Rift - Milk Bubble - 02-21-2011 Pre release is on February 24th and I will be creating a guild on a PVP server (I'll say which one when they release the realm list). If anyone from Chubbs wants to come play on a PVP server you can join my guild if you want, but it's mostly going to be people from the video game board on 4chan, so keep that in mind I guess. But yeah, other than that, who else is going to play this? Rift - Orion - 02-22-2011 I had a go, but it's basically a reskin of WoW with a better class system. Not too interested. Every time someone says that, I ask them to give me a list of the similarities of Rift and WoW. Go for it. I said it was better, not necessarily similar. Quote:Every time someone says that, I ask them to give me a list of the similarities of Rift and WoW. The core gameplay, quests, the UI is the same bar different sprites. That's about enough for me to call it like WoW. Rift - Kaden - 02-22-2011 The trend of immediately comparing any fantasy MMO to WoW is absolutely devastating to the genre. Rift - Orion - 02-22-2011 Maybe I just don't like MMO style play anymore. Rift - Kaden - 02-22-2011 If I were talking about just a single person, I would have been more specific about it. That post was actually in direct response to reading the article that Rafael linked, but the statement itself goes beyond a response to a single person (be it Rafael, the person who wrote the article, or anyone in this thread). Instead of looking at a game with interesting ideas and design philosophy at face value, people immediately start picking apart what is and isn't like WoW. It doesn't matter what's actually being done in the game, just how those things relate to WoW. It's fucking moronic. Rift - Ashe - 02-22-2011 Well, of course its going to be very much like WoW. They openly made a point of going as close to the line of copying WoW as possible without actually getting into legal issues. I'm not just talking about standard MMO aspects but straight ports of things, things that would be rough to explain for anyone that hasn't played with the common parts of late game in WoW (stuff like the currencies for pvp going from honor to favor, the badge system copying over in perfect form, the exact same crafting dailies for craft tokens you exchange for crafting recipes system, etc, stuff that really aren't the actual standard core mechanics). That said, that's absolutely fine and they've built on top of that foundation. I would say that yeah, the UI and such seems like a reskinned WoW, although its more a "slightly updated WoW UI" as far as coding given that while placement and such is similar, you have the ability to move your entire UI around and adjust it. It doesn't actually play like WoW, in that it doesn't feel quite as crisp and polished on response, but instead feels very much similar to WAR in terms of how movement, mouse response, spell casting, etc feels. Its obvious they were trying to essentially "port WoW" and then "update it". I don't even know about update it. I think they are more just creating a place for people to play something like WoW but with a different flavor and community for those just tired of the other setting and community. I don't feel that "its a lot like WoW" should be used to immediately write a game off, at all, but I do acknowledge the similarities. I think its entirely possible to have a game be similar and take a community and be totally fine with what is a relatively small number of subscriptions by today's standards but previously would have been a massive deal - remember that in the height of EQ it would brag about having a couple thousand subscribers and no one felt that game was barren by any means. A few thousand now and someone will say "WoW has over two million and growing, GG fail game." This shouldn't be the case. There are other DBZ rpgs out there that use our format exactly (or another RPGs format, just as an example). That doesn't mean they can't both be successful at what they are trying to accomplish and the communities will be different - and in the end, with any online game, the community is what people will remember and consider the most. Bad games with good communities grow and becomes great games (Minecraft is what many would consider a "bad game" given the graphics - yeah, I know that argument is dumb - and lack of "action", but is very successful) while great games with loathsome communities become something people say "Yeah, DotA is awesome, but there are so many douchebags every game that its just not worth playing." Rift - Milk Bubble - 02-22-2011 The game plays nothing like WoW at all to me. It looks nothing like it, the class system is completely different, plus the main idea of the game is an event mechanic that WoW doesn't even have. The only similarities I can find between Rift and WoW are the same things that every single MMO ever has. In fact, I'm prone to believe that people only compare it to WoW because 1. They have never played any other MMO, or 2. They're trolling. Rift - Tyr - 02-22-2011 It looks like a mixture of Aion and WAR. I've already mentioned this on Mumble though so my opinion about it is no surprise. Direct similarities are the announcements (some of them are carbon copies from WAR) in the middle of the screen and the (named by yours truly) "combo cast system" from Aion. Now this is the part where I make assumptions based on observations: There was notas anything wrong with this system, it was a pretty good system and was new, creative and had combos in it. I love combos. But other than that it looks a lot -- I want to say asian gaming influenced? -- just like Aions general graphical style. Graphic wise, that's fine, but considering if it's anything like the amount of influenced like Aion, it will mean grinding and a whole lot of it for just about any goal worth achieving in the game, plus a currency system that is all about the #, most likely in the millions. Am I way off? Simplified because I feel like I cocked up the main message of the post: Elements from WAR, elements from Aion, graphic from Aion, looks like a massive grindfest only Asian culture can develop. I will straight off say I have not experienced it on a personal level beyond sight. Rift - Ashe - 02-22-2011 Milk Bubble Wrote:The game plays nothing like WoW at all to me. Rift - Ashe - 02-24-2011 The server Richard's likely to be rolling on (and myself) is Belmont, Defiant side. Let me know if anyone wants to roll there as well. My character's name is Kaimara, a Cleric. Rift - Ashe - 03-04-2011 http://www.riftwatchers.com/2011/01/07/hype-the-difference-between-rift-and-warhammer/ Rift - Super Buu - 06-30-2011 I finally got around to trying this, just started on Bloodiron (EU) if anyone else is interested. Largely my decision was because this guild is situated there. Rift - Ashe - 07-01-2011 Rose Wrote:I finally got around to trying this, just started on Bloodiron (EU) if anyone else is interested. Largely my decision was because this guild is situated there. The obsession you guys have with following around a guild dedicated to griefing will always perplex me. I had to cancel mine and my wife's accounts tonight. We haven't been able to put the time to playing in a couple of months and I can't justify spending the money, despite enjoying the crap out of it. Its one of those "Great game, bad timing" things. I even updated it the other day intending to play a bit but had something come up as soon as I loaded up that I needed to take care of. Rift - Tyr - 07-01-2011 It's the whole "it's just a game' attitude which Rose have already said countless of times is one he shares. (Me too, before it sounds like I'm just hating on the brit) Rift - Super Buu - 07-01-2011 Ashe Wrote:The obsession you guys have with following around a guild dedicated to griefing will always perplex me. Hardly an obsession, I've been in a few goon guilds over the years (but never for long, since every new MMO seems to peter out after a few months). For the most part, it's just stuff like the above, which I don't consider "griefing" really. More like, making the game more hilarious. Not every goon guild is the same, either. Some are just friendly people who like to have fun, others are even bigger elitist assholes than the people they make fun of. I avoid the latter. There's a lot of division, which happens when you have thousands of members. Rift - Jonathan Meer - 07-20-2011 This game is fun. |
