I assume I'm not the only amateur musician here, so yeah. Guitar talk go. Post your guitars, favorite songs to play, what you started on, your newest songs, etc.

My guitars.

Just today I received an acoustic from a friend. He was complaining that it sounded odd and gave it to me for safe keeping (and playing) while he uses another friend's acoustic. It's rather small, like, not the size I know an acoustic should be, but now that I put steel strings on it, and restringed it PROPERLY (unlike how he did it), it sounds fine.

Bought an electric guitar from a local store, came at a set with a real basic amp, solid state, tiny enough to keep on your belt. It was a real bargain, the set being half as expensive as the next electric guitar, and just as expensive as an acoustic.

The amp has almost NO distortion, so it's only got a real clean sound going for it, but I'm saving up. And yes, it's basically a Fender Stratocaster in design, but probably really low quality made by Behringer. The set seems to have been discountinued ages ago.

I've been playing for around a year and can play only really simple songs. Like..

Plain White Ts - Hey There Delilah
Ben Harper - Forever
Metallica - One
Metallica - Fade to Black
Three Doors Down - Kryptonite
Iron and Wine - Naked as we came

Random songs I can't remember right now.

I've been studying scales for a month now. Mainly minor and blues pentatonics, for now only Em and Am, but I'll learn the others soon enough.

K.

You guys?

Geetuhr talk - Cain - 08-27-2009

Em and Am are the only ones I know too.

Kickass on the Harper and Iron & Wine. Pursue those.

I'm not a guitar person.

I'm not gonna go out stoned on a show like I saw the guy from Iron & Wine do.

I'm looking for more songs to learn, but I dislike having to tune down or into drop D, and anything I find is generally too complicated. So suggestions would be welcome.

What do you mean you hate tuneing down to drop d? If your in standard tuneing then you only have to tune the sixth string (E) down a half step. Drop D opens alot of songs up to you. Heres a few that are rather easy some dont have to be in drop d while some do. And I think there are two in there that sound better in drop c but drop d with suffice. Enjoy. These songs took me relativly 15 minutes to get the rhythem down right. Enjoy. And chase if you will pm or post here a list of music styles you enjoy ill send you a list or two of easy songs to start with.

Already learnt pieces of it. Just need to string it all together.

Addonexus, I dislike tuning it at all, because I'm a bad ear-tuner, and have no electronic tuner of pitch pipe. I CAN tune it via my computer, but it's always cumbersome to find my microphone, or plug in the amp. If I intend to learn several songs in drop D, sure, I'll do it, and stay in drop D for a few days. Also the acoustic is a bitch to tune because the tuning heads are basically rusted to hell and I can barely turn them.

Also, the problem with songs like Home is that the rhythm sections don't sound right unless I have a good amp or pedal to add distortion. Else it's like playing on an acoustic. I'll learn them, of course, just that I'll probably be unable to play them properly for ages.

I'll check out those songs, thanks.

And as for music styles, almost anything, really. I know some classical pieces like Spanish Romance and Moonlight Sonata (partially), tried to learn a country song, etc.

Geetuhr talk - Psyren - 08-27-2009

I each guitar to kids in my area lol I didnt know the heads were rusted on your acoustic. Some of the songs dont sound good in acoustic but a few of them sound amazing.

Geetuhr talk - Chase - 08-27-2009

On that note, does anyone have suggestions as to pedal/amp emulation on the computer? Currently I'm plugging my electric into my small amp, which has a headphones output. I use that to input to the computer in order to record in Audacity, or some such, however I haven't found any emulation for proper amps. Jesusonic works in Windows, however it comes out as a fuzzy noise, if it does at all. Other programs have just failed to start.

When you say you study Em and Am, what do you mean? I learned to use the pentatonic and the blues scale by just learning licks and improvising. Earlier this year I was learning how to improvise with the C Major scale by sticking to the notes of the corresponding scale. But this was during winter, and I had to walk 6 blocks to and from the bus each way, which came like every hour. So fukk that.

I learned a lot of AC/DC and Led Zeppelin songs, mainly by tabs, but don't underestimate tabs. If they are wrong and you have to figure stuff out (sometime they are VERY wrong) they still point you in the right direction and develop your ear. I would mainly transcribe video game music (very melodic) or old school hard rock (epik riffz). Or songs that I absolutely couldn't find tabs on.

Geetuhr talk - Chase - 08-28-2009

Yeah, I generally use tabs, since my recognition of notes SUCKS. I can recognise a G, and when chords are minor. Nothing else.

By studying scales I mean I'm learning where the notes on the scale are and imprinting the intervals into my fingers. Meaning right now, I can not pay attention at the guitar while practicing scales, and still manage 90% of the scale without fuckups.

I know like...one blues lick. And I don't even do it properly, really. If I knew where to start learning licks from, it would help. Also, improvisation and me...we don't get along. I have the creative ability of a rock.

Most of the other licks and stuff I learn came from transcribing old (simple) blues-rock like The Yardbirds and The Animals. That's actually supposed to be way to do it.
