A black screen flickers ominously; thin bars of static flash vibrantly against the colorless backdrop. Slowly the darkness rises and the screen is filled with the image of a news station. A young woman is sitting behind a large, wooden desk, preparing to speak into the cameras and deliver information to the world.

Woman’s voice: “After experiencing months of free fall, Earth’s stock market may be in for some relief. Today, in a closed-door meeting that included the Mayors of South, Central and West city, as well as the Presidents of each city’s largest corporation, an agreement has been reached in regards to how to tackle this devastating problem.”

Images of the six men exiting an ornate and luxurious room fill the screen. The three mayors, flanked by their political advisors, look overjoyed. The other three walk behind them, their visages plastered with doubt.

“In what is being called the largest scaled profit-sharing initiative in history, the three corporations, which all have numerous departments ranging from private security forces to agricultural development, are being called on to work together in a united effort to stabilize the rapidly increasing rates of unemployment, homelessness and all-around poverty that plague our planet.”

The woman’s voice fades, and the screen returns to darkness.

Narrator’s voice: “What would happen if we underestimated those whom we placed our trust in? What would happen if we underestimated their love of power, if we underestimated their greed?”

An image of a normal city block fills the screen. Children are riding their bicycles home from school on the sidewalk; a mother is pushing her newborn child in a stroller behind them.

Narrator’s voice: “What if we couldn’t afford to be wrong?”

An explosion tears through the sidewalk, engulfing the children, the mother and the newborn.

Images of armed soldiers moving down urban streets flash into focus; the air is filled with smoke and dust, the streets are covered in rubble. Innocents flee for their lives.

The images quickly fade into darkness again, interrupted by the face of a man peering out from the shadows. He is bald, and decorated in a fine suit. He was one of the six men at the conference. A wicked grin spreads across his face. Ominous music plays lowly in the background.

Images of armed soldiers filing through the street again fill the screen, this time their uniforms are shown. One group, adorned in Central City Security outfits, opens fire on their counterparts, who are clothed in the colors of their South City brethren.

Narrator’s voice: “What if we stood on the brink of a planetary civil war? And what if there was no one who could stop it?”

A South City soldier flashes into focus, a shaky camera centers on him; he is standing over a fallen youth, no more than sixteen or seventeen, who is wearing an armband that reads ‘C.C. Militia.’ The soldier's arm shakes as he raises his M-16, and then he closes his eyes and pulls the trigger. The screen fades to black.

It is quickly replaced by fast-paced rock music and large scale explosions, covering blocks of urban areas, engulfing residencies and schools. The camera flickers, and then zooms in on one explosion.

On the edge of the flame, a series of shadows begin to emerge. Their faces cannot be identified, their clothing is unfamiliar. Their names are unknown.

Narrator’s voice: “Every generation needs heroes. When the time comes, where will you stand?”

The screen fades to darkness, and the fast-paced rock music fades.
