Ok, so you know how cancer eats away at your good tissue cells and that's how it starts to kill you? By eating you?

Imagine this...cancer that eats cancer cells. So once that cancer ate away all the cancer cells and had nothing to eat, it would die because that's what it fed off of, or like an antibody that had served its purpose, float harmlessly around your body because what it identified as food was no longer present. If you could mutate a strain of cancer to identify cancer cells as food instead of normal tissue cells, theoretically, couldn't you create a cure to cancer?

I know there are many specific types of cancer, but similiarly, there are various types of hepatitus that is fought off with completely different vaccinations. So if you took a sample of a specific type of cancer (as most vaccinations come from a sample of the virus/bacteria/disease they're created to fight) and mutated it with the properties an antibody consisted of that helped it identify a specific target, is it not conceivable that this new strain of cancer could feed off of the old strain of cancer, while not identifying normal tissue cells as a source of sustenance?

Its an interesting idea, and one that has applied to numerous other situations. I think the problem would be preventing the helpful cancer from mutating further, especially when its already been pushed to be able to do that, and hope you don't get double cancer OR this cancer starts losing track of what exactly its supposed to feed on. Cancer is so varied as well that its hard to trust something like that.

I don't even think it works that way though. To my understanding, there is no "feeding" type thing, its just that they corrupt what's near it, and then that corrupts what's near it, by screwing up the chemicals for whatever the cells need.

"Double cancer" made me lol.

If I remember correctly, the issue with cancer is that the 'suicide mechanism' within the cell is destroyed, so that a cell does not die when it is no longer useful. These same cells still replicated, producing more copies of itself with this same fault.

So it's not so much that cancer destroys cells around it, or that it corrupts them, but that it continuously expands itself.

Wasn't cancer-eating-cancer essentially the zombie-creating plot device for I Am Legend?

I believe so.

Yeah... Cancer is one of the few things I rarely laugh about.

Oh shit. You're right.

Fuck you Celipa, the hell are you on? Trying to kill everyone 'cept the black man?

So there's a such thing as double cancer?

Cancer - Sullivan - 12-28-2008

Damn. How dare you catch onto me?

Just kidding. I didn't realize that that was the main plot device to I Am Legend.

I don't understand the point of this thread.
Are we curing cancer or something?

Cancer - Rem-13 - 12-28-2008

I for one think this cancer business has gone on for too long. All we need is a vaccine!

Problem is that Cancer isn't a virus or bacteria. It may not even be a disease at it's core level. It is a cell mutation. One cell basically goes hulk and starts replicating itself.

The virus/bacteria/disease part, is the fact that the "Cancer Cells" or the cells that once were your body, feed off everything else. Thus why you die from it.

My mom recently had Thyroid Cancer, easiest to cure of them all. And this is the only thing I took away from biology that had any value.

I might be touching a general surface, but it's a start.

EDIT: The mutation is as deep as genetics, so a 100% cure is impossible. In the sense of eradicating it. You could though, remove it from one's body 100%, but since, for example, breast cancer, is commonly received because of genetic heritage, you'd need to alter that to fully eradicate the thing that plauges us called Cancer.

EDIT2: Again don't quote me, I'm not a doctor.

No, we are creating a super human race creature's of the night. To help exterminate the world of the black man.

Cancer - Jack - 12-29-2008

Wtf, where does that leave me?

Well, he did say a superhuman race to destroy the black guys, but I think they'll pass on you. <3

Dead.

Cancer - Kami - 12-29-2008

*didn't read everything*

If you had a mutated cancer cell that ate other cancer cells it would eat all the other cells too and be a more malicious cancer would it not?

Cancer - Sage - 12-30-2008

*Skipped a lot of shit*

I've always believed that - based on cancer's 'immortal' cellular characteristics - it may help us reverse or stagnate a normal cell's perogative to ultimately die. In other words, we could possibly use it to prolong our lifespan someday. Perhaps by double. It's... exciting, but still very little is understood. We have a long way to go to even decide if it's possible or not.
