I'm just throwing this out there. I don't know what, if anything, is going to come of it.

I know a good amount of Java. I'm interested in making some games. I'm wondering who here is interested in collaborating on a game.

And by that, I don't mean 'Oh yeah, I'm interested in reading the conversation and making a comment here or there.' I mean substantially adding to the process.

I have no idea what this will look like, and it'll probably be a disorganized failure, but wth, there's a lot of talented people here. And really, I just want to fiddle and have fun with it.

Game Design - Jarka - 09-01-2011

Yup.

To clarify, I'm actually starting into my masters program, so I'll definitely be looking to apply what I'm learning. I know C++ fairly well, but I was also planning on picking up some Java and Action Script. I've got a decent foundation in digital art, but haven't applied it to game design.

Game Design - Jonathan Meer - 09-01-2011

Java is a lot like C++, minus the lame parts. That said, I know some C++, and wouldn't be against learning more of its syntax.

<- 3D animator/designer, student of game design theory, environment designer.

So yeah I study game design at university so it's my sort of thing. I'm always interested in working on something, and now that I have my new rig I'm going to be messing around with the UDK a bit on my own regardless. But if some folks here would like to work on something, I'm all ears, and I have a few friends here IRL who might be as well (including a sound designer!)

I write Pen and Paper systems. I do this a lot apparently.

Game Design - Kaden - 09-01-2011

I don't have any actual technical skills, but I do know shit about game design.

I have a couple of designs that I've never been able to get anywhere with, actually, because I've just never been able to find people with the skills I lack to get anything out of them.

Game Design - Waffuru - 09-01-2011

I can do a little bit of everything. Unfortunately, not enough to one-man something.

I will assist by ensuring that Jarka assists.

WHICH IS A JOB IN AND OF ITSELF

Technology and me don't see eye to eye. The only things I can think I could do are editing videos (which wouldn't help you at all) or writing dialogue and descriptions (which you probably wouldn't want me to handle anyway).

Game Design - Rafael - 09-01-2011

I have no skills, but just out of curiosity, what kind of game you thinking?

Futanari, in particular.

tbh, I don't particularly care what kind of game(s) we make. I'd prefer something simple to begin with, just to get the organizational kinks out of the way. After that, whatever. Preferably not 'standard-addition-to-established-genre.'

Author recommends starting with Tetris, then to Breakout, then to Pac-Man, then to a scroller. Sounds good to me.

Game Design - Anzekay - 09-02-2011

This is also something worth having a look at. I'm going to be playing around a lot with this now, with my new rig.

Saw that, downloaded it earlier today.

I want to understand that level of game design, but also the fundamental, game-loop level

I am a big fan of the UDK. I have worked with it before and it is probably my favorite engine.

Someone did a really good MMO kit based on the Unreal Engine. Hero Engine? I believe. I am not sure they have a low-cost/no-cost license but that could be fun as well.

Game Design - Sigfried Hunin - 09-02-2011

Dude I would love more than anything to make an MMO

Licensing, if I remember correctly, is extremely expensive. Just be aware that the Unreal Engine is different from other graphics engines in the sense that you literally carve out your world into a block of nothing. It's good for structured and linear game play, but if you're going to make something like MineCraft or a game where you free roam it isn't the right engine.

Game Design - Anzekay - 09-02-2011

UDK is pretty much 100% free if you are using it for non-profit purposes.
