much a deathwish. So I run back to the room he's in, leaving the other two dudes up top. It would only take like 20 seconds so it wasn't that big a risk, but longer I waited the more likely zombies would come, so I hurried.

The moment I get there, the director decides it's time to open the gates of hell and behind him a horde of zombies come running down the escalator, jumping over shit and popping out of doors. If he'd have been alone he'd have been fucked, but we manage to fight them off.

It reminds me of the classic moments in zombie films where some dude always goes back to get the reckless guy and ends up dying for the other dude's stupidity. Luckily I survived this one with some minor flesh wounds. It made me grin though.

Sounds like a blast. Too bad I don't have XBL.

It's on Steam as well (PC). And Valve's games are usually better played on a computer. I don't understand how anyone could buy Orange Box on 360 unless their specs weren't up to scratch.

I would like to take a moment to emphasize how awesome Valve are at optimising games. A lot of people are saying this runs better than TF2. I honestly think the main thing that's held back gaming on the PC is requiring an epic system, this is why I love companies like Valve and Blizzard so much who cater to the cheapass too.

By the way, expert is INSANE. Last night I was with a group and we got encountered a boomer, a smoker and a hunter at the same time we were being mobbed by regular zombies. I was the last alive, and I was being dragged away by a smoker's tongue and then a hunter interrupted the smoker by jumping on top of me and killing me.

Strangely the only time I've beaten expert was with a group of people who didn't speak a word of English. My only communication with them was basic stuff like 'HELP', but somehow we managed to work as a team. The automated voice cues help out so much.

I completely agree. I think very few companies have earned the right to cater exclusively to the people who can afford regular upgrades to keep their computer l33t.

Left 4 Dead - Sage - 11-09-2008

My comp can't handle it, yo.

Besides, I don't much like PC gaming if I have a console alternative. I preferred HL2 on 360. *Shrug*

Left 4 Dead - Rem-13 - 11-11-2008

First off, PC gaming is the best gaming. Secondly, demo is good. I'm a bit worried the main could get repetitive though.

Left 4 Dead - Super Buu - 11-11-2008

I'm quite surprised with how well it replays so far. I've been playing the demo a lot just for fun, and it's only the first two levels. I can't wait to play the other 18, especially since I expect they'll be harder (the only difficulty which really challenges me anymore for the demo is expert). Not to mention versus mode as the zombies. Some people have been able to play as the infected using console commands, but I can't open the console in L4D for some reason. =(

That said, I really hope they add more map packs after launch. This kind of game is perfect for it. I'm also interested to see what the modding community comes up with. If it takes off then I can see myself playing this for a long time, just like WC3 with all its custom maps.
