I see that certain elements of the new CDBZ system is lifted from the NRPG development, and honestly that's all for the better. However, I don't understand why you guys stopped short of adding "negative abilities" or disabilities. As fun as it is to gain special skills to flesh out a character in concrete terms, it's also useful to be able to do the same by adding developmental problems.

This was a main issue throughout the Dragonball manga: Goku was a thoroughly uneducated doof, Bulma was incompetent in battle and self-centered, Yamcha was cripplingly shy in front of a vagina, Roshi being a shameless pervert, Oolong being bad at controlling his ki, and so on. Although negative, it really helped to define the characters as more than just super-fighters.

In an RPG context, it would give the players a goal to overcome. Not that the problems could simply be roleplayed away - in the manga, the flaws often caused the characters to seek the Dragonballs as a solution. The rules for abilities seem easy good enough: a maximum of two, and to incentivize it the characters could gain some bonus XP depending on the severity of the problem gained. I think it would be beneficial to the game to make the Dragonballs something more than a mere power-gaining tool.

I tried to think of a way to balance it out so Dragonballs could be used to inflict extra flaws on characters, but that was overpowered. Plus, it only happened in GT and nobody wants to validate GT.

Example problems:

Inner Weakness: Removes 15% from the character's total Stats percentage. +10 XP.

Ki Blindness: Cannot have the Ki Sense Ability or learn the Fighting Sense Technique. +5 XP

Ki Ineptitude: Poor ki manipulation. Cannot have Ki Specialization Ability or learn the Ki Control Technique. +5 XP.

Martial Arts Ineptitude: Inferior hand-to-hand fighting ability. Cannot have M.A.S. +10 XP.

Phobia: Un-ignorable fear that causes disabling fright. XP Bonus depends on the commonality of what causes the fear. +5/10/15 XP.

Plus custom disabilities, too.

Whats the "+10 xp" for?

EDIT: Nevermind, I see now.

Anyway, they would get +10 exp one time only?

I kind of like this, but we would probably have to make the list for them to choose from. We don't need multipul "lost limb" candidates.

Also, a question: why isn't the RULES forum available on the quicklist at the bottom of the page?

Disabilities? - Ashe - 01-05-2009

We discussed this when we were talking about Traits.

Disabilities? - Alura - 01-05-2009

I like it

Wouldn't that be a direct ripoff from AD?

I don't like stealing things.

No clue, but that's fixed.

The idea's been around since long before AD. And even if it was a direct ripoff, I still wouldn't consider it stealing because it's not like AD wouldn't be able to use it anymore =P I'm constantly suggesting things that I've either used before on AD, or was going to use for AD but decided not to (ie Traits). It's a cool idea, so use it.

Disabilities? - Pinky - 01-05-2009

I assume AD refers to Arrested Development.

But, if giving Bonus XP is too cumbersome to bother with then it could be a counter-balance for Abilities. For instance, a characters gets one free Ability to start with, but to get the second Ability then you have to pay for it by taking on at least one Disability.

Supes posted here, so I'm going to post, too!

We had something that was like "Vices" or "Failings" or summat tied to traits. Yes, you could get a bonus when fighting a stronger opponent with Defiant, but you'd have a weakness too - an Achilles heel - that the saga runner could occasionally exploit if he wanted to. Cowardice, Pride, Lechery, and Gullibility were among these.

In the end it was decided that if any playing off of disabilities or Vices or whatever was entirely in the hands of the saga runner that it likely wouldn't be used all that much and that, while an interesting idea, didn't really gel with the kind of player freedom we had set up.

As to this idea: Flat XP one-time bonuses doesn't make sense to me. The adding of a multiplier to your gained XP would be unbalanced, cheesy, and also not fun. Being able to get more abilities by having disabilities would, I'm sure, lead to a few people becoming blind, wheelchair-bound, one-armed kickass new Gods, and undermine one of the pieces that I think make this system distinct: You have two abilities unless you've done some amazing shit to earn more. Powers = effort and all that.

My two cents.

Disabilities? - Ashe - 01-05-2009

Um, people've already chosen their two abilities and such.

Are you seriously wanting everyone to go back and recreate their characters or cut off a limb?

Disabilities? - Sage - 01-05-2009

AD actually refers to Another Destiny, just to clarify.

I stand by Reijin on this one, with FUCK NO.

I am not remaking Vad OR Trixie =(

Good thing we're not taking your opinion into account

Disabilities? - Pinky - 01-06-2009

i was thinking that it would just make concrete the problems that characters already have. did everyone seriously make their characters with zero flaws or something? lame :[

They are just assumed instead of being as in stone as this thing would call for. I have 1% Focus, needless to say, I'm not going to be able to manipulate ki in any sort of beneficial way. Even though I have 1% Focus, and obviously a candidate for Ki Ineptitude, maybe I want to by Ki Control and get my Dan on. Why close the gate on that, and similar situations? <insert more examples here>

Would this take up an ability slot? That's dumb, if so, not to mention a one time 5-10XP is nothing special and really doesn't make sense to me.

I don't see the point in needing to put a stamp on this stuff. If you get Ki Mastery and Ki Sense, throw an overwhelming majority of your stats into Focus and neglect the physical stat's, then it's obvious you will suck in hand to hand combat. No reason to pick something to reaffirm this (other than free XP).

It's true.

Disabilities? - Ashe - 01-06-2009

This would accomplish the same thing "Choosing an alignment" would, in that it makes your character too rigid, which while realistic, does cross the boundaries of fun. Otherwise we'd force people to pay child support for all these illegitamate offspring to their previous characters.

I actually have to say. I made Vad not willing at all to use KI. He's hand to hand combat only. That's his flaw.

Disabilities? - Pinky - 01-07-2009

Well, there's a difference here.

You could have low Focus and it only means that your external ki attacks are weak. You could get Ki Spec Ability or Ki Control and be really skilled in ki manipulation, but low Focus would still mean your ki attacks are weak. If that's what the system is supposed to be like, fine, but these arguments are weak like you've got 1% in the Debate Stat or something. 8DX
