A Medical Breakthrough - Jonathan Meer - 12-15-2010

It appears that medical practice has cured the first human of HIV.

Cured.

http://manhattan.ny1.com/content/ny1_living/health/130642/blood-transplant-appears-to-cure-aids

It was a blood transplant between a dude with HIV and the donor, who had a natural resistance to HIV, or something, in Berlin.

A Medical Breakthrough - Kaden - 12-16-2010

That's absolutely amazing.

A Medical Breakthrough - Vad - 12-16-2010

Fuck yes. First step toward killing viruses in the body. *fist pump*

A Medical Breakthrough - Psyren - 12-16-2010

Thats awesome!

A Medical Breakthrough - Waffuru - 12-16-2010

I love stem cells.

A Medical Breakthrough - Tyr - 12-16-2010

What ever will the internet users do if AIDS effectively gets removed? "Get aids and possibly die!"? :O

A Medical Breakthrough - Kami - 12-17-2010

Nom nom nom nom nom

We need more stem cells. They fix things.

A Medical Breakthrough - Ashe - 12-18-2010

Reopen the pool.

A Medical Breakthrough - Sigfried Hunin - 12-19-2010

BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH than then there was gallons of telomerase in my blood and I drank THREE WHOLE VATS of stem cells and I was BORNE THE FUCK AGAIN.

A Medical Breakthrough - Jonathan Meer - 12-19-2010

Who the hell IS this guy?

A Medical Breakthrough - Belle Hibiki - 12-19-2010

First, yay for stem cells. Good on you, Germany.

Second, boo U.S. This should've been us, earlier, were it not for jackasses trying to turn back the clock of progress.

A Medical Breakthrough - Pinky - 12-19-2010

pretty sure there's a super poison cocktail that "cures" aids. it's retardedly expensive, uncomfortably high chance of death, and not guaranteed to work, but it's been around for a while.

This is why I hope the motion to have generic nonscientifically educated citizens (to include myself) deciding what scientific projects deserve funding through internet polling fails. I really do. It makes as much sense as asking me to decide what car parts should and should not be included in an automobile for me to get the price down to the $1,000 I'd want to pay. I might end up removing an engine and wouldn't know it because I don't know shit about cars and what the ripple effects of said parts are.

Uh... the U.S. only banned federal funding of embryonic/fetal stem cell research. It wasn't a wholesale ban on stem cell research. And this case was a transplant from one adult to another. Where are you guys getting lost at?

I'll see your misplaced frusteration of "generic nonscientifically educated citizens" on internet polls and raise you a straight ban against allowing misinformed people to vote at all. :|

A Medical Breakthrough - Vad - 12-20-2010

This is why I maintain that a monarchy would solve so many things...

I vote Ashe for King and his wife Queen.

A Medical Breakthrough - Pinky - 12-20-2010

leading researchers disbelieve he was actually cured, since the strain of HIV he had could bypass the mutation defense from the stem cell donor, and is merely lacking signs of a relapse for reasons yet unknown.

A Medical Breakthrough - Vad - 12-20-2010

Considering HIV is also located in spinal fluid and your bone marrow it's difficult to get rid of. I mean it may have temporarily eliminated the effect on his immune system which is the biggest concern, but considering the fragile nature of your spine and everything related I doubt we're ready to tackle that area. Not until we can repair victims of a severed spinal cord.

A Medical Breakthrough - Milk Bubble - 12-20-2010

I watched an episode of Law and Order where this gay guy had AIDs and was ashamed, so he asked his other gay friend to kill him because he couldn't do it. The same guy had done the same thing to 2 other gay guys dying of AIDs. They let the guy off with no charges because he was also dying of AIDs.

A Medical Breakthrough - Tyr - 12-20-2010

.. they should have stayed out of the pool.
