Combat Teleportation and After Image

Can one be matched and one can't?

Like the description for After Image says it can be matched with another After Image user. Can Combat Teleporation not be matched until someone else has it?

My assumption is that the only person able to accurately tell where someone with Combat Teleportation will appear is someone with Foresight. If I stretch it, possibly Ki Sense. However, I'd mostly say Foresight because otherwise, it really seems like Ki Sense can be blurred into covering practically anything Foresight would do in a fight.

I still don't know why they're different =( Yeah the sensing issue, but still. If someone has enough speed, AfterImage could accomplish the same goal. Right?

My main question is why one made the ability list and one made the Technique list.

Afterimage is just a burst of speed. You arn't actually disappearing. So somebody else with afterimage could still track you.

CT is where you actually disappear all together. It can't be tracked, or predicted. It's not like you just suddenly get faster and people can still keep their eyes on you. You actually completely disappear and you cannot be tracked.

Thanks and Noted.

Afterimage isn't that good of a technique. While it works a couple times, after the second time you use it on somebody, they're gonna know you're trick and will be more aware of how to stop you. It's not flawless.

With CT, there is no defense against it. You just gotta hope you catch the dude before they catch you.

Wow, that helps alot. No After Image for me then. Other plans will need to be sufficient.

Afterimage is effectively moving from point A to point B at a speed faster than light. You see them at point A, and you see them arrive at point B. You don't see them between that, but they physically moved it, faster than you could see. If you have the tech yourself, then you are able to keep up with that fast of movement to follow them.

Teleporting is the same thing, except there is nothing between point A and B. You are on point A, and with zero movement, are just AT point B. There's no physical travel between them.

Imagine a wall. Afterimage will let you pop around appearing all you want in front of that wall. Teleportation will actually allow you to appear on the other side of this wall. Afterimage can't because you would physically hit the wall in your travel, while teleporting removes the entire travel space.

Another way of looking at it is to hold up a sheet of paper. You can draw a line from A to B, but if you pinch together the paper and stab the pencil through it at points A and B, that's the difference there.

Okay, so what's the flaw? Because, from what's listed here and in the RULES forum it looks like anybody with AI/CT can godmode their way out of just about anything. Somebody's rushing at you? You're gone in a flash. Somebody's using a retardedly powerful ki blast? Jump in the air, and when it gets too close you're suddenly twenty feet to the right.

Read the bold print...there is no flaw. There is no god modding. One is more efficient, one isn't. Basic physics.

Um, no. He meant he figured combat teleportation is too powerful.

It's no big. Just like everything else, you're expected to have a modicum of common sense. Now, it sort of depends on how you play CT. Either you're literally just winking out of existence only to reconstitute yourself back into existence somewhere else or you're tearing yourself apart at the molecular level and moving your components at insane speed before reassembling yourself. Either way would exert a great deal of strain on you.

If you start CT-ing your ass off all over the playing field all the time, you'll tire yourself out.

Well, I'm not saying using it all the time, but it seems like an all-too-convenient counter to immanent defeat. This is particularly true for the big ki attacks: if it doesn't hit then the caster is shit out of luck because they just blew a wad -- but isn't that the exact kind of situation where characters would want to use it? At least there should be a limit to Afterimage because it's the lesser of the two and I plan on getting it sometime soon and I'd like to know before my abuse of it is rejected by as-yet unspecified rules.

There has to be some kind of limit to zipping around. Toriyama only used it in minor instances but never as a counter for major attacks, excluding one time: where Goku dodged Piccolo's final ki blast in the 24th tournament. I'm starting to think that there was no real reason for the limitation other than that it would be anticlimactic.

We could say that you would exert just as much energy as the person put into their ki attack.

Difference between: - Sage - 01-21-2009

After-image is significantly less effective. You might be able to zip out of a mammoth ki blast, you might not. It can be tracked, and some ki waves can be redirected. But, more importantly, it's part of the whole 'just don't godmode' ruling. It's not like escaping one ki blast unscathed is going to completely turn the fight around anyway. But if you blink out of the way of like 20 ki waves in a row and as a result the other guy can't move 'cause he's so tired, we'll just tell you you were godmoding and now you lost. =)

Difference between: - Ashe - 01-21-2009

To make note, this RPG is not one of the ones that forces one person to trail off at the end of their roleplay "He fired the large beam directly toward his opponent..." who then gets on AIM and goes "I hope he decides not to dodge it, there's nothing beyond his decision to dodge or not to stop me from winning this tournament" to which the opponent posts "Huzzah, John teleports to the side and dodges!"

This situation shouldn't even come up.

And Afterimage is expected to be used in the same way as the Replacement Technique in Naruto. What's to stop them from just throwing logs repeatedly until the end of time to avoid each other? Common sense. We are just here to write and enjoy it, we aren't here to find ways to cheat and god mode.

Difference between: - Super Buu - 01-21-2009

What Ashe said is true. This is something that's come up on AD as well, the idea that you can 'beat' someone with an attack if they can't dodge it or whatever. That doesn't happen. People generally write a post themselves with an attack being launched and it either hitting or missing. Their opponent can't exactly come in mid-post and say "I DODGE IT WITH AN AFTERIMAGE!!! HAHAHA"

The bottom line is, no matter how good a move is, in reality, it's just an IC advantage. And only OOC factors determine whether someone wins a fight. If staff determines that you should lose a fight (because your opponent had more stats/abilities, because you wrote worse, or a combination of the two) then no combination of moves can stop your death/injury. If you end the fight with a godmodey post that seemingly leaves your opponent with no way out, then staff will still find a way to kill you. They have the power of deus ex machina.

Characters in Naruto use replacement to dodge lethal attacks all the time, and it's limit is that characters have to set up items to exchange themselves with beforehand.

Difference between: - Sage - 01-21-2009

That's totally not the point.

If Afterimage is expected to be used like the Replacement Technique, and the Replacement technique is used to repeatedly dodge lethal attacks, then Afterimage can also be used to repeatedly dodge lethal attacks.

I think that was his point, since everyone has stated that Afterimage can only be used in moderation and is not designed to dodge lethal attacks on a consistent basis, but then here is this example that, more or less, can be deciphered to state the opposite.

I think that may have been his point, which is valid because it only backs up his original complaint.

The real point is: don't god mode and it's not a problem.
