Suprised nobodies mentioned it becuase it's the hottest gossip on the internet. Filesharing sites like Megaupload and other popular ones like Filesonic and Fileserve (my favourites) =( have been shutdown by US officials. (Well Filesonic and Fileserve shut themselves down due to fear of being exposed.)

And I just renewed my fileserve account

But come on, like this is really gonna deter internet piracy. File-sharing is like cockroaches. You squash one, another just crawls out of a hole. This will continue for as long as people decide to stop hating the goverment, which is forever.

WAR File-sharing!

Torrenting is slowly getting more popular than DDLs anyway, so no this wont change much in the long run without anything else major occuring.

MegaUpload was scumbags in disguise. As far as I know, the creator/runner of the entire thing was an infamous business opportunity scammer and would lure people into giving money to his project, claim the project failed and take all the cash.

Then a lot of filesharing sites went berserk. The funniest ones are the ones who blocked US IP adresses as a solution. Just, wow.

Yep. I'd rather torrent, myself, anyways.

Mass file sharing is the inevitable future, but because it's relatively new things are chaotic. As time goes on it'll become less Wild West-ish. (see: cloud computing)

This won't do anything but distract the media into thinking the authorities are trying. They know what they have to do but are making dumb decision, as usual. TPTB will always twist a situation to restrict our rights in an effort to "protect us". Torrenting is more efficient though I am against piracy of any kind. Wink

Better legal distribution methods is always the best way to combat piracy.

ThePiratebay is still up.

EDIT: Also, Jarka is right. Even if they put down all of the sites, there will still be 3rd person programs that allow you to connect directly to IPs and file share that way. If they figure THAT out, there will always be another way as long as the internet is fairly unmonitored, which it will remain for the foreseeable future.

What the companies and government need to do to deter piracy is to create a way to legally fileshare and turn a profit off of it. Even people who charge very very little for services is better than charging the going rate. The faster people realize that people will have access to their products for free, the faster they can think of a way to profit off of it.

You can look at LoL as an example of how freeware is CAPABLE of turning a great profit (not saying that all products should follow their model, but as an example). The only way of creating them of their money is pretty much committing credit-card fraud.
