Arimaa. This is a game based largely on chess (8x8 board, with a #1 piece, a #2 piece, a pair of #3, #4, and #5 pieces, and eight low-ranking pieces) but uses strategic positional rules instead of tactical combat. The pieces don't engage directly or "defeat" one another. Instead, they use "strength" which is dependent on their ranking to push/pull other enemy pieces around the board. Pieces of lesser or equal strength cannot push/pull each other, meaning that the #1 piece on both sides are essentially invincible and the low-ranks are exclusively for movement.

The starting positions of the pieces are not set; the first player puts their sixteen pieces in any arrangement in their nearest two rows on the board, and then the second player does the same. This enables players to develop the game without overtly changing the rules. All pieces move the same way (one square, in the four cardinal directions) except the low-rank pieces which are restricted from moving backwards (they can still be push/pulled in any direction, though). Each player gets 4 moves per turn, and push/pulling takes up two moves (first to move your piece, second to move the enemy piece). The point of the game is to get a low-rank piece to the other side of the board.

There are more rules (ie; the four capture zones & paralysis). Basic tutorial, and 2009's pro tournament finals.
